The fortuitous partnership between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio is truly turning out to be the gift that keeps on giving. Each collaboration has subsequently yielded a better, more accomplished performance out of DiCaprio (the gulf between his unremarkable work in Gangs of New York and career-best in The Departed is pretty large). Now, given the release of the trippy trailer for their upcoming crime-thriller Shutter Island, there is every reason to hope the pair's best is yet to come. In the trailer, a parade of Oscar nominees (Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, and Jackie Earle Haley among them) turn up for what looks to be one fantastically twisted story of paranoia and fear amidst a criminal investigation at a mental institution on a lonely, isolated island. Like any Scorsese film, Shutter Island looks visually stunning, expertly-acted, and epically directed. This could even be a bigger hit than The Departed, Scorsese's biggest box office success thus far. What do you think? Who has read Dennis Lehane's novel and can vouch whether the trailer captures its spirit? Watch it below and start counting down the days until Oct. 2.

just to correct the mention in the article – Ben Kingsley is an Oscar winner (best actor – Gandi ) not just a nominee as implied with his name in the list of other actor/actress nominees.
i don’t know anything about this movie or the book it’s based on, but man, it looks REALLY good.
I hope it’s good. I read the book around the time it came out and thought it was a great story with a really disappointing ending that kind of ruined the whole thing for me. But if anyone can make it work I’m sure Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio can.
looks awesome! i cannot wait!
This movie looks amazing! Leo looks so handsome and his performance is sure to be top notch!
I was rather under whelmed when I read the book but the film looks incredible. Mark Ruffalo is perfect casting as is Ben Kingsley. I was dubious about Leo DiCaprio at first but this has made me a bit more excited about his involvement. I think I’ll actually go see this now even if I do already know how it ends.
It’s spelleds “Gahndi” genius!
I agree Matty G. Read the book and wasn’t that thrilled by it and the ending was a total let down. But yes the trailer does seem to be a accurate and more exciting portrait of the book and characters.
Hey Ronnie – It’s Ghandi. If you are going to correct someone else, make sure you are correct!!
I need new pants. My old ones are ruined.
Not to keep going on an off-topic topic that’s already taken up three comments, but it’s actually Gandhi.
And while the trailer has certainly sparked my interest, I’m worried that it’s giving too much away. Not that I won’t see it, but I really wish they’d kept us a little more in the dark.
this looks freakin awesome. didnt read the book, but now am going to have to!
Freaking awesome! I just hope they don’t get too revealy with the trailers.
i’m sorry but i checked out of marty’s movies since “gangs of new york”. leo sucks ass. he’s looks like a creepy man child now and is not a good actor. i wish scorsese would find a new muse because this guy isn’t our new deniro.
It looks like a good movie. I wish it was set during the present day, or close to it. I ge ttired of watching films set in the 50’s…..
For some reason DiCaprio is a better actor when not working with Scorsese. Revolutionary Road is a good example as is Blood Diamond, where is not overacting as he does in Scorsese films.
Read the book and liked it (and the ending) much more than most. Am extremely interested to see how they pull off some of the trickier plot details, but if they nail it (and it looks like they’re on track), then it’s a win! I’m VERY much looking forward to this even though I’ve actually never been the biggest Scorsese fan.
If I remember the book correctly the ending was twisty. So I would suggest if you haven’t read the book, don’t do it; better to be surprised at the movie, then if you need clarification go back and read the book later.
Really good book, I agree that I hope the trailers don’t end up giving too much away.
Also, um, it’s “Gandhi”.
used to be a time when you could tell the difference between a HOLLYWOOD movie and a Scorsese movie. No more-and it’s a shame.
I’m a big Scorsese fan but this flick looks like just another cheap Hollywood psycho/horror film. Hope he can do better than a lot of the cheap, nonsensical crap we’ve been seeing lately which is all screams and no substance.
I had a great time reading the book until I got to the twist ending that Stevie Wonder could have seen from a mile away. I hate to say it but the ending really ruins the whole story.
Screw all the Oscar nominess – Opal from All My Children is in it! She’s balding! She tells him to shush on the way in!
I smell another nomination!
jhwood, that is NOT Opal (Jill Larson) from All My Children.
I don’t generally go for Scorsese or Leo films, but the trailer does look good.
I have faith that this will be a good movie for the reasons stated in this item: the increase in quality from one Scorcese-DiCaprio collaboration to the next.
However, I don’t really see anything special about this trailer at all. Sure, it’s creepy, but other than some of the stunning exteriors of “Shutter Island”, there’s nothing I haven’t seen in other horror movie/thriller trailers.
It’s basically the same as trailer to something like “1408″, but with a LOT more Oscar pedigree.
In a related story, we finally got the answer to the age old question, “How many Popwatchers does it take to spell ‘Gandhi’ correctly?” (The answer is four.)
I think this may actually be better than the book and you know that usually never happens. Looks like some great acting to me.
I just don’t get it. When did Leo become this great actor. He acts the same in ALL his movies. The exact same. His character from Departed, Body of Lies and his last movie were all the same. And from looking at this preview, it’s the same thing again.
For sure a ‘must see’ come Oct !
