The Wayans Brothers and MTV Films’ comedy Dance Flick (read EW’s review here) opens tonight, and we’ve gotten all nostalgic just thinking about all the toe-tapper movies Flick could possibly parody. Know what might be just as good as the movie? Today’s EW.com photo gallery of 30 Classic Dance Scenes! My personal favorite by far: Center Stage’s Cooper’s Dance. I know, I know, the film is kind of considered a guilty pleasure, but in all seriousness, I think it’s a great movie. And by great, I mean that I can pretty much watch it over and over again and never get sick of it. (Admit it: every time you catch it on ABC Family and such, you get sucked in too!) I love getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of super-competitive dance, but the best part of Stage is the finale performance in which Jody (Amanda Schull…um, wonder where she is these days?) sheds her good-girl image — literally — and busts a move in a fiery red costume to Jamiroquai’s "Canned Heat."
What about you, PopWatchers? Which dance scene puts canned heat in your heels?

Though Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights is not nearly as good as the original Dirty Dancing is amazing. The dance competition is amazing, but the final dance in La Rosa Negra to “Dirty Dancing” by the Black Eyed Peas is one of the hottest dance scenes on film.
As much as i love Cooper’s Dance at the end of Center Stage, which i have on DVD (and i’ve seen the sequel). My favorite dance is Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap dance in the dance studio from Swing Time.
If this movie is anything like the horrible “Date Movie” or the painful “Epic Movie” or the supremely unfunny “Scary Movie 3″ or the ridiculous “Meet the Spartans” or the gut-wrenching “Disaster Movie,” then I’ll pass, thank you. An infected ingrown toenail is much funnier than these flicks.
I’m with you center stage – jody dance to whole final dance, with the slow build up to the canned heat and the spins – perfect. It’s been in constant rotation to be played since the movie came out
LOVE Cooper’s Dance in Center Stage. and although not quite a classic, the trio tango to La Cumparsita in Take the Lead was pretty damn awesome
Strictly Ballroom: the finale and all the dancing between Scott and Fran leading up to it.
I am so happy to find out that I am not the only person who loves “Center Stage.” That is one movie that I will watch everytime it comes on TV!
The tango scene from Moulin Rouge. One of my favorite scenes in all of film.
I’m a total sucker for a good dance movie. I was kind of surprised how many great dance sequences weren’t on the list, actually. Here are some of my personal favorites (aside from the finale ballet in Center Stage, pretty much the greatest improbable dance sequence put on film).
Coyote Ugly – Devil Went Down to Georgia
When Piper Perabo says “I can’t do that dance”, I’m right there with her. That is some damn fancy footwork, and since it’s on top of a bar, the possibility of falling off is WAY too present.
Singin’ In the Rain – Make ‘Em Laugh
No offense to Moses Supposes (which I ADORE), but this is simply a feat of virtuosity. Yes it’s pretty much just one bit of schtick after another, but it’s still funny over fifty years later and those are concrete floors he was falling on. Sheer brilliance.
The Company – My Funny Valentine
It’s so hard to pick just one piece from Robert Altman’s great film, but this one had the added drama of a thunderstorm, and Neve Campbell was quite good.
Centre Stage is the best and FYI Amanda Schull had been dancing with the San Francisco Ballet until a couple of years ago and has a new dance movie coming out soon called Mao’s Last Dancer.
That Red Shoes/Canned Heat Dance at the end of Center Stage is one of the best dance sequences ever put on film. It’s endlessly enjoyable. And Rewatchable. For Realz.
I second Moses Supposes.
I’ll also add any Shirley Temple and Bojangles duet, especially the one on the steps.
I love Center Stage. I watch it anytime it is on. But i also love Dance with Me. I love Cheyenne!!
Uh, hello! As SJP looks deep into her partners eyes and says those three magical words: Let’s Do It!
You guys have to know the movie, if not, you shouldn’t even be reading this blog!
hint: remember when Shannen Dougherty was just a bratty little sister? “..do you really think I’m punk? Wow, that’s outrageous, not as cool as new-wave, but a lot better than pre-teen!”
ummm…why didn’t I know there was a sequel to center stage? That’ll be going right onto my netflix queue. I LOVE that movie! It’s completely hypnotic I have to watch it every time it’s on.
