Adam Lambert after the 'American Idol' finale: 'I'm really happy for Kris'

Idoladamlambert_lAdam Lambert looked the picture of contented calm after coming in second to presumed underdog Kris Allen during last night’s two-hour American Idol finale, although that could’ve just been due to the scant five hours of sleep he’d had the night before. The guy’s been, in a word, busy. (One example: Before he talked to EW one-on-one in the post-show "Winner’s Walk," he was waylaid by judge Paula Abdul, who couldn’t wait another second to give Lambert some pricey looking jewelry, as well as a big hug and several cheek kisses, as her parting gift.) Lambert was so busy, in fact, he was only able to speak with EW briefly before he was moved along to the next step in his long post-Idol PR parade, so be sure to check back at EW.com next week for Lambert’s interview with a fuchsia-haired Michael Slezak on what is sure to be one of the best Idolatrys of the season.

Lambert did have time, however, to gush about getting to rock out with Queen and KISS, sing the praises of his competition, and address in his own way The Question that’s been on many people’s minds all season.

I want to just get this question out of the way first, something that’s been dangling a bit over you for the whole season: Would you like to put to rest all the speculation about your sexuality?
It’s not dangling over my head. [Laughing] It may be dangling over yours, but it’s not over mine. Yeah, I think speculation keeps things really interesting.

So you don’t want to say anything one way or the other?
Like I said, I think speculation keeps things very, very interesting. [Laughs]

All right. What was it like singing with Queen and KISS tonight?

Oh my god, what an honor. Queen is like one of my all time favorite rock bands, and then to be up on stage with KISS with the pyro and the costumes — I mean, it was a dream come true. It was awesome.

You were called a front-runner from the very beginning. Did you feel that pressure?
I didn’t feel it as pressure. I felt it as support. I felt like they were very encouraging early on, and that really helped me feel like I could take the risks that I took, you know? Had it not been for that support, I probably wouldn’t have done as well in the competition.

Your friendship with Kris has been pretty amazing to watch. On paper, you don’t necessarily have a lot in common. What brought you guys together?
Yeah. We were roommates, so we were kind of thrown in together, and he’s just like a really open-minded, good person. He’s got a great view of the world. We share a lot of philosophies on the world, even though we have different backgrounds. You know, I’ve learned a lot about his relationship with his wife. She’s great. We’ve hung out. He’s just a good guy, you know?

So you’re happy he won?
I’m so happy for him. He deserves it. He’s so talented, and he’s a good person.

Adam deserved to win. He is the most talented Idol performer ever. I’m waiting for his singles and cd releases so I can buy them.

  • Markey (thegirl)

    Class. Act. all the way.
While I don’t like the dodging of the orientation question, I can’t harp on that when he comes off as such a down-to-earth, great guy.
Can’t wait to see what he does next (post-tout, farther away from the idol machine).

Adam you are the Idol. I cannot help but wonder if the krisallennation rumours are true and there was avoting scandal. That really needs to be checked into. By the comments above you have shown you are a true star. We look forward to keeping with your progress and you are our IDOL. Lots of love and hugs from the land of Oz.

Congradulations Kris! You’re the new TAYLOR HICKS! Now everyone will flock to Adam’s concerts, buy his CD’s and launch him into the Stratosphere of ICONIC STATUS. I just read today that Carrie Underwood was named the most financially successful idol thus far. Well move over Carrie coz there’s a New Kid on the block and his name is ADAM, who by the way will have FULL creative control on his new album and won’t be limited to the American Idol Cookie Cutter Machine. Way to go Adam! You’re the TRUE WINNER in our hearts and we can’t wait to see what you do in the future! I have no doubt that in a few short years people will be saying… Kris who?

Kris and Adam both deserved to win, and it’s been so nice to see the friendship they’ve developed and the support they offered each other through these last crazy weeks. I hope to see great future successes for both of them.

ADAM, I’d like you to know this FACT: This is a numbers game. The other side voted more times (controversy?) and the HATE votes made a difference. Wish that only votes from the heart counted and no hate votes. If votes from the heart, you’ll win it, hands down. You have the most number of fans in America and more so around the world! And your fans love you with a passion in their heart. If that passion didn’t translate into votes, it’s because of the complacency of some that you’re a sure winner anyway. Some tried voting the whole 6 hours from Hong Kong, not even one vote got through. I’m sorry. You have more fans just loving you from the sidelines who couldn’t place the votes.
I’m so proud of you because you’re a beautiful person, inside and out. You are really a CLASS act. You’re a SUPERSTAR in the making. Your kind comes only once in half a lifetime.
Know, ADAM, you are The WORLD’S IDOL. We are loving you and ready for you to conquer the world.

SHAME ON YOU, AMERICA! Adam Lambert was robbed! Now I know why I’ve always HATED this pathetic show. They are not out to find REAL talent, but in fact cater to texts of teeny bopper hormones and pathetic redials of the (silent) homophobes. Are you listening Elizabeth Hasselback?

  • noj

I’m disappointed that Adam didn’t win, but not surprised. Kris was in the bottom three exactly once, and if AI is true to their word, was never in the bottom two. I doubt if he had the popular vote and had the largest number of voters, but he most definitely had enough dedicated voters willing to vote multiple times for hours. Congrats to Kris.
Adam – it is NOBODY’S business what your sexual orientation is. It’s rude for people to ask, and you have every right to not answer such rude and intrusive questions that have nothing to do with you as an artist. If people who are gay want to shout it out to the world, fine. If you don’t want to say if you’re gay or straight, that’s fine, too. It doesn’t matter and the people who matter don’t care.
You have been a CLASS ACT all the way. You are number one to many in talent and attitude, and I so look forward to rocking out at your concerts forty years from now, because you will be a LEGEND. Rock on.

  • To Dan

    and others like him…
Your bitterness is a disservice to Adam, the person you so admire. He is nothing but gracious about Kris winning AI, and it’s sad that so many of his fans are such poor losers.

  • JS4P

He’s such a nice guy. And a great talent. I wish he had won, he deserved to. I think America got it very wrong here, but oh well. I just wish him the best with his career and I know I’ll be following it and buying lots of his stuff. Not on the tour though. Love him as I do. Can’t stand Gokey at all and seeing Kris as winner. Sorry, but all non-Kris and Gokey related AI stuff, I will totally check out.

  • natalie

Love your answers ADAM But you know You to me are the WORLD IDOL not the
AMERICAN IDOL……..Ryan Seacrest read the wrong name you are two idols in one See you at NO.1 on the charts I probably won’t see kris because he will be stuck at Number 40 on the charts. ADAM your exceptional.
