'Glee': Share your favorite show choir memories. We know you have them.

My cheeks literally hurt last night after watching the final moments of Fox’s Glee. Sad proof that I’m not used to holding that big of a grin, for that long. Watch the performance of "Don’t Stop Believin’" again — I’ve embedded that scene below for your (repeat) viewing pleasure — then share your own favorite glee club or show choir memories. You know you want to.

My high school choir wasn’t all that showy, but I did spend one month the summer of my junior year touring Europe with the Sound of America Honor Chorus. Our set list included a South Pacific medley (only the soloists, of which I was not one, got to change out of our red, white, and blue uniforms) and a rock medley. For the latter, we all had to choose between ’50s and ’60s attire. And there was choreography. I primarily just had to work my upperbody (dramatic arm raise!) but when we got to the ’60s section, I had to walk around kinda stoned in what my friend Eva refers to as "the dance of the North American Hippie." (Note: I brought that tape into the office 10 years ago — she can still recreate it.)

Your turn. If you want to discuss the show itself, head over to Ken Tucker’s Watching TV blog. To find out how you can get the music from last night’s episode, head over to The Music Mix.

Show choir was HUGE in my county. I was in the girls show choir my sophomore year and the mixed show choir my junior and senior years. Best moment: Winning Best Vocals (which is the ultimate prize) at our first competition my junior year! I loved being on stage- I miss it!

As a major showchoir girl in high school (and, um…still kind of one as I’m in a semi-pro a cappella group now) I couldn’t get enough of this show! Watched it twice! I LOVED the little a cappella interludes. To quote my friend’s post-show email regarding the “Rehab” performance, “We won all of our competitions and we were never that good.” Woohoo Glee!

I was (thankfully) never in show choir but I remember when our high school show choir performed. (The rest of us were all shocked to learn our school actually had a show choir.) They dressed up as nuns and did one of the routines from “Sister Act” but they were all singing so quietly that no one could hear them. That was the last we heard of show choir.

My high school choir did a version of Bohemian Rhapsody when I was a freshman, and I thought we were the coolest kids in town. When the guitar bit began, our curtains opened to reveal senior guys playing the guitar and drums, and my director (a balding 50+ year old man) jumped up from his piano, knocking his piano seat and the microphone over. It was exhilirating, with such energy. I still remember it to this day…I have to watch this show!

I always wanted to be, but I went from sixth grade with a pleasant harmonizing alto, to losing all breath control and not being able to hear my own voice (still can’t, my poor cat still has to listen to me though). Sitting and watching show choir though, I was sadden by the fact I could have shown in the dancing better.

Choir was the highlight of school for me! Probably the best moment was when our choir traveled from Houston,TX to Seattle for a contest. (We went on a trip every year) We won every possible thing we entered. At one point someone from Seattle stood up during the award ceremony and screamed “Go back to Texas and let us win something!” Best moment ever!!

Choir was my pentultimate class, so school never went by fast enough!! I was involved in both the theatre and choir at my high school, and the two groups went to Chicago for a field trip every year. That was the best! We saw Wicked, Harispray, and Mamma Mia! all live.

We used to do a Christmas show and performed at senior living centers and malls. I remember when our “Santa” forgot his pillow for his belly and had to use my varsity jacket instead. it was kind of a sad looking belly. Too many good memories though…

Though I’m sure it doesn’t need to be said, GLEE was far superior to the other recent show choir property, SPECTACULAR. That being said, I don’t think people realize the depths to be mined by this show. Show choir is outrageous. And fun. And dividing.
I was in my school’s show choir for three years, went to (friendly) competitions, sang at Disney World and on a cruise ship, and performed at gigs all around the city. And because I couldn’t get enough of it, I was a counselor at Show Choir Camps of America after I graduated.
If I have a favorite memory of show choir, it is not a vivid memory of a performance. Or the privileges we thought we were entitled to. Instead, it’s when I won homecoming king (in a school of 1,600) with nothing but a geek flag to fly: show choir, theatre, and marching band.

Sadly, we never had a show choir but I was in the concert choir, traveling choir, women’s choir, band and drama club. My high school choir teacher was always rather ambitious so we actually performed Carmina Burana, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Verdi’s Requiem in full. One year we did a whole Broadway themed show with costumes and dancing in addition to the singing.

Sorry that ‘Glee’ clip doesn’t come close to this group.

Bravo for glee! Last night’s episode simply unleashed the poofy-haired, over-expressive, costume-loving show choir dork in me (I’ve embraced it- it’s totally fine)! Personal favorite memory- “This is the Season,” a song written my senior year for our choir by our choreographer. Sad but true, I still catch myself listening to certain songs and thinking, “Man, this would be a GREAT show choir piece!” Thank you, glee, for bring me back!
