Daytime Emmy nominations: Where's the love for 'The Young and the Restless'?

Categories: Emmy Awards, Television

Jeannecooper_lThe 2009 Daytime Emmy nominations were announced today, and, surprisingly, daytime’s highest rated soap The Young and the Restless, didn’t get a nod for Best Drama series. Rather, All My Children, Days of Our Lives, and The Bold and The Beautiful made the short list. Y&R did get two lead actor/actress nods: Christian LeBlanc and Jeanne Cooper (pictured), who memorably won her first lead actress award last year.

The CBS soap wasn’t the only show feeling the cold shoulder from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The View didn’t pick up an Outstanding Talk Show nomination, though all five women (Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd, and Barbara Walters) were nominated in the host division. Even colder: The canceled Guiding Light didn’t get the critical boost it could have used to help score a move to another network. General Hospital, which has won the most best drama awards, is also out of the running this year, but its actors were well represented. Not only were veterans (Anthony Geary for lead actor) nominated, but so were newer cast members like Bradford Anderson (Supporting Actor), Kirsten Storm, and Julie Berman (both in the outstanding younger actress division). Berman was "floating on cloud nine" after the announcement, as was her costar Anderson. "[My character, Spinelli,] was supposed to die in a car bomb, I think," says Anderson. "So getting to staybeyond that was wonderful, and now…to have this, I feel very fortunate and lucky tohave a job."

A partial list of the nominations is after the jump. For a full rundown go to the Daytime Emmys site.

So many snubs. The talented actresses of GL were nowhere! Crystal Chappell has been doing amazing work. They have one of the best casts on daytime (hopefully soon to be on cable).
I don’t watch Y&R but 5 million daily viewers can’t be that wrong.

I don’t understand why The Young and the Restless was left out of fhe running for Best Daytime Drama. It just does not make sense. I truly believe that we the viewers should vote on the best Daytime Drama. We are the ones that tune in everyday and we are the ones with the most to offer with our votes on what we feel is the best Daytime Drama. Who determines this? The determining factor should come from the viewers. We are what make the show successful with our following. We, the viewers, should determine which show is to win best Daytime Drama. That goes for our favorites in the actors and actress category as well. I just don’t think it’s fair for a handful of people to determine which series that we the viewers prefer. This has to change and soon if it’s to be totally fair. I know you can find a way to make this possible for the viewers to choose what their favorites are in every category. Only then will it be truly fair. We need to have our say.

What Guiding Light needs to get another network to pick it up is for the new network to actually watch some clips of the 2009 episodes.
The Emmy snub was disappointing but 2008 was a transition period for Guiding Light. They instituted the new production model in 2008.
Currently, Guiding Light is the best show on television. The new model is giving viewers incredibly intimate and intense scenes. The actors and their performances are thriving in this new format. Finally, the writing provides well-developed, nuanced character development.
So, in making its decision, I would hope a new network would look at what Guiding Light is currently producing and not back at a transition time for the show.

It’s hard to wrap your mind around that fact that not ONE of the talented actresses from GL were nominated. Crystal, Kim, Dinah, Jessica, Marcy…It’s my hope that some wise cable exec recognizes the talent these actresses bring to each and every performance on GL and picks up this amazing show!

So, OLTL gets nominated for directing and writing along with many other technical categories but not Best show? What is up with that? And AMC, really? really? I thought the nighttime Emmys were a joke but this takes the cake.

  • Sadie

I absolutely cannot believe that Crystal Chappell was left off the list! She was above and beyond her peers in every one of her scenes last year! What a GIANT flub on the part of the voters. I want a do-over!

Crystal Chappell not nominated? This is beyond ridiculous. Crystal conveys more talent with just a look than most actors do with pages of dialogue. She is phenomenal.I’m surprised the ceremony isn’t airing on CBS..they don’t know talent when they see it either.

All those nominations for All My Children are ridiculous, particularly getting a Drama series nod over One Life to Live. ABC can’t be more transparent about what they’re doing. It’s well known that ABC wants to shed one of their soaps. And the general concensus is if an ABC soap is to go, it should be All My Children. Over the past decade, All My Children has clumsily rewritten history and they’ve abandoned their core characters for soulless newbies. However, ABC would much rather get rid of the far superior One Life to Live. I’ve watched soaps on-and-off over the past 20 years, and OLTL has been by far the most consistant soap on the air. The best single thing OLTL has done, separating it from the other soaps, is that they didn’t radically age their child characters and allowed the same actors to play the kids over several years, so the audience watched the kids grow up.
Unfortunately, both OLTL and AMC are Agnes Nixon’s children, and AMC is Nixon’s favorite child.

Big DoOL fan here and am glad to see the nominations, but Outstanding? For last year? I guess it WAS the last year for DoOL vets AND Stefano was brought back, so maybe it’s sort of a last hurrah for the vets.
Also surprised the Y&R was dissed, but last year was kinda subpar for them. They have been bringing it back around, though. (Please, please, please give Phyllis something else to obsess over and put Nick and Sharon back together!)
How does Bradford Anderson get a supporting actor nom, whilst Kristen Storms and Julie Berman get younger actor noms? That does not compute.

  • Samantha LeAnne

I can’t believe Kristen Alderson didn’t get a nod for playing Starr this year. She did fantastic and had some great material, I am just in shock. Both the daytime and nighttime Emmys are a joke!

Guiding Light is the most improved soap right now! The acting is fantastic, the story telling is deep and it tackles complex emotional issues, the show is telling beautiful love stories like Olivia and Natalia. It’s the best time for the show right now and the show should have gotten so many more nominations – especially in the acting department. I hope the show finds a new home because there are so many new viewers tuning in and staying because the show is so good right now.

  • Lisa S

Shhh. If Crystal Chappell is not nominated from Guiding Light – then she has no chance of winning – and CBS will not look foolish for canceling the best soap on television.

  • Chrissie

While I’m glad to see some of the nominations, most of them don’t make sense to me. Quite honestly, though, what makes even less sense is how Crystal Chappell was not nominated for best supporting actress. Her heart transplant storyline showcased some of her strongest work. Utter shame.

  • Aquila

I really don’t understand how Crystal Chappell’s excellent performances last year weren’t recognised.

  • Kiran

Guiding Light truly deserved an Emmy nomination. It is one of the best shows today. The show has turned itself around in the last year and is at the top of its game. As for actress nomination…where is Crystal Chappell? Did anyone watch her transplant scenes from last year? She is unrivaled in her skills. She BETTER get the Best Leading Actress Emmy next year for her current storyline. I have seen nothing like it!
