Simon Cowell again emerged as a voice of sanity in a crazy, Susan Boyle-obsessed world when he said at NBC’s TCA panel on Friday that he thinks the frenzy may be hurting the Scottish singer more than it’s helping. "It could all go horribly wrong now because there’s so many other distractions," he told the gathered critics. "She has four weeks to prepare for the biggest night of her life, which is, she’s got to sing better than she sang before." Is that even possible, you guys?! Just kidding. Sure, Susan has a lot more going on now than she did during her auditions, but she’s also had a lot more high-profile practice — serenading Larry King seems like pretty good practice (or nightmarejuice, depending on how you roll) for the big night.
Cowell says he’s thinking of holding additional auditions in other cities now that Britain’s Got Talent could attract different contestants. “You don’t have to be a singer who’s 47 who’s never been kissed, with a cat — just somebody who says, ‘You know what? I think I could win a competition and I think I am talented and I don’t think people are going to judge me because of the way I look.’"
Well, I have a new Stuart Smalley–style morning mantra from now on, fo reals.
Anyone agree that the Boyle hype may not play to her advantage? Are we finally growing tired of the subject altogether, some four weeks before she gets to sing for us again?

I agree with Simon. She needs to make sure she’s ready, and not feel the pressure that’s on her. It’s gonna take her nerves of steel, but she has the talent.

I think she’s in trouble due to some inevitable back-lash. She’ll lose votes due to some people 1) being tired of her, 2) thinking she’s already going to get paid with a contract, 3) will see her as the favorite and will find a new underdog to root for.
She may not win BGT, but if she keeps singing well and doesn’t try to change who she is, then she will get a contract even if she loses.
Sings like a bird and yet the writer still have to throw in comments about her looks. How sad.I hope she kicks butt!!You GO Susan!!
I think Simon better offer her some protection.
When I think back about Susan’s audition I ask myself it was just not the shock of expectation meeting reality of talent, mixed in with seeing her dreams come true, that influence so many into the frenzy about her singing. Then I go back and view her audition tape again, telling myself that this time I’m going to be objective, unemotional and critical, and every single time (and there have been dozens now) I find myself with tears rolling down my cheeks and in awe of her talent. Susan may have some people rooting for her because she appeared to be the underdog, but the truth of the matter is Susan has real talent and a gifted voice that will carry her on to victory when the novelty of her character wears off.
Simon is trying to drum up suspense about his TV show, so people won’t think the competition is all over.
Susan, ignore everything, including Simon, who has his own interests at heart. Just sing. Millions of people are waiting to buy your CD.
The audience will continually feed such vicious circles. People love a good underdog story, but they love more tearing down someone who’s gotten too big for their britches, and what they love even more than that is to cheer the comeback of the fallen underdog. Susan Boyle still has plenty of vicious circle life in her.
It’s not about tearing her down. The woman’s backtracked on basically everything in under two weeks. She’s dressing in designer clothes, admitting to lying about large parts of her story, and undergoing a complete makeover. What are people supposed to think? Meanwhile, she hasn’t even won the competition yet. From what I hear a 10-year old girl, who is getting no coverage, just outperformed her. I feel more sorry for the girl and everyone else in the competition, who can’t get any coverage because the media’s gone on a Susan Boyle-bender. She’s been on every show known to man. You go on a bender, you’re gonna get a hangover. This is the hangover.
I gotta admit, i was skeptical at first, but Susan is a very talented singer and her voice is beautiful. Looks be damned, anyone with a soul will love her.
Simon needs to stop worrying about her, she will do GREAT!!!
Susan Boyle is a REAL PERSON with REAL TALENT. I am sick of the cookie cutter plastic Barbie dolls in the music industry. Susan is a cute Scottish lady who deserves respect and admiration.

Susan Boyle is an extremely talented singer. The 10-year-old you’re referring to (but obviously haven’t listened to) is getting plenty of coverage but she is just not that remarkable (granted more adorable). The media frenzy is hardly Susan’s fault and she has not backtracked but rather elaborated more on her history, which is still quite facinating. I look forward to her next performance and so should you. Also, unless your name is actually simon, calling yourself that is pretty pathetic.
She hasn’t done anything any woman her age wouldn’t do. So she styled her hair and bought some new clothes, how many women DON’T do that on their 50th, she’s just a few years ahead. Give her a break.
The question is, Is Britain more talented than the U.S.? I don’t recall anyone from America’s Got Talent coming close to the 3 Internet sensations this show has already produced for Britain this year.
Susan is a beautiful person with a hugh personality and an even greater singing voice. She is very real and is just who she is! Her makeover was nice, but either way, I am looking forward to her CD’s and I for one am hoping she is realizing her dream. She deserves it!!!!
