'American Idol': Will Kris Allen help boost sales of 'Once'?

During last night’s American Idol, we heard our final seven perform plenty of ho-hum tunes from the likes of Bryan Adams, Bette Midler and Steppenwolf for Songs from the Movies night. (Really, Adam? You couldn’t do my personal choice for you, Alanis Morissette’s "Uninvited"? Really?) Thankfully, season 8’s doe-eyed underdog delivered the goods with "Falling Slowly," a beautiful song from indie darling Once that, might I add, is not at all "obscure," thankyouverymuch Kara. It won an Oscar.

And though Randy didn’t have kind words for Kris, audiences seemed to be impressed by the performance: The film and lyrics to the song were popular search terms on Google this morning. Can we expect Kris’ unique song choice to boost sales and rentals of the film? I certainly hope so — it would be nice to see Idol promote a quality film and album for once, rather than just the latest pop song that’s already No. 1 on the charts. (The film’s album is already charting at No. 26 on iTunes’ top album downloads list.)

Will you buy the Once album following Kris’ performance? The film?

I hope this brings massive attention to both the film and the soundtrack. This gem was overlooked by too many people in 2007.

ANYTHING that directs attention to My Official Favorite Movie of 2007 is a good thing in my book. (Okay, maybe not ANYTHING…let’s not take that as inspiration to go, like, serial kill the entire cast or something, okay, psychos?)

I hope people at least download the song so that they can see how much better the song is than the performance Kris gave! In the song you can really feel the heartache that this man and woman are singing to each other. I don’t think it worked without BOTH vocals and Kris’s soft voice didn’t work because there was no desperation in it- it sounded like he was singing it to his puppy!

Love love love the movie and the soundtrack. Kris definitely did the song justice and I truly enjoyed his version.

I think it will definitely help! I’ve already gone on iTunes and downloaded ‘Falling Slowly’. Great song!

  • Once Fan

I already have the soundtrack and the film and I don’t want American Idol making it “trendy”.

This is what make Kara’s comment so rediculous. I have had the soundtrack on my iPod for years, and have it memorized by heart; everyone I know has the album on their iPod, and has it memorized. It’s one of the more familiar soundtracks.
On the other hand, no one I know really “knows” any of those other songs, never mind owns them; sure, they’re familiar, as background music in the supermarket, but I wouldn’t know the lyrics to those Diane Warren-y songs if my life depended on it.
Kris Allen chose REAL music–song that has meaning and emotion that people connect to, not just sound wallpaper.

As much as I hate “Idol” and all of its schmaltz, anything that gives this movie more exposure is worth it. But, for those who haven’t been exposed, see it movie form first before listening to the soundtrack. Seeing Glen and Marketa sitting at the piano and playing that song for the first time is absolute magic.

Kris sucks and is going home.
    Go Anoop!!!
    Make India proud, homies!!!

Actually, I’m hoping to download Kris’ version from iTunes. I thought it was even better than the original.

I don’t like this movie or the song, and I’m going to like it even less if DialIdol is correct and Kris goes home tonight. A pox on Once!

I am happy that this movie got mainstream attention. Sure, it won a well-deserved Oscar but I dn’t think a lot of the Idol crowd watches the Oscars. I do agree with one of the above posters that people need to watch the movie before listening to the music.

I enjoyed Kris’s performance and enjoyed the film and song when they were released in ’07.
After watching the performance I did find myself wanting to see the movie again and considered purchasing it, but it was a fleeting thought.

    “It won an Oscar.”
You know, just because something wins an Oscar does not mean everyone knows about it. I totally agree with Kara’s statement in that the majority of Idol viewers probably had never heard the song, nor had they ever seen the movie.
Sometimes it’s best to just be happy that more attention is brought on to something worth seeing instead of being annoyed that someone made a valid comment.
    Thank you very much.

Kate, I agree, ‘Uninvited’ would be a great choice for Adam. Maybe he’ll still do it in the next few weeks???
