'American Idol': What did you think about Motown Night?

Well, at least no one sang "I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)," an offense punishable by immediate elimination and/or being lowered into a tank of irritable  piranhas. [West coast readers beware: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD!] But unfortunately for Lil Rounds, her selection of the Idol-cursed "(Your Love Is Like a) Heatwave" — a song that nearly caused very premature exits for such standouts as Kimberley Locke and Jennifer Hudson — could lead to a flirtation with the bottom three this week. Then again, Lil looked incredibly hot tonight. And Megan (Joy) (Corkrey), Michael Saver, and Scott MacIntyre all performed abysmally enough that — if justice prevails — that trio will be flirting with the silver stools of safety doom come Thursday evening. On the flip side, Adam Lambert took one more step toward converting me into a fan; Allison Iraheta rocked the motherfrakin’ house; and Kris Allen and Matt Giraud (and to a lesser degree Anoop Desai) maintained their forward momentum in the competition with astute song selections and/or potent vocal performances. In other words, Motown Night didn’t suck nearly as much as I’d feared it might — even if guest mentor Smokey Robinson seemed almost allergic to giving constructive criticism to the top 10 contestants.

What did you all think of tonight’s telecast? Who soared with the Motown sound, and who will and should go home tomorrow. Be sure to go cast your vote at the EW.com Idol Prediction Challenge! And check out our Idolatry interview with the charming and talented Alexis Grace below.

Yes! At this rate we’ll have Slezak on Team Adam by “Songs from the Year You were Born” week!

  • BrandonK

Okay, maybe Adam is just looking really good in comparison to the mediocre crop we have this year, but he was amazing tonight. I think I’ve converted.

  • allie

Adam… that was AMAZING!! Like, total package, bringin’ down the house, in it to win it amazing!!
And Allison? That girl better get signed regardless of when she leaves the competition!

  • AlaJames

Adam is amazing. Every night he gives the most memorable performances. I love that song and his version was incredible.

  • MaraW

Allison was amazing!! Great job! Can we just do a triple elimination of Michael, Scott and Megan… pretty please???

  • Jrtr

Adam is totally making me come around. I think Kris is still my fave thought, I am a sucker for cute faces who can lay the guitar (not that we could hear it tonight though, after Smokey’s comments I was eager to hear him play and they didn’t even have his guitar miked). Anywho, I was pleasantly surprised by Motown night and I really, really, really think Scott needs to pack his bags. I am so bored.

“Allison rocked the motherfrackin’ house” – you ain’t kiddin’ Slezak! She was incredible! However, it’s only been over 30 minutes and I am having NO PROBLEM getting though on the phone lines – VOTE PEOPLE!!!
And I also must say, until now, I have abhorred Adam and all the drama, but tonight – he was INCREDIBLE. I’m on the edge of conversion.
As always, Kris rocked. He can sing to me whenever he wants.

  • Snarkle

ADAM is easily the best vocalist and thus far should win — he’s like Kelly Clarkson, he has the range to sing anything so as long as he gets good songs and production he’d kill in sales. Plus he looked like a baby Kurt Russell tonight and that’s a good thing.
I loved Lil Rounds version! She’s shouty and that’s a shouty song, but I love “Heatwave”.
Smokey Robinson is one of the best voices ever.
All of Scott MacIntyre’s songs sound like they should be playing in a Waiting Room…. to a Dentist… or Hell.
ANd SLEZAK, ever since you mentioned Kris’ skin, I can’t take my eyes off it! It’s flawless, not even a pore. It’s like looking at whipped silk…

Ok – I agree with your bottom three assessment Slezak. But Gokey mediocre is still one of the best performances. Way to go Adam and Allison and some semi-props to Kris, Anoop and Matt. Wow – who to pick this year!!!

  • Elizabeth

The Corkrey was absolutely painful to watch! I mean, I literally had to turn my head!
And did Gokey really not heed the Smokster’s advice?! For shame, Danny. For shame.
Adam, on the other hand, a very smart cookie.

ADAM IS THE MOST AMAZING IDOL CONTESTANT EVER (well Micheal Johns is close)! I didnt even really like Adam at first, and I was a Danny fan, but after Adam sang Black or White he’s been my number 1, and Tracks of My Tears almost put me in tears it was so beautiful

  • Locklky

Adam was better this week, but still not very good IMHO.

  • Thomas

    I. LOVE. ADAM. LAMBERT.
ALWAYS. He is super dreamy and his voice is wonderful. His nuanced and restrained “Tracks of My Tears” tonight was heaven.
And Go Allison!!!! She also was fuh. mazing! And she is super cute.

  • Elizabeth

This just makes me like Adam even more. Switched it up. Slowed it down, commanding back any fans he may have lost from the “Ring of Fire” performance and picking one of my favorite songs. Smart boy, Adam. Smart boy! And a standing “O” from the Smokster!!! Sweet. He is a star! He is it! (But Kara might want to look into some arithmatic lessons, “One of the best performances of the night” equals eight words – not six).

  • Dana

I agree with you 100% Slezak! Adam’s been a little over the top for me lately, but this week I thought he was great. My two favorites are still Matt Girard and Kris Allen, and both had great nights, too, IMHO. I think Allison’s performance will make sure she doesn’t accidentally land in the bottom 3 again! That girl can sing!
My call: Meagan, Scott and Anoop in the bottom three with Meagan going home
