Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke was this week’s Guest DJ on Santa Monica public radio station KCRW, and shared five songs that have inspired her. You can listen below (for a transcript, click here.) The five tracks she picked:
1. Radiohead’s "15 Step": When she heard the band open a show with it, she suddenly saw how Twilight would end (she used it over the end credits).
2. Robert Pattinson’s "Let Me Sign:" Also used in the film, over Bella’s near-death scene. "After we made the whole morphing crazy dream sequence we took that on my laptop back into another little studio in the valley, and then Rob literally sang and just played to the image on the screen," she said. "And I just watched Rob sing this song, maybe ten different times. Every time it sounded like something almost completely different, because it just came out of him, this kind of raw feeling and in a way, that was my favorite day that I’ve had in the last two years, just being there in the studio, and watching music just come out of somebody’s body." Is it just me and anyone who’s listened to the Twilight DVD commentary, or is Hardwicke a little too into Robert Pattinson? I know. Kettle, you’re black.
3. Cold War Kids’ "On the Night My Love Broke Through": This song, which Hardwicke said "seared right into my skin and kind of freaked me out when I heard it," is written into the new screenplay she’s working on.
4. Sparklehorse’s "Wish You Were Here": She used the Pink Floyd cover in her 2005 film Lords of Dogtown, which starred the late Heath Ledger. "I thought it was just so powerful and beautiful, and you know, of course, well, ‘Wish You Were Here,’ it’s kind of for Heath."
5. Rod Stewart’s "Maggie May": Her most interesting story. It was used in the documentary her film was based on, Dogtown and Z-Boys (so good), so even though she loved the song, she picked another tune for Ledger to sing along to in the movie’s final scene. "I talked to Heath the day before, and I said ‘You’re cool, with the other song, it’s all good?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, it’s all good.’ And then one minute before shooting, Heath said, ‘Catherine, I gotta sing ‘Maggie May,’ I’m not doing the other song.’" She said the scene, of him shaping a surfboard, is one of her all-time favorites Heath scenes because it feels more like him than a character. "Heath had that ability to just absorb that movement and physicality. He could do everything in his own cool way." Watch the scene below.

wow- any reason to shove more Twilight down our throates eh- but shamelessly using Heath Ledger to do it, is even low for your standards… you’re so pathetic Mandi
Who are these people? What is ‘Twilight’? Why does EW care?
I give up!!! EW, you’ve convinced me… Twilight is the single greatest work of art ever created. Edward + Bella 4ever!
Crispy thats funny.
Yeah Hardwicke adores Rob but then who wouldnt – he’s easy to adore. I’m envious that she was able to sit with him as he created music. A big treat.
Buffy, where are you? Pls. to bring stakes.
I am crazy about Rob’s music. I think its spectacular.
Mandi, you’re hot! Don’t listen to these chump-posters. They could’ve skipped this post, but skipping on anything R-Patz related is like skipping meals for 5 days straight. Love your posts.
Catherine did a wonderful thing -she brought our attention to Pattinson’s fantastic music. We owe her.
Oh great, another stupid abbreviated name for a not so great “celebrity”. R-Patz! When will people realize that when they say these names, they sound like a 12 year old girl on the middle school playground?
thanks Mandi – great post. I love Rob, but Nix’s comment brought the Lolz.
Catherine couldnt direct her way out of a paper bag but she brought us Rob’s wonderful music so I forgive her.
Rob does an excellent job covering the songs Let Me Sign and Never Think, he really has a way of making something his own and a true soul singer voice. But let’s not forget the two amazing men who actually wrote
Let Me Sign, Bobby Long and Marcus Foster OR Sam Bradley who co-wrote Never Think with Rob

Yes, Marcus, Bobby & Sam are awesome in their own right. We are very grateful to Rob for sharing his friends’ talents with us, as well as his own. Extra props to Catherine for using such fine misic!
*music* Sorry, should have done one more proofread!
I agree. Thanks to Catherine and Rob for introducing us to three great new musicians. I wonder if some of their songs will be included on the New Moon soundtrack. I’ll buy it if they are!
