MTV's 'House of Style' revival: Haute or haute mess?

Model Bar Rafaeli arrives at the Grand Opening of

MTV’s House of Style returned to the network this weekend with a new look (and a new host), and boy, was I let down. Bar Rafaeli, whom you all know as Leo Dicaprio’s girlfriend and Sports Illustrated’sSwimsuit cover girl, hosted along with fellow model Chanel Iman, and while they are certainly pretty to look at, they were also utterly boring to watch (neither had the verve of the original run’s host, Cindy Crawford). Plus a majority of the segments — including, how to make friendship bracelets, a lesson about shopping your own closet with model Jessica Stam, and a list of the season’s "hottest" trends — felt rushed and incomplete. One of those sequences alone could have provided enough fodder for one 30-minute episode, so why cram so much information in all at once?

There was one segment, however, that does deserve to be given a high five: backstage with Justin Timberlake for his William Rast clothing line’s debut at fashion week (click play below to view the whole clip). You could just tell how giddy he was for the show by the nervous smile on his face and his I-can’t-believe-I’m-here wide eyes. "My mom just said to me this morning," Timberlake told Rafaeli (pictured) in an interview, "that I never thought, when you were one year old and we were taking you to the dollar store and buying matching tank tops for you, I never thought you’d be at Fashion Week in New York at the tents." See, it’s that kind of inside look that really makes you feel like you’re (almost!) one with the fashion world.

PopWatchers, did any of you happen to catch the premiere of House of Style over the weekend? What were your favorite and least favorite parts? Do you think MTV was right for bringing it back? Or, are you still scratching your head wondering what the heck House of Style was in the first place?

This was a great show in the eighties when supermodels were new, but now there’s no way this thing will ever fly. Bar is a nice girl, but if they really wanted to get the show going get a real supermodel like Kate Moss or Pamela Anderson or Katrina Darrell to host. Naomi Campbel would be great. Gisele Budchin could do it with her horrible accent and clowish strut. Tom Brady could follow her around on that solid gold leash and Pat fans could throw rotten fruit or something.

Katrina Darrell would be great, she’s an aspiration to young girls like myself who know exactly what they want.

It was a mess! I loved the early HOS days with Cindy Crawford and Nikki Taylor. This felt like a joke. Friendship bracelets? A host you can barely understand? Sound bites that were rushed and uninteresting? All three equal a recipe for disaster. Hopefully MTV recognizes this and will revamp the format to make this show great again.

If I were to pick any top model to host something on MTV, I’d go with Brit club queen Agyness Deyn. That girl has personality. http://fashionmefabulous.blogspot.com

I’m so glad in Canada we have Iman as the host of Project Runway Canada! Iman can be bitchy at times, but is often so sweet, she’s very knowledgeable about fashion, love her!!

If you watch clips from the original, you’ll see that Cindy Crawford didn’t exactly have it all together either, but she had something that Bar just doesn’t have…charisma. And being at the height of supermodel-ism, the show was exactly what people were wanting at the time. Nobody knows are cares about models anymore. The show would have to be another version of E! News in order to be successful. I loved the original. This one already bores me.

I agree, the hosts could be much better. They should pick hosts based on speaking skills, not just on looks or “it” factor…. Also agree that it was too much compacted information and cut too quickly. The best parts were the “real” people who sent in segments about their personal style…the fashion countdown trend was worthy…and I liked the behind the scenes of runway footage, and seeing the fantasy dinner party…just feel like they could have done a better job in general…maybe not dumb it down so much?…
