'Watchmen' and other movies that shouldn't have shown breasts just because they could

Watchmentrailer_lThose of you who’ve seen Watchmen, answer me this: Were you distracted by Silk Spectre’s bare bosoms during her love scene with Nite Owl? Days later, I’m still annoyed by them. I don’t like when films show breasts just because (a) they’ve got the R-rating, so they can and (b) straight men are the presumed audience. Now, I realize this raises more questions for you:

1. Am I just saying this because I didn’t love the movie? No. I also found the bare breasts distracting during the opening sex montage in Wedding Crashers, a movie I did enjoy.

2. Am I just saying this because I’ve never read the comic? No. I’ve talked to someone who has, and she agreed that director Zach Snyder milked the scene to the point of absurdity. (I wasn’t sure whether I was laughing at it or with it.)

3. Am I just saying this because I’m a straight woman? That’s what I want to find out. It’s possible, I suppose. I know when I mentioned this "breasts for breasts sake" concept to my male editor, his first response was, "What about abs for abs sake?"

4. Why wasn’t I "distracted" by Dr. Manhattan’s full frontal? Because it was his character’s usual state, and it wasn’t Billy Crudup’s actual front.

5. Why didn’t I even mention the skin we saw on Patrick Wilson during that Silk Spectre/Nite Owl love scene? Because that’s how distracted I was by Malin Akerman’s breasts!

So, back to my questions: Were you distracted by Watchmen‘s graphic sex scene? And what other films do you think bared all when they didn’t need to?

Mayber her breasts are just that spectacular that you can’t stop thinking about them.
The films of Larry Clark do not need the degree of almost underage nudity that they have

You’ve got some big problems in your life if that was the only thing you felt you should concern yourself and us with. What a waste of time.

Does anyone remember the movies during the 80′s? There were breasts in pretty much every movie.
Now even in so called ‘rauchy’ movies, you barely see anything and almost all love scenes in movies have no nudity at all.
Not to mention strippers in films don’t even take their clothes off. It’s entirely unrealistic.
Why are we so afraid of breasts now? Not a good trend people…not a good trend.

I agree it can be distracting in movies, especially when breasts are seen at the wrong times. The worst example is in “Shakespeare in Love”. We have a long scene of Joe Fiennes unraveling the cloth covering up Gweneth Paltrow’s breasts but yet they are not shown in that scene. Then, a few scenes later, we are shown a prolonged glimpse of her breasts while the two are in bed together. It makes no sense!
But there are also times breast SHOULD be shown and are not. Prime examples are the lack of nudity of Mira Sorvino and Elizabeth Banks in “Summer of Sam” and “Zack and Miri make a porno” respectively. The first movie depicts an orgy and the second, well, a porno. The lack of nudity in these scenes is distracting and takes away from the movie. Neve Campbell’s lack of nudity in the threesome scene in “Wild Things is another prime example”.

Newsflash: People tend to get naked when having sex. Shocking.

While I agree that the slow-mo sex scene was certainly more laughable than hot, I wouldn’t say it was specifically because of Malin Akerman’s breasts. It was more the over-the-top, cheesy way the entire thing was staged (capped off by Archie’s “explosion”)
As for the image in the screencap accompanying this post, that dream scene is directly lifted from the comic, where both characters are naked, so I don’t have too much of a problem with that.
As for movies with unnecessary breasts, it HAS to be Swordfish. Hugh Jackman walks into a room and Halle Berry is lying there tanning and reading with her top off. It didn’t have anything to do with anything else in the movie. (Mind you, I’m not complaining, they were spectacular.)
Then again, I’m probably the wrong guy to ask because, on more than one occasion I’ve either bought or held off on trading movies just because they have breasts in them.

Honestly? It was just a sex scene. Breasts are sometimes shown in sex scenes. I thought it was a fairly effective depiction (except the music, which was way too trite). Why is it a bad thing for breasts to be seen? Why does it offend? Nudity happens, especially during sex. I didn’t find it gratuitous.

Ya, I agree with the other commenters. Stop hating on the eye candy. I’m sure your breast are just fine. Go home and hug your favourite teddy bear. You are a very beautiful and desireable woman.

The whole thing should have been re-edited to get a PG-13. Might have irritated the fanboys, but both the nudity and the extreme violence were gratuitous.
That said, seeing her naked 70 feet high in IMAX almost made up for Malin’s atrocious acting.

Nudity for nudity’s sake usually bothers me. This did not. It was almost shot for shot the scene in the book. Also, as far as sex scences go — it was a good one. And it silenced the annoying 11 year olds whose parents stupidly brought them to see a “comic book movie” for 5 minutes. It was probably their first sexual experience, much like it was the first for so many teenage boys in the 80′s when the comic first came out.

I didn’t notice the breasts…a)they were so small you can’t call them breasts and b) i was distracted by Patrick Wilson.

Now I am probably going to be accused of being a prude..(which I am not).
However I often find gratuitous nudity unneccessary in many movies. Do we neccessarily have to see breasts or other body parts to know a couple have had sex? Sometimes what is left to your imagination can be more alluring….

“Watchmen” was so boring I must have dozed off during this part, cause I don’t even remember the breasts. But if they were halfway decent they’d have been the best thing in the movie.

  • Jeremy

I don’t necessarily agree that the nudity was gratuitous, due to the fact that it was a SEX SCENE. If pg-13 movies could show breasts during a sex scene, they would. If there were random breasts during the final showdown or something, that would’ve been uncalled for.

  • Luke Alaska

Man, I thought the nudity in Showgirls wouldn’t end! I was so distracted. I mean, I haven’t seen the movie but I know someone who has and they agreed.
