'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' trailer: Stormy weather

Sony released the first teaser trailer for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs today, and all I can think is…well, at least it wasn’t Strega Nona.

The classic children’s book has been reframed with an origin story about how the town of Chewandswallow got its edible precipitation. (Sadsack inventor.) It’s also apparently replaced the book’s framing mechanism — grandfather telling kids about the magical town — and its distinctive color palate.

I don’t know, PopWatchers, this trailer’s just not doing the book justice for me. Is it whetting your appetite?

    DNW.

This blows. Too bad too, it’s one of my all-time favorite children’s books…

Wow. That isn’t the book I remember reading when I was a kid. Then again, they changed Shrek around a lot, and people didn’t complain much about that after they saw it. I’m willing to withhold judgment for now. Parts look cute, but I would miss the grandfather framing device.
My kids thought it was funny, though, and they’ve had the book read to them.

I know what you mean. When my teacher read it back in 2nd grade I thought the book was so cool. But the trailer just looks boring.

I haven’t read this in years and even then I was only a fat kid who loved the pictures of food. This adaption just looks like an above average Nickelodeon TV movie.

I really dont like the changes…I mean why even call the movie by the title of the book since they changed the framing character. The colors of the original book would have looked cool!

So how do we actually know the framing device has been changed? I mean…just because it wasn’t in the trailer? I can think of plenty of movies that didn’t give an indication how it would be bookended via the trailer. Have a little faith. This brought back a great deal of memories for me and I am pretty pumped to see it.

Could be fun with my 5yo…but this really is her favorite book and she’ll easily see the lameness…but she’ll like it anyway.

might have been more interesting as live-action; could have been what Sandler’s “Bedtime Stories” wasn’t

Feels like a cookie cutter animated movie, which just so happens to borrow the title and basic premise from the book, without retaining any of its quaint charm and design sense. Yawn.

Uh, Tim, stifle your PR shill ways until the film is actually closer to coming out. I think that’s when you’ll be needed the most.

No no no no nooooooo! I’m intimately familiar with the book, having read it aloud at least 10 times in the last 2 months. They’ve taken a classic tall tale and butchered it into something unrecognizable. For shame.

My kids loved the trailer. It’s one of my first grader’s favorite stories at the moment. I think it’s a poor adaptation. I highly doubt that it would be worth watching for 90-plus minutes.

  • Molly

I laughed out loud at this trailer. My kids are already totally excited to see it!

  • Holly

I think it looks like a fun movie that kids will enjoy. Especially in 3D. The animation is cute and colorful and the cast is great! Plus, it’s written by the Clone High people.
