Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead movies are among my favorite films and the man himself is one of my favorite interviewees. When the Coen brothers released Fargo I interviewed the director about his collaborations with the siblings, which included co-writing The Hudsucker Proxy. At one point in our chat I asked him what he thought about the fact that, while critics routinely lauded the Coens, they tended to regard Raimi as just that guy who makes those schlocky horror movies. His reply? “They’re right. The Coens are artists. And I am just the guy that makes those schlocky horror movies.”
Of course, these days, Raimi is famous for being that guy who makes those hugely successful (if, it seems to me, often unwatchably ponderous) Spider-Man movies. However, his new film, the awesomely-titled Drag Me To Hell, is a return to his horror roots and, judging by the trailer embedded below, looks to be a slice of terrific slice of primo schlock, with loan officer Alison Lohman attempting to get rid of a curse that will ultimately leave her “burning in hell for all eternity!” (Why has she been cursed? Because she denied an elderly woman an extension on her mortgage payment. And how about that for a timely plot point?)
So, Popwatchers, are you as psyched as me for Mr Raimi’s return to terror? Or would you rather he’d just skipped straight to Spidey 4?

I can’t wait! I love Sam Raimi and it’s fantastic to see him back making the kind of movies that made me a fan of his in the first place. I only hope he applies this aesthetic and energy to the next Spider-Man film and doesn’t get too caught up in trying to appease studio execs like he did on the last one (amongst its other problems).
Who the f*@% is Alison Lohman? Raimi needs to call his old buddy Bruce Campbell and make the movie we all want to see, Evil Dead 4. Give me some sugar, baby!
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t necessarily think of Raimi as a “master of schlock” or as “the director of the Spider Man movies.”
Of course, I realize he did those things, but I always think of him first as the director of “A Simple Plan” which, to me, is CLEARLY his best movie.
Brian, Alison Lohman is actually a gifted actress not just an attractive bimbo from TMZ like most of the under 30 women that infect every new horror movie. Sam Raimi rocks, I am very interested. I’m sure Bruce will be somewhere in this film – he has to be.
Sam’s in his wheelhouse here. One only hopes that ED4 will soon be a reality.
I am so there!
Ceraballos – have you seen “The Gift?” Raimi is an unsung genius and I will first in line for “Drag Me to Hell.”
This looks like a lot of fun, Ellen Page was daft to turn this one down IMO.

really looking forward to this…! it looks like it will be fun to watch in a crowded theater…
Kudos to Mr. Raimi for choosing La Lohman — she is an amazing actress, and I heartily agree, finally Sami is back in his wheelhouse, and I’m gonna be there to see the results.
Brian-
Good call on “The Gift”, an underrated thriller and, in my opinion, Keanu Reeves’ best dramatic performance. (As opposed to most of his accidentally entertaining work.)It’s definitely more than just the movie where Katie Holmes shows her boobs (although that aspect of the flick did NOT disappoint.)
Also, I really hope this movie does big things for Alison Lohman, who I thought gave a star-making performance in Ridley Scott’s underrated “Matchstick Men”, but has since kinda faded away.
I’m so glad he’s coming back to Horror- I am SO sick of comic book movies! http://www.milehighhorror.com
