Britney Spears' new 'If U Seek Amy' video: Eh, it's okay

Many radio stations are reluctant to even play the barely-a-double-entendre track, but Mizz Spears has gone ahead and made a video for Circus’s third single, "If U Seek Amy." The clip is set, apparently, at some sort of suburban house party; Vixen Britney (wild extensions, red lips, black bustier) writhes around with sexy extras in the first half, before Wholesome Britney (Marilyn bob, pink sweater set) comes on with a fresh-baked pie and picket-fence family.

And yet, this Amy person — we never meet her. Confounded, I tell you! In fact, though it’s kind of difficult to believe the song’s real meaning will get past even the thickest listener, the video itself is pretty tame…almost disappointingly so. We’ve seen La Brit role-play naughty ‘n’ nice before in clips like "Piece of Me," "Womanizer," and "Oops!…I Did It Again," and this one feels a little thrown together, no?

But PopWatchers, I defer to you: Watch it here and judge for yourself. Are you feeling it? Will you be hitting any of her tour stops, even if Daddy Spears is possibly firing her dancers? Or are you thinking Amy should just keep it in her britches already?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the Britney in the sweater combo supposed to be Amy?

  • JP

I just didn’t get the video. Men in suits. Women scantily clad. I couldn’t tell if it was an escort service or brothel. Then, she changes into Suzy Homemaker and there’s the media. Huh?

  • maxie

It’s horrible. Is she ever going to dance again? She’s barely dancing on tour you’d think she could at least dance in her video’s. This video though is stupid and boring.

  • Rob

Wow her voice sounds AMAZING. ha ha ha

  • John Doe

Will EW.com ever learn how to fact check? The story posted about her father firing dancers has been disproved at nearly every media outlet available.
As for the video, it’s not Britney’s best, it’s pretty darn great.

First of all, the song and video are amazing. And Maxie, she dances constantly during the almost 2 hour concert. If you had actually gone to the show you would have know that. The how was sold out and everyone left happy and satisfied. Britney puts on an amazing show. Definitely worth $150 per ticket.

    lol
i like how they have the news reporter in the beginning and end.
a big f u to fox news. (im pretty sure it was fox)
eh, Leah Greenblatt, she kinda sucks balls.

  • Mike

How can anyone not love the Fox News spoof? That is hysterical!!
Not my favorite Britney video, but I still think it’s great! I think the video is showing that even the most clean-cut person has a freaky side behind closed doors.

  • tate

Oh come on – this vid is actually hilarious yet has the right amount of sexy/sass in it.

  • me some

how can this be put on the radio or Mtv? its not so hidden message is a disgrace. Not that she dons’t have a RIGHT to spew her filth, but realty brit.

  • Mike

    She doesn’t sound human.
    Video makes no sense.
    Song makes no sense.
If U Seek Amy if only funny if you’re 6.
    but,
She looks hot. So great video!

  • Nicole

Considering the song, I was expecting something a lot more different. I was thinking something more like the “Gimme Me More” video. I did appreciate the Fox News spoof.

  • Julie

I like the end of the video the lady is like it just doesn’t make any sense. I laugh cause I was thinking of that of the video. I like the song but thought video should be more over the top. It was tame.

  • Stacey

I am pretty sure Amy is the character. Or the conservative white picket fence housewife. It’s supposed to show that Amy may have a sqeaky image on the outside – with a adorable perfect family (a daughter who is dressed up to look like a young Britney in the Baby One More Time video), but in the inside…there is the rebel, sexy and troublemaker persona. Behind closed doors. So basically it’s telling the critics that everyone has a dark side. There is two sides to everyone. On one hand “Amy” is playing up to the press with her conservative perfect white fence family but inside, very different side. Which is sorta code for Britney’s life.
I like the video. Different than I though it would be. Sexy, she looks fantastic. She also takes on the critics who were blasting the song. For having them have a radio friendly version of the song. It isn’t the most perfect video of Britney’s career but it’s better than Gimme More…

  • thad

Still no class. When will she grow up and make a grown up video? Her Like a virgin phase is over.

  • Brent

Nice to see Courtney Love has resurrected her career. Way to go Court. Nice to see life work out post-Kirk.

  • Brent

    Kurt too.

  • Lindsey

I agree with Stacey. The video is showing that nobody is perfect… no one has a 50s style family with the white picket fence. Instead, real life is dirty and complicated. And if people expect perfection, then screw them.

  • marie

I gotta agree with Maxie. I went to her Miami concert and she’s not doing alot of real dancing. She’s riding around on different props and strutting the stage but “real dancing” not really. I was expecting more from the video. I don’t know who came up with the treatment for it but it does really suck.

  • Winona

The video is okay and I get the point she’s trying to make, but the song is barely listenable.

  • confidential

Forget the stupid other meaning of the song.. Her voice is horrible in this. She sounds like a computer reply to customer service lines.

  • Madnae

FIRST OF ALL THE SONG ROCKS AND THE VIDEO IS SO COOL AND EDGY. THIS IS THE BEST. BRITNEY IS GROWNING UP AND MAKING MORE MATURE VIDEOS.

  • J.

The video is a statement about the duality of our nature–what we show the world and what we keep inside. Not the hardest video to interpret.

  • CineRam

It’s pretty obvious that this song is simply a delivery device for a rather childish profanity. You may notice that the verses that refer to “Amy” have nothing to do with the refrain, which asserts that “all the boys and all the girls” want to…you know. This song may have actually been written for a male singer.

  • Classy

EW you have to respect this chick’s rock star-like irreverence. The news spoof was so clever (way to throw it back at those pundits Brit!). And, I don’t think the video is tame at all. She’s gyrating and frolicking around a hotel room with a coed group of folk she appears to have just orgied with (hence the picking up of the discarded pair of undies). Also the choreography clearly enacts the chorus’ true meaning when she puts her hands together in a pleading way for the “All of the boys and all of the girls are begging to” part, then continues with sexual pelvis thrusts for the “If you seek Amy” part. You have to be pretty disensitized to not feel the steam emanating from that clip. I won’t pretend to completely understand the whole video, but it’s flaming hot and her dancing is on point and exciting(she’s the best hair-tosser in history!). This is probably the best, sexiest video out right now.

  • Mika

The thing I think is really stupid about this is, it’s bad enough that they have to filter her voice through the voiceatron 3000 to make it sound sort of like auctual singing but now her voice even sounds digital, like she a damn fembot or something. That said I would still like tp “If you see Kay” her

  • Stacy

GIRL IS FIERCE, AND ALWAYS WILL BE. It’s just a fact.

  • Candae

I get the video. She says love me, hate me, but can’t you see what I see? and then the video is of a suburban house where an orgy just took place and in the end she comes out and plays uber Mom. The video is saying say what you want, but what I see is people living the same kind of sex crazed life behind closed doors while mine is lived in the blaring light of the paparazzi. I think it’s brilliant by itself, but I do agree the trashy Britney is a little outplayed. I would love to see a real transformation when her next album comes around. Overall though I like it and I think the song is addicting.

  • Elena

She’s dancing! Like, shaking her booty, swinging her hair around dancing! That is all I needed.

  • Jay

She’s looking the hottest she’s looked in any of the Circus videos, and those dance moves are sharp. Looks good to me.
