'Burn Notice': How is Michael ever going to live without those smoking sunglasses?

Burnnoticeglasses_dlSPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen Burn Notice’s season finale yet, then do not read on or you may get a rogue operative on your tail for not conforming by our rules!

I was on the edge of my seat (well, couch) watching our spy favorite gang — Michael, Sam, and Fiona — battle Carla and the rest of Michael’s beloved "caretakers" throughout last night’s season finale, which was by far one of the best episodes yet! I loved every last minute of the action-packed, witty adventure , but I was overcome with woe at the very end of the hour because when Michael took that daring leap out of the helicopter and into the Atlantic he (gasp!!!) left behind his token shades.

I feel a bit of a personal connection to his sleek sunglasses not only because they are just as much a part of Michael Westen’s character as yogurt is, but also because I had the fun task of hunting the frames down after many of you readers wrote to our Style Hunter and asked where you could get your own pair.

Now with his accessory left behind with "management," I’m wondering will we ever see them again? Or do you think Michael will be sporting a new look come summertime when the show returns? PopWatchers, are you as torn up about this missing link as I am? Spill below!

Those glasses are uber-cool. I wish someone would make knock-offs. :)

My initial reaction to the final scene: “Noooooooooo. You forgot the Oliver Peoples!!!!!!”

It was really ballsy for the show to let go of Michael’s iconic shades. Just as it was ballsy to show him kill someone and to show Fiona “finally” kill someone. It reminded the viewers that these are dangerous people, and sometimes they kill – and these are the good guys. I secretly hope Michael, resourceful guy that he is, gets another pair of shades just like those – but that would be a reset and the show is too good for that!

    oh no not the shades!!!

  • Joy

Of course he left them behind. It was a bravado gesture of “I’m not going to hide anymore”. Still, it was shocking to see. Michael was scared as heck, but he jumped anyway. It was impulsive, but what else was he going to do? What a cliffhanger!

I think he’ll get them back somehow. I’m sure John Mahoney’s character or the “management” will send or give them to him. I doubt it’s the last time we’ll see management and I’d like to think the sunglasses will be some sort of a good or bad gesture to Michael. At least I hope John Mahoney will be back for a little while next season.

The heck with the sunglasses. How are we going to get along without Victor? Michael Shanks did an excellent job as the rogue agent who was burned by Carla. The final scene between him and Jeffrey Donovan was poignant without becoming maudlin. The chemistry between those two was palpable, and I for one was hoping that Shanks would be back in Season 3. No chance of that now. This isn’t science fiction where characters come back to life. :(

Crap-should have kept mine from the 70’s. I’d give them to Mike :)

  • Alia

    Oh, they’ll be back.

OMG, thanks for the heads up on the show returning in the summer! I thought i would have to wait until September to find out what happens to Michael and the gang. Great show!

i hope that the show doesnt end for at least another 3-4 years but it probably will either this year or next year

  • who dat

well the glasses were busted when he jumped/flew over the railing avoiding the explosion at his loft, but were miraculously fixed moments later… could have just been an error in production OR he could have an endless supply (although that would go against his story of how he got them).

i wonder if the car is going to be back in season 3

  • michaelm

    that car was awesome

I am in mourning for the glasses. Hiding or not, his glasses was his friend.

While I am a little upset about the sunglasses, I’m more excited about all of the rest of the stuff in the episode. (Well, Victor’s death was a little rough, if well played.) I loved that Fiona and Sam chose to honor the promise to Madeline over the promise to Michael (and again showed how they do work well as a team). I also loved the resolution to the “burn notice” part of the storyline and how they set up the next part of the storyline well, with people coming back from his past to haunt him. I can’t wait until June!

That was a great episode. About halfway through I thought they were actually going to Cuba :O. Kinda glad they didn’t though. Anyways, the whole end was very symbolic and I loved it all the way through. Of course losing his sunglasses is a bummer but I hope he gets new, cooler ones. :)

I don’t know why the networks don’t follow cable’s lead in how they schedule shows, 10 episodes here, 12 episodes there, allows the producers to develop tight season-long arcs, and nice breaks between “seasons” just long enough so you don’t forget about them. I’d be curious to find out when cable series shoot, is it one 20-week stretch or do they do a 10-week shoot, then another 10-12 week shoot later in the year.

Really loved Fi in this episode. I thought MIchael was incredible, especially showing that he still has teeth if he needs them, as painful as it was. I have never seen anything the actor who played Victor has been is, but this guy was incredible. I might have to bite the bullet and watch a geek sci-fi show to see more of that man!
also, I agree with one of the comments, they need to make knock-offs of those shades!

  • Chris Johnston

Don’t understand the mourning for the sunglasses.
Were those the last pair on the planet?
Discontinued model, or maybe custom-made for Westen?

  • Bailee

THE SHADES WILL BE SEEN AGAIN..TRUST ME..THERE WAS A REASON THAT THEY WERE LEFT ON THAT SEAT (BEFORE HE KNEW HE WOULD BAIL) THERE IS A REASON THEY WERE PUT THERE AND THEN SHOWN AGAIN…..WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO…IT MIGHT BE GREAT..AS THE SHOW IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE..NOT SO HEAVY JUST ENTERTAINMENT…CHEERS TO BURN NOTICE…CAN’T WAIT FOR SUMMER!

  • Michael

The sunglasses (Oliver Peoples Victory 55) are not made anymore, and are made with a custom lens (Polarized Cognac) for the show. After the explosion, the sunglasses were fine, except the left lens had broken in the fall. Those sunglasses are extremely rare, but do not fear, they WILL return in season 3. Enjoy the show!
