Happy Square Root Day, Mathletes PopWatchers! Today is 3/3/09 — a rare kind of day where the square root of the year is the month/day. Enjoy it now! The next one’s not until April 4, 2016.
I have participated in celebrations for Pi Day (3/14) and Mole Day (at 6:02 am on 10/23). And maybe, just maybe, I’ll crack open a nice cold root beer tonight in honor of today’s square rootiness. But now I’m wondering what other numerical holidays I can celebrate. On the math front, why are we celebrating roots and not powers? I nominate February 6, 2064 to give us plenty of time to get ready. (2^6…). Or what about Fibonacci Day on January 12, 2035? Lost Day on April 8, 2015? Jenny Day on August 6, 2075 at 3:09 am?
In honor of my love of math, here’s a clip from Square One:

Oh my goodness. The fact that you included a MATHNET clip just made my day. I haven’t seen that thing since 4th grade! Yessssss.
Ignoring the obvious April 20th celebration, everyone could “Walk the Planck” on June 6 at 10:34. Maybe a Zales or Ben Bridge could sponsor a Mardi Gras like distribution of extremely small jewels to Planck walkers every second.
Math nerds, unite! I proudly wear the appropriate t-shirts on Pi Day and Mole Day every year, and I happen to also be a 5th grade math teacher, but even I didn’t know today was Square Root Day! I needed this post earlier so I could work it into my lessons! I’ll be sure to mention it tomorrow
Margaret, you are so cool. My kids are young enough to have enjoyed figuring out why it’s Happy Square Root Day. Thanks for helping to raise the next generation of math nerds.
Loved Square One. Loved MathNet. Thank you for setting my grade school heart a flutter with this clip. Happy Square Root Day, y’all!
Square One was AWESOME. I loved MathNet!
Nerd-tastic. Definitely celebrating with a root beer float. And I still remember where I was at 12:34:56 on 07/08/90.
Does anyone else think the kid is Chase Crawford from Gossip Girl?
Mathnet! I loved that show!
Our twin boys were born on 4/16/64 , and we always felt that was kind of special as were the boys.
I LOVED this show growing up – thank you for posting it! Go Kate Monday!
I was upset two years ago on 2/2/7 that Tvland didn’t play a marathon of the Jackee vechile from the 80′s!
Oh how I love me some Mathnet. And that parrot sounds like that weird butterfly-koala from She-Ra.
Wow. That brings back memories! That’s actually the only episode of MATHNET I remember. In the beginning of that episode the parrot keeps saying “1,1,2,3,5. Eureka!” That’s how I learned the Fibonacci Sequence as a kid. I still think about that line to this day. Thanks for putting up such a great clip!
Всем хорошего времени суток! А в Дебесах сейчас хорошо… Природа, речка, рыбалка…!.
