'Damn Yankees': Who should play Lola in the new movie?

Categories: Film

Damnyankeescasting_lJim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal have signed on to star in a new adaptation of Damn Yankees, with Carrey playing the devil, Mr. Applegate, and Gyllenhaal playing Joe Boyd, the devoted Washington Senators fan who sells his soul to become Joe Hardy, the slugger the Senators need to win the World Series. Yet to be cast: the devil’s handmaiden and song-and-dance sexpot Lola. As in "whatever Lola wants, Lola gets." And little man, little Lola is who?

You guys, duh: Cast Scarlett Johansson. She’s far and away my first pick, but I could get on board for Beyonce, too. (Other PWHQ folk have suggested Anne Hathaway, but I just don’t get a "devilish seductress" vibe from her. Maybe I’ve seen The Princess Diaries too much.) Evan Rachel Wood definitely rocks a smoky sexuality, but she strikes me as a little too young for the role.

What say you, fair PopWatchers? Who would you sell your soul to see cast as Lola? And how about Meg, Joe’s put-upon wife?

please no beyonce, anyone but beyonce.

  • Taylor

I could definitely see Beyonce doing this. I think she showed some real acting chops in Cadillac Records and we know she could sing and dance the sh*t out of it. I don’t see Scarlett doing this. She is too pouty….or something. And from what I’ve heard of her singing. Not so great.

If they’re at all faithful to the original play/movie, it must be someone who can dance well. Not that they’ll ever get anyone to match Gwen Verdon. Lola has very few lines of dialogue, so it requires more sex appeal than acting ability.

Catherine Zeta-Jones would be “smokin” or even Nicole Kidman — remember her in “moulin rogue” — too hot for words

  • SuZeQ

Catherine Zeta-Jones may be old to play opposite Jake, but she’s certainly “smoky” enough and can sing

  • Please

No Beyonce. The world is tired of Beyonce being in every musical adaptation. She’s bordering on overexposure and has the potential to ruin an excellent film. I vote for Anne Hathaway!

  • KG

I agree with Keddie – PLEASE no Beyonce!

  • Joe

oooh, how ’bout Christina Hendrick from ‘Mad Men’. The red hair, the seductive stare and curves…

  • paige

definately NOT Anne Hathaway– she cant do smoldering sexuality and I dont think I want to see her try… I think Scarlett Johannsen is a perfect choice, physically but can she sing and dance?

  • Spencer

Heidi Montag was born to play Lola. She’s the sexiest young singer alive today.

  • Joe

Or let’s make Joe Boyd gay, and cast Mario Lopez as the seducer.

  • Sabrina

ANYONE but Beyonce! I would cry. I don’t think Evan Rachel Wood is too young…

  • Sabrina

Yes! Christina Applegate! (Plus, her name is so appropriate…)

  • ShoNuff

Finally, a movie role for Audra McDonald.
But Jim Carrey? Sean Hayes did the role at NY City Center over the summer and was fantastic.

  • Anne

    Amy Adams or Kristin Chenoweth.

  • MrsBug

Christina Applegate – here’s another vote for her!

  • Laura

Definitely Catherine Zeta Jones, hands down. She can play the smoking hot seductress, and also, you know, actually sing and dance REALLY well. That’s what happens when you’re a classically trained musical theater performer – unlike Scarlett Johansson.

  • Happiness

I would say Vanessa Hudgens but she is a little too young. But she’s really talented and musicals is her thang. She also have that Spanish thang going on.

  • Jakeem

    Katy Perry, anyone?

  • Chrissy

My friend Laura and I vote for Jane Krakowski. She has the broadway experience to back up the performance and she’s a great fit for the role look and talent wise.
It’s nice when they recognize people who might be less well known but are great talents!

I understand the need to hire “big” actors to attract the audience but musicals should be starring real singers/dancers. No Beyonce please. She is entertaining and beautiful but enough already!

  • Anna

I don’t know but I hope it’s not Scarlett Johansson. I’m tired of her. As for singing ability, Jim Carrey can sing. He did his own singing in “The Mask.” I haven’t heard Jake Gyllenhaal but he’s supposed to be a pretty good singer too.

  • Eve

Kate Winslet, Rachel McAdams (does she sing?), Zooey Deschannel, Amy Adams, Ginnifer Goodwin

  • paige

why does everyone want to pigeonhold Catherine Zeta Jones to do the same role over and over- she’s done similar to this before – let’s move on and give someone else a break…

  • Victoria

Scarlett Johanson would be great if she could sing. I vote for either Christina Applegate or Jane Krakowski, since she was in the Encores performance last summer. Jim Carry is the PERFECT Mr. Applegate.
I’m way onboard for the movie, but if they let Beyonce butcher “Whatever Lola Wants,” I’m not going.

  • Stephanie T.

After what I heard on the Oscars (minus the high note at the end) clearly Anne Hathaway.

  • Nicole

Ohhh, I second the vote for Zooey Deschannel!!! She’s got a fantastic voice and I think she and Jake G would be great together. I would also be psyched if Christina Hendricks played her – don’t know if “they” would go for it given she’s not a huge name, but I think she’d be great.
Having Beyonce play this role would make the difference between me being excited to see it and seeing it reluctantly. I am over Beyonce – god, isn’t everyone by now?

  • Jason

Please,no more Scarlett Johansson. She can’t act or sing especially, and is losing her seductive appeal as many see it. Even woody allen saw the writing on the wall that this chick is tired. How many more movie flops will take to convince ther producers? Does the spirit and the Island ring a bell? Constant flops don’t help the box office and it turns people off just seeing your name..Cast someone that can handle the part PLEASE!!!

  • Krunge

I know she’s overused, but Angie Jolie could blow the part out of the water.

  • Stephanie T.

How about Jenny Lewis coming back to acting? Her voice is not so bad.
