iTunes celebrity playlists: Whose rocks and whose makes your eyes roll?

Mcconaugheyevansdemitri_lOn Monday, iTunes released three new celebrity playlists, something they’ve been doing since 2003. Thanks to iTunes, now nobody has to live without knowing what Anderson Cooper’s listening to or why the employees of The Office like the music they do. And, as of Monday, we can judge check out the musical tastes of Matthew McConaughey, Chris Evans, and Demetri Martin.

Chris Evans
Playlist: "Over the Hills and Far Away" – Led Zeppelin; "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours" – Stevie Wonder; "Them Bones" – Alice in Chains; "Like Alcohol (A Hole the Size of Part 2)" – Nico Stai; "Juicy" – The Notorious B.I.G.; "Passing Me By" – The Pharcyde; "High and Dry" – Radiohead; "Whipping Post" – The Allman Brothers Band; "I Stay Away" – Alice in Chains; "Lovely Day" – Bill Withers; "September" – Earth, Wind & Fire; "Plush" – Stone Temple Pilots
Evans’ playlist is a mixed bag of genres (like his career) with a little hip-hop, a little soul, and a little Radiohead. It’s pretty cool that he’s got an indie underdog like Nico Stai next to The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy,” which Evans defends as “the best rap song ever.” My one bone to pick: He writes that Stone Temple Pilots is a band he could listen to all day. Well, Chris Evans, do it. I dare you to listen to them all day. And then not cut your ears off.

Demetri Martin
Playlist: "The King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1" – Neutral Milk Hotel; "Rainbow Sign" – Fruit Bats; "Is She Fiona" – The Gerbils; "Title and Registration" – Death Cab for Cutie; "Waste of Paint" – Bright Eyes; "Shape of My Heart" – Noah and the Whale; "Little Fury" – The Breeders; "Made from Tiny Boxes" – Flotation Toy Warning; "Lucky Number Nine" – The Moldy Peaches; "Put a Penny in the Slot" – Fionn Regan; "Lost Cause" – Beck; "We’ve been had" – The Walkmen; "You Broke My Heart" – Lavender Diamond; "A Hit" – Smog; "A.M. 180" – Grandaddy
Martin’s collection is a predictable reflection of the comedian’s indie lifestyle. From genre royalty Neutral Milk Hotel to the commercial hit “Lost Cause” by Beck, Martin’s choices give fans insight into his personal life even if his explanations don’t. He decided to use this space to make very literal, somewhat funny statements (probably to get you excited about his new show) rather than talk about music.

Matthew McConaughey
Playlist: "Above the Bones" –Mishka; "Sun is Shining" – Bob Marley & The Wailers; "Revelry" –Kings of Leon; "Sail Away" – David Gray; "Some Paths" – Mishka;"Nothing Compares 2 U" – Sinéad O’Connor; "Ai Du" – Ali Farka Touré& Ry Cooder; "Broken Arrow" – Robbie Robertson; "Coastline Journey"– Mishka; "Pink Houses" – John Cougar Mellencamp; "Can’t Take My EyesOff of You" – Lauryn Hill; "Groovin’ Slowly" – John Butler Trio;"Beautiful Girl" – INXS; "Out the Door" – Mishka
Looks likeEvans was the only one to actually want to write about his music taste, since McConaughey used his lines to plug not one but TWO of hisupcoming movies! This makes me not care about what’s on his playlist, since they’re probably just songs that he wants to remind listeners ofhis films. And, well, they do. He compiled a list with a majority ofslow jams for the easy listener who just wants to coast through life. You know, like McConaughey’s character in Dazed and Confused, and Failure to Launch, and Fool’s Gold, and…. McConaughey’s playlist is very…McConaughey.

So, PopWatchers, do you think differently of any of these three guysnow? Or do they pretty much fit the image you had of them? And take ourpoll to determine who has the best celebrity playlist!

    Demetri Martin!

It’s weird how much that pic of McConaughey makes him resemble Paul Newman.

  • Mishka-watcher

McConaughey’s fascination with Mishka is noteworthy — Mishka is actuall signed to Matthew’s label, j.k.livin’ records. He liked him so much, he put his money where his mouth is…
I caught Mishka opening for Bedouin Soundclash last fall and the love is mutual, he talked about McConaughey quite a bit.
Also, happy to see John Butler Trio on there — they are fantastic. MM’s list is pretty much what one would expect, isn’t it??

Demetri Martin’s playlist is more my taste than the others.

Saba, please go jump off a cliff with your comments about STP.

  • Max

I thought it was a picture of Paul Newman when I first started to scroll down.

Not gonna lie. I bought Robert Pattinson’s playlist when it came out. But, I did it because I happened to like all the music, I don’t think a celebrity could make me like something.

Demetri likes Neutral Milk Hotel, Gerbils and Grandaddy? He’s so cool!

  • Jesse

Moldy Peaches and Fionn Regan = Win.
Just another reason to love Demetri Martin.

  • EP

I like Chris Evans’ eclectic mix. I’m a hip hop fan. Plus, he’s hot!

  • Rose Tyler

Seriously, how much indie rock and emo can one person listen to?

  • STP

I’m in line with Chris Evans big time. I could listen to STP all day too as they are one of my all-time favorite bands along with Radiohead. I like his Alice in Chains love, too.

  • Noodle

Not gonna lie either-I review the celeb playlists occasionally just to see whats going on in their heads. When Robert Pattinson mentioned the Kings of Leon on his list as the only modern band he loves I gave them a listen and am now completely in love as well.

  • Nee Nee

I like Chris Evans’ nod to the greatness that was 90’s alternative, but I would most likely listen to Demitri’s list.

  • fancypants

i think i’d want to rip my ears off if i had to listen to demetri’s playlist.
