'Twilight' for television: The CW orders pilot for 'Vampire Diaries'

Vampirediaries_lTwilight fans, your beloved bloodsucker saga is about to get some competition. Today, The CW announced that they’re are picking up a pilot based on the popular vampire teen book series, Vampire Diaries. Originally written in 1993 by L.J. Smith, Diaries is an Alloy Entertainment property, the same company responsible for the book versions of Gossip Girl and Privileged. The plot revolves around a love triangle between a small-town girl and two vampire brothers. The series will be executive produced by Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson (also responsible for the horror classic Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer).

Personally, I can’t wait. First of all, I’m a sucker for anything on The CW. Secondly, Williamson is great with teens and horror. And finally, it’s nice for the network to expand its programming slightly. I mean Diaries doesn’t exactly sound groundbreaking, but at least it’s not just another series about rich, pretty young people who are, ya know, rich and pretty. What do you think Pop Watchers…and Twilight fans? Is there room enough in the pop culture universe for ANOTHER vampire romance?

does anyone think CBS is regretting cancelling Moonlight? Vampires are hot again?!

  • Heather

Well, obviously I am a huge Twilight fan. And I have missed Buffy a lot. I think that this is a great IDEA, but please do not make it campy or high schooly like Dawson’s Creek. True Blood on HBO is awesome, but that is because they have created a world and story that seems like it could happen in real life. But the vampire/werewolf thing is really in right now, so this could be a huge pull.

I totally agree. I loved Moonlight and am pissed that they cancelled it. CBS must be hating themselves right now.

I have to admit, I LOVE this series. I read it my freshman year of high school (I’m almost 30 now), and have re-read it several times; I just found it in my mother’s attic and snatched it up to give it another go. I admit, I am a sucker for vampires (True Blood, Buffy, Twilight) and cheesy teen stuff (Gossip Girl). I cannot wait.

Actually, that sounds great! If it’s well done totally on board. I hope it’s more Buffy and Angel than Bella and Edward, though. Personally the latter are way too over the top and corny.

Loved those books! The author also wrote another set of books called the Secret Circle (I think) about witches. Those would make a great TV show as well.

Sounds like a great guilty pleasure to me! I haven’t read the books, but I’m a bit of a sucker (pun totally intended) for vampires. I would definitely check it out.

I love the Vampire Diaries Series, I read all of LJ Smith’s books when I was in high school. And I wouldn’t want anyone other than Kevin Williamson working on bringing it to life in TV land. This will provide the teen TV viewers with an alternative to HBO’s very adult True Blood which I also love. This would fit in nicely with Reaper and I wish CW would really give that show a chance at gaining an audience. BTW, does anyone know when Reaper is coming back, if it is?

I read all of those books when I was a teenager! I had an absolute obsession with them and L.J. Smith’s “The Secret Circle” series. I certainly hope the tv series lives up to the books. Very exciting!

I wish that I had something to cash in on. Can being fat and REALLY boring please become something that people want so that I can attempt to make millions. Oh! wait, I’ll just go have 14 babies……

  • Sarah

I love LJ Smith’s books. I have to say though that The Secret Circle books would be better for a movie. However her Night World Series would be great TV!

  • Abby

I’m really excited about this series too. Parts of Twilight almost seem ripped from Vampire Diaries (just proves there are no “new ideas” maybe?) but the characters definitely have more edge. And I totally concur with the comment on too many shows about pretty rich kids. It’s nice to see something fantasy-esc coming up the pipeline :)

Sounds like Supernatural meets Gossip Girl! PERFECTION for me, hell for my hubby!

Twilight can suck it. The Vampire Diaries has always been the original vampire/love story. I have read and reread this series over and over since I was a tween, and I’m pretty worried about it being turned into a CW television show. A movie? Yes, that would work with the right director and actors…but a CW show? Really? The same people that have killed 90210? No thanks.

“I mean Diaries doesn’t exactly sound groundbreaking.” Stack, please get your facts right. The Vampire Diaries is the first of its kind. Twilight and Stephenie Meyer completely rip off many of its ideas. LJ Smith is the original. Please stop giving Meyer credit.
