David Fincher: The (brief) PopWatch retrospective

Today, New York’s Lincoln Center concludes its "Under the Sign of Fincher" event with two screenings of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button followed by a discussion session led by the man himself. (You can cick here to see if tickets are still available this late in the game.) Although he’s currently being hailed as a sentimental artist for directing the aforementioned Oscar-contending movie, the Lincoln Center dug back through some of his, well, somewhat less sentimental past films this long weekend, screening Se7en, Fight Club, and Zodiac. For those of you who A) didn’t know about this event B) live too far from NYC to have made the trek or C) spent the entire weekend at home nursing a hangover, we put together a little sampling of Fincher’s work, including my personal favorite moment: the (very NSFW) scene below from Fight Club (other NSFW scenes from Se7en and Zodiac after the jump).

WARNING: These clips, like Fincher’s movies, are not for the faint of heart. They are chock full of violence and profanity. Please proceed with caution.

Fight Club (NSFW!):

Anyone make it to the Lincoln Center this weekend and care to share? What are some of your favorite Fincher moments? Did you find anything about Fincher’s Benjamin Button that’s stylistically similar to his work on those earlier films?

Se7en (NSFW and SPOILER)

Zodiac (NSFW)

Fight Club is one of my all time favorite movies.

Jillian Madison’s review of Benjamin Button is hysterical and spot on. The movie was too long, too pandering, and too pointless. Completely agonizing to sit through. If you liked it, you’re either brain damaged, or obsessed with Brad Pitt.

Wow, someone isn’t in the least bit cynical about the human experience. I liked Benjamin Button, even if it was sentimental.

    alexis sunshine,
I have not seen Benjamin Button yet, but I think that it is really ridiculous when people call other people stupid for liking a movie. Everyone has their own interpretations of movies and what they like. Great you did not like it, but that does not mean that everyone else should share your opinion. I loved Twilight, but just because pretty much everyone else in the world did not like it does not mean that they are stupid.

    Fincher is God.
    That is all.

I love Fight Club and Seven, and I really liked Zodiac, but Benjamin Button didn’t do it for me at all. David Fincher does not do well pulling at people’s heartstrings. I don’t know what to say, it just felt too long and didn’t move me the way I think it was supposed to move people.

Alexis. I am just a bit curious about some of the classic films you like that you don’t have to be brain damaged to enjoy.

  • Brad Pitt’s acting coach

    “What’s in the booooox?”

Have loved Fincher since his Madonna music videos days. Knew he would be big. Kudos!

Alexis, you are an idiot. I’m not brain damaged and I’m not obsessed with Brad Pitt, and I thought the movie was great. Jillian Madison’s review is one of the worst reviews I’ve ever read for a movie. It just goes to show how unintelligent she is that she did not understand one thing about the movie. Apparently, you both have the attention span of a four year old. She keeps asking in her review why does so-and-so happen, when all those things were pretty clear in the film. There was no confusion about them (I’m not going to point out any specifics just in case people have not yet seen the film so I don’t wanna spoil it). If anyone is brain damaged. it’s the two of you. And I don’t say that because you didn’t like the film, you have every right to not like it, but because you seem to have not been able to pay any attention to it. Apparently, Jillian was too occupied looking at the greasiness of Brad’s hair. And she may be going blind if she thought it was too dark to see anything.

Being a huge “Alien” and “Aliens” fan, I’ve always wondered what David Fincher’s “Alien 3″ would have been without all the studio meddling on that picture. And I’d like to give props to another Fincher film that doesn’t seem to have been mentioned: “Panic Room”. Not a perfect film (Jared Leto’s scenary chewing DEFINITELY should have been reigned in), but other than that, it’s a pretty kick-ass film.

  • Christopher Kimpel

Why doesn’t anybody ever give props to 1997’s “The Game”?…..another great piece of work, by Fincher.

  • Luisa

Hmmm. So I guess I’m brain damaged and/or obsessed with Brad Pitt because I loved The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Didn’t know those things about myself before, thanks for enlightening me!

  • Alexis

Dave, I suggest you get a sense of humor, and pronto. Still bitter because no one would sleep with you in high school, eh? Ah well, life can be so cruel.
I’ll let you delusional people go back to your Brad butt-kissing now. Happy movie watching. Here’s hoping your peen pump arrives in ‘09.

  • R

    Alexis, are you two?

  • dave

Alexis, not only do you have the attention span of a 4 year old, but it seems you also have the maturity of a 10 year old. How classy.
