What's the TV show you're surprised you watched as a kid?

Trapperjohnharrison_l Ever think back to your childhood TV viewing habits and notice an anomaly, like the fact that amidst all the sitcoms and teen-friendly dramas on your schedule, there was a series like Trapper John, M.D.? I don’t remember any storylines from the show, which ran from 1979 to 1986 (when I was ages 4 to 10), but I do remember my love for Gregory Harrison (pictured). It was pure then–I only found out that he played a stripper in the 1981 TV movie For Ladies Only five minutes ago (clip after the jump!)–and continues to this day (Au Pair and Au Pair II? I’ve seen ‘em both).

What was your anomaly?

I didn’t have a TV in my bedroom until second grade so I ended up watching a lot of what my parents. Shows like Golden Girls, Empty Nest, Cosby Show which were semi-appropriate for a five year old but then there were shows like Perry Mason, Matlock and LA Law which definitely were not!! Also, I have fond memories of watching Doogie Howser, MD as a kid. I can’t remember anything about the show or even specific plot lines but I bet this is where my love for Neil Patrick Harris started!!

of course, this hints at my age – I remember watching Lost in Space when I was around 7 – and then of course years later, Saturday night had to include watching Love Boat AND Fantasy Island – LOL

As a little girl, my one anomaly was actually watching a ‘girl’ show (Stramberry shortcake, lol)- I had two older brothers and grew to love Knight Rider and the A-Team!

  • CC

Little House On The Prairie. I never missed an episode growing up. It wasn’t until years later, as an adult, I realized what a heavy religious message each episode had.

    hart to hart.

No TV in my house so when me and my cousin would hang out it was “Flipper” we were going to buy a house boat and have a dolphin of our own :)

I watched whatever was on WTTG in Washington. Please tell me why any 7 year old girl needs to have seen every episode of MASH. At least twice. Where were my parents?

I loved Fantasy Island, Love Boat, and Dallas as a kid…

  • rls

I was pretty addicted to Dallas when I was in grade school – probably around 8-12 years old were the years I was watching it.

In the 60’s, a version of “Divorce Court” was on a local channel right after I got home from school. I watched it every day. One day a neighbor lady was over and saw me watching it. That was the gossip for weeks in our area.

When the X-Files first came out I was relatively young, yet I still watched it. I really liked it, but I remember having nightmares about an episode a few times.

  • Cory

I also really liked Law and Order and Diagnosis Murder back in the day. My grandma used to watch it, so my sister, cousins, and I all became addicted to them.

Being a child of the 60’s when I was 8 I was watching Love American Style and Room 222 on ABC. I know a lot of both shows went over my head at that age…but then at that age what else are you going to do on a Friday night at 10pm?

like tad said: i, too, watched a lot of family-friendly stuff with the fam (and i *never* had a tv in my room). the anomaly was “hogan family,” mainly ’cause it was a family show i snuck off to watch by myself! cracks me up that, when hiding in the guest room with total tv freedom, i chose those boys and their dad — and good ol’ aunt sandy (who looked a bit like *my* aunt sandi). thru the show, i developed a deep and pure and, turns out, lifelong love of jason bateman. (it was also how i learned that sometimes it’s ok to lock drunk friends in closets [to keep them from driving], and that *everyone* is at risk for AIDS. heaaaaa-vy.)

I’m not that old, but I remember big comfy couch and bannanas in pajamas :)

I watched Beverly Hills 90210 when I was like 9. That just seems messed up.

  • Rich

I saw more of The Waltons than any child should be subjected to. Oh, the days of one TV and three channels.

  • Evil Pam

I LOVED all the ’70’s Quinn/Martin series: The FBI, Mannix, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, etc. They were great!

  • Sandee

Matt Houston, I was in love with him: the A team, Dukes of Hazzards, all of which I watched again a few years ago and was appalled that I actually liked them, but I was 11.

It had to be Dragnet. It wasn’t really by choice my parents watched it so I did too. Then many years ago Dragnet was on Nick-At-Night had it on and I realized how actually funny that show was.

When I was a (very young) kid I watched Dallas, and I LOVED Knots Landing. I also regularly watched CBS soap operas whenever I was home from school and during the summers (As the World Turns, Young and the Restless, Guiding Light). That’s pretty messed up. I’m also a guy. That’s crazy.

I was 4 when “Married With Children” came on, and I loved that show from the start. Of course I didn’t really get most of the humor at that point, but I couldn’t get enough of Al Bundy’s facial expressions. Now I watch reruns and wonder what my parents were thinking.

  • Erin

Cagny & Lacy when I was about 4. I had a cabbage patch doll I named Cagny. And The Golden Girls, of course.

  • Silent E

I agree with the Love Boat Fantasy Island Saturday night. I rented the 1st season of the Love Boat recently, and realized how sexualized that show was. I didn’t catch any of that during my pre-teen viewings. Also, big fan of the first Must-See TV block, Mork and Mindy, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley. Good times!

  • Kate

I watched Silk Stalkings as a kid. That was truly an awful misfit amongst Smurfs, Full House, and Saved by the Bell.

  • michaelb

M*A*S*H seemed to monopolize my childhood TV viewing when I would rather have been watching, say, X-Men. Dad edited them for local syndication, so he had the entire series run before DVDs made that even remotely popular (can you imagine 11 seasons on VHS and Betamax?)!

  • JND

Does anyone remember when NBC owned Tuesday nights? First you had the A Team, then Riptide and Reminginton Steele- IT WAS AWESOME!!

  • Laurie Ann

Matt Houston and Buck Rogers. I had this odd fascination with Pamela Hensley that to this day my mother still makes fun of me for!

  • chilena12

The A-Team and Baywatch were the ones I watched in reruns in the summer. Also, I wasn’t allowed to watch 90210 even though I was a teenager, so I used to sneak upstairs to the tv without cable and pretend I was watching something else!
