Clip du Jour: "Nations of the World"

I loved Animaniacs (as well as Pinky and the Brain) and especially loved watching Yakko Warner tear through his lists of U.S. presidents, states and capitols, and nations of the world (below). Of course, some of these lists are dated: we’ve had George Bush sitting in the Oval Office and there are a dozen or so new countries on the globe. It’s too bad we never got to hear Yakko take on the tongue-twisting ‘Stans of central Asia (i.e, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan). Any other Animaniacs or Pinky fans out there?

This show was absolutely brilliant and, if it were on anywhere, I’d tune in to watch it. In addition to the Warner Bros. (and the Warner sister Dot), I loved the theme song, the Goodfeathers, Pinky and the Brain, and the rest of the crew.

How sad is it that I totally learned this song word for word when I was in the 5th grade?
    Very sad?…or just somewhat?
    …I’m hoping for the latter.

I LOVE Animaniacs! I know the first 2 verses or so of this song.
And there was an episode where they were on a plane and one of them gets the little bag out of the back of the seat and ask the person next to them what it is and the person says “It’s a vomit bag.” and the animaniac says, “No fair. I got gypped. There’s none in mine.” You can bet i replay that scene every time i get on a plane!

I have a Pinky and the Brain inspired license plate. They were just that awesome.

WOW! You’ve dug up my childhood! I LOVED this show! The song segments like this one were by far my favorites, but I was a huge fan of the musical ‘adaptations’ they used to do with the other characters. (And to be fair, it was Wakko who did the States and Capitals, not Yakko). We don’t have anything as entertaining for both kids and adults on television like “Animaniacs” anymore. It was the Looney Tunes for our generation. I still get giggles thinking about their spoof of “Apocalypse Now”.
Hey, are the episodes out in a DVD collectors set? That’s something to consider for Christmas!

I think every Clip du Jour should be Animaniacs-related. One of the funniest, wittiest and double-entendre filled cartoons ever! And the only one I know of who can pull a Lon Chaney reference out of its pants.

My wife memorized the “Presidents” song and she sings it at talent shows and at family get togethers every holiday season. She has had to update it a few times, but it is always popular.

This is my favorite post EVER on this blog! I actually have to sing the US States & Their Capitals to myself when I try to think of them.
    The Band, no the Who.
    Who?
    No, the Band?
That was a great, great bit with Skippy & Slappy

What do you now, I’m a HUGE fan of both Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain =).

Good Idea, Bad Idea; Katie Ka-Boom, Chicken Boo, Buttons and Mindy… God, I was addicted to this show, and I still think it’s smart and funny!

Does anybody else remember Histeria?! Pepper Mills was my absolute favorite cartoon character.
    Also, they spelled Israel wrong!

I also learned this song word for word – which comes in very handy during trivia challenges. Rob Paulsen deserved every Emmy he won for these shows.

    Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarf!
I was more into Pinky and the Brain than Animaniacs, but definitely had a healthy dose of respect for them. When I was at university, Pinky and the Brain would be on every day just around the time I’d get home from class. I’d crawl into bed, watch it, take a quick nap and then head back out for play rehearsals. Ah, the memories!

Not gonna lie: freshman year in college, I listend to Wakko sing the capitals for 3 days straight to help pass my geography mid-term. I got a B-!! Thanks Animaniacs!!

Les Miseranimals made my 90s that’s for sure.

Also, remember when Russia had control of the Ukraine, most of the ’stans, the Baltics and the Caucasus? Putin does too.

    Heellloooooo Nurse!

animaniacs were awesome. AWESOME. I have the CDs and I love to watch whatever i can find online. woohoo.
    the cheese roll call
all the words in the english language
i learned the state capitals through the animaniacs.
plus the rest of the show was awesome too.

Holla! The Great Wakkoratti still has me – and my 4 year old – in stitches. [BRAAAPPPPP] And I find myself randomly singing “The Universe Song”. It was – and is – brilliant!

  • mscisluv

Love this show, and especially this clip. I sometimes watch Animaniacs clips on YouTube, and I actually find them funnier now than when I was a kid. And hey, it was actually educational! Except for spelling for Israel wrong “Isreal”…

  • mscisluv

Oh, and also – not to get political at all (fingers crossed), but Palestine is not a country (and was not at this time, either).

Back when popwatch posted the first Animaniacs clip here, I went and watched it and discovered I really liked it. So, I kept going to all of the related clips to watch more (including this one on the countries). I didn’t like the show when I was younger, but I apparently really like it now.

  • peg

Yes! Animaniacs was and still is awesome. I actually used the states song to memorize all the capitols for a test in 6th grade (and I can still sing that whole song). It’s too bad kids shows now aren’t half as funny as this used to be.

Best cartoon ever. My sister and I own the first three volumes on DVD and are still waiting to buy the fourth one. We also just bought the first season of Freakazoid on DVD. Don’t say Candlejack!

  • Ann

All together now. “Albaniaaaa!” (with jazz hands). Someone I knew always ended the song with that as his big finish, since it’s not listed anywhere in the song. And as for places that aren’t countries – Puerto Rico and Guam are part of the US. They just have them for the rhythm. That’s also why Spanish Sahara gets mentioned.

  • Cricket

Love, Love, LOOOOOOVE the Animaniacs and Pinky & the Brain. When I went to Paris on vacation, I watched them everyday dubbed in French. Very bizarre. I can’t name a single segment because I loved them all…and still do! If I were forced to pick one, I’d have to pick the “Quake” song, especially coming from California. Now I’m going to be spending the next hour youtubing them.

  • Stephanie T.

You must post Pinky and the Brain’s “The Human Brain (to the tune of The Camp Town Race)”. That’s awesome! Pinky is on a bungie cord yelling “BRAIN STEM ! BRAIN STEM!”
Also how about the time Wakko had to go to the potty and said that he could not go into a gas station bathroom. “I can’t go in there! It’s disgusting!”
