The question for me, after seeing this trailer in front of Quantum of Solace, is: What are the faithful gonna say? I sat next to a dude who said "They’re doing this to these fans!?" No one is more adherent to continuity than Trekkers/Trekkies, no one is more mindful of every iota of their characters’ history. I’m one of those fans — and I kinda loved it. Sure, I don’t buy a kid of 13 or so introducing himself with the full, official "James Tiberius Kirk," but lots of stuff blew up good, Zachary Quinto looks and sounds as awesome as we thought he would as Spock, and Uhura took her top off. More happened in these 90 seconds than happened in all of Star Trek: Nemesis.
It could absolutely still suck, but it’s promising. And, again, Uhura took her top off. If that’s not an upside to a reboot, then I don’t know what is. What do you think?

Before people in the audience figured out it was Star Trek, the first reaction I heard about the robotic cop was, “Whoa this looks AWESOME!” then all perceptions seemed to change once they found out what it was they were seeing… I feel the trailer got our audience excited but they were all acting too cool to admit it.
Quinto just continually proves he is totally perfect for this role. He’s the only part of this new ST that I’m excited about.
The blooger seemed very happy about Uhura taking her shirt off. ST has never been very socially conscious on its sexualization of women and Uhura was one of those accidents that was powerful, especially in the films. By sexualizing her even more in the movie takes away what little power she had as a character. Congrats, over sexualize the black woman.
The one thing that made me sqwee with nerd glee was Abrams use of the classic trek title. And the little music of the transporter overtop. LOVED IT. Thats detail.
Will I see it? Yes.
I think Zachary Quinto’s new job is going to be “making otherwise so-so things much more awesome.” First Heroes, then Star Trek.
Also, he and Chris Pine are looking good. Just sayin’.
i don’t even like Star Trek and I’m DEFINITELY seeing that.
You must really be a scifi geek if a woman taking her top off is the most exciting thing for you in the trailer. What a tool!
As for the trailer itself, as a non fan it really did not make me any more interested.
I think I might like to see this. Zachary Quinto is great & I’m excited to see what Simon Pegg does with his role.
The trailer stunk, no ifs and or buts. The matte work was the worst I’ve seen since the second set of Star Wars movies. Quinto, okay, not a bad choice for a young Spock, but, really, folks, when are you going to realize that J.J. Abrams is an Emperor without clothes?
No doubt about it. That was an awesome trailer! The theater that I saw Quantum of Solace in last night was about 60% full and they went absolutely nuts at the opening scene of Star Trek where kid Kirk is sliding towards and then partially off of the edge of the cliff. Collectively, the audience let out a huge gasp. As well, there were so many regenerated details from the series included in the trailer and they all looked and sounded so refreshed. From the uncanny resemblance of the young Spock and young Kirk to the ‘STARTREK’ logo, the sideview of the Enterprise, and the StarTrek theme music leading into the transporter sound effect; FAN-tastic stuff!!! No wonder this thing got pushed to the summer release date of May 8th, 2009. One way to predict a future blockbuster is to listen for chatter after the trailer ends, and people were talking in very excited voice tones. Easily, this is going to be the most anticipated and best Star Trek film in the history of the franchise.
I’m more a fan of the TNG than the original, however I have loved most of what Abrams has given us so far (except for Fringe, which is just so-so) and Quinto is awesome, so I’m definitely seeing it!
I’ve only seen the youtube version, but I’m a long time trek fan, more a fan of the original series and films than any other… but this trailer looks awesome. I don’t want an impersonation of characters I know and love.. I want them to be faithful to what’s essential, not superficial. I think this looks great, and will give the franchise what its been missing. Final judgement reserved for the movie itself, but this trailer looks promising in tone.
I did not realize I was watching the S/T trailer when it first started, but I was impressed. If the movie is as stong as the trailer, WOW.
Loved it. Abrams is the perfect guy to make this reboot work. I’m excited.
I’m not even that much of a Trek fan, though i did enjoy ST.TNG — but i’m definetely there for this one. IT LOOKS FANTASTIC!
i thought that looked pretty cool!
This trailer looks awful. The warped time lines with continuity errors, bland acting (note to all young actors: staring intensely into a camera all the time does not equal great acting), and shoddy story means this will be Star Trek movie number two that I will willfully ignore. Have producers learned nothing from Nemesis? Don’t alienate the fan base, especially when it is already so strong AND multi-generational. Also, they did a bad casting job for Kirk and Spock, they look way too similar, especially in low lighting. It takes a minute to register the ears or uniform color.
I understand Leonard Nemoy is supposed to be in this one. Has he come back from the future to tell Kirk about his destiny? Set him on the right path? Is he the one who tells Kirk, he’ll die alone? And in the pics that were released (see IMDB) there is a photo of Kirk crawling out of an Enterprise escape pod. Why would he need to escape the ship?
I am a ST Next Generation fan more than the original but I though the trailer was interesting. It gave a good look at the new movie without giving too much away. I will definitely be there for its opening day.
I just happened to catch the new trailer yesterday. I am happy to see the fresh new look and the good use of the visual effects available today. I am a Star Trek FREAK and I am not disappointed with the newly designed bridge. They have brought the old bridge back so many times in the different shows and movies that to do it again would be dull. I wonder what Gene Roddenberry would do differently if he had had the tools that the studios have today. I am just so happy that the movie has been made and the franchise is still alive! WHEN ARE THE GOING TO DO THE VOYAGER MOVIE??!!
Thank you JJ for saving Star Trek….this looks like the film we’ve been waiting for…..
You have Uhura getting (partially) naked, Marc, and I have Zachary Quinto making Vulcans sexy. I’m intrigued…
Um, wasn’t Nemesis bad enough?
I’ve been against this reboot from day one and now I’m even more certain that this is just the ultimate kick to the balls of Trek fans. Those people we see are NOT Kirk, Spock, Uhura, etc. – they are copies. Now if the movie manages to say this is some sort of parallel universe or something, that’s one thing…but as it stands right now, the Trek fans have grown to know an dlov eover the years is officially dead and gone.
This movie and anything that comes after it will be Hollywood-ized to death and will bear little resemblance to any Trek that has been established over the past 4 decades.
Whoa. That looks good. I used to be a big trekker until I found better sci-fi like Babylon 5 and Farscape. Really wasn’t expecting to want to see the new movie (especially after the last one) but I might even spring for seeing it in the theater.
I’m fully prepared to accept all kinds of revisionist interpretations of TOS. The same material cannot accomplish the same purpose in a contemporary context.
So I have to wonder when the only shot I see of Uhura is her taking her top off (never mind that they still have the women in skirts — this is a military outfit that for some reason doesn’t outfit its women in pants?!). Why does this film seem less socially progressive than the series that came out 40 years ago?
I am dubious. I’ll see it, obviously — it is after all, *Trek*. But even that won’t help it if it’s offensively stupid.
Looks AWESOME! And no, Uhura taking her unifrm top off was not sexual – it was kick*ss. We got to see 2 seconds of her whole performace, and I’m sure she’ll more than hold her own against the guys.
It looks awesome. Trekkies will whine and complain about it, though, because that’s what Trekkies do. And also why no one is making “Star Trek” for Trekkies anymore. They are pathetic.
I watched the original Trek when I was a kid in HS. I have seen all the Treks SO many times I can play all the parts. I know all the lines. I’ve read the books. I wrote a Trek book. All I gotta say is this looks FANTASTIC
I saw this for the first time today. I thought, “hmm, I’m not sure what to make of it”. From the preview it might be great or it might suck. Hard to say. But I keep remembering how up-in-arms so many Bond fans were when Craig was named. After seeing Casino Royal, many changed their minds pretty fast. I think people need to keep an open mind until they see it. Just my $0.02.
I do agree that Uhura taking her top off is “kick Ass”. I bet she takes a more active roll in this movie. She looks tough! I bet the guys take their shirts off too.
This is the best trailer I’ve seen. Now I realize how awesome this movie is going to be. It has Star Wars, Blade Runner, THX, Lord of the Rings in it. Come on people. You now this movie will kill.
It’ll make money the first week. But this isn’t going to work.
Star Trek has exhausted all possible narrative threads. How many movies and TV shows does any concept have in it? If you change the rules too much, fans won’t like it; if you don’t change the rules, you can’t do anything new. It’s boxed in by its own universe. Leave on….
