At what hour can you start playing music loudly?

The answer, dear downstairs neighbor, is not 7:30 a.m.!

In a dream world, I would never be forced to hear my neighbor’s music: I find any noise I can’t control annoying, and, frankly, the verdict is still out on his taste. But, life isn’t perfect. So I need to know: How early — and how late — can you play music loudly without hearing my passive-aggressive stomps on your ceiling

I think 9 a.m is the earliest you should start on a weekday, 11 a.m. on a weekend. I’d cut you off at 11 p.m. on a weeknight, and 12:30 a.m. on a weekend (though you should know I hate you for interfering with my prime-time viewing, period).

Your hours?

Well seeing that my father started blasting the stereo at 7:45 this morning when he started cleaning the house I am inclined to agree with you.

I love this. I think my ex neighbour was hella crazy playing music at 6:00 am on a Tuesday morning for everyone to hear. My rule is 10:00 am during the week, 11:00 am on the weekend(I want to sleep late too); 10:00 pm to end on a weekday, 11:30 on a weekend. The same goes for running vaccuum cleaners and wearing high-heeled shoes around the apartment

My next door neighbor is currently learning the bass guitar. Scales (poorly played) at every hour of the day. Horrible. Just HORRIBLE.

10:00am-9:00pm weekdays, 11:00am-10:00pm weekends. This also goes for inconsiderate upstairs neighors who allow their toddlers to run incessantly from one end of the apt to the other on hardwood floors in preparation for jumping on the bed above my bedroom ceiling so the whole place shakes–AT MIDNIGHT. EVERY night. And apt mgrs who refuse to stop it “because you can’t discriminate against people have children”. Who’s discriminating? I just need SLEEP. Personally I think they should have chipped in on my recent move, since they were the main reason for it.

Forward the rude guy this, or slip it under his door, and see if he gets the hint

The rule should go as this – keep in mind what people do for a living. I have teachers who live all around me, so they have to be out the door to work by 7 am. Which means they tend to go to bed early. I go by the rule that 9 am to 10 pm, all is fair (within reason). I also try to keep my stereo and TV off a common wall, so in theory, I’m only disturbing the person above me, not them and the people beside me. On the weekends, I’ll give a later time on loud noise, but myself, I try and keep the music lower after 10.

Oh, and vacuum cleaners/lawn mowers operate on the same music theory. In apartments or townhomes or even condos – any place where you’re living one on top of another and share a common wall – it’s important to keep the super loud things down. In a neighborhood with houses, lawn mowers shouldn’t be operated before 9 am (at the earliest).

All loud noises should be between 10am – 10pm, seven days a week. This includes music, phone calls, lawnmowers, everything.

Well I like to play my music loudly but I have a rule
I can play anything after 12pm ( I assume some of my neighbors work the night shift and sleep in the mornings) and I shut off by 10 pm. If I have guests over, say holidays, I let the neighbors know I might be a little loud a little later. They’re always cool about it.

My rule of thumb is, I don’t care what time it is, I should never have to hear someone else’s music inside my house!

I finally get to vent about this! For the longest my downstairs neighbor loves to blast his stereo every Friday night from around 10pm to 1am. It drives me mad!!! Then, my upstairs neighbor fell in love with techno and proceeds to play that in the afternoons on the weekends. I get no peace! There really should be a curfew for noise. I get that I live in NYC, but give me break already!

I used to call 311 on my neighbors across the street all the time. It’s 1:00 am and you live ACROSS THE STREET! It’s NY, but still, come on. That’s just ludicrous. I felt like the cranky old lady who kids would throw crap at, but I didn’t care.

I called the cops so many times on neighbors at my old apartment it was nuts. I even once called the cops on two consecutive weeknights on the same neighbors, they had the music on so loud at 1am that my floor was vibrating.

    Amen!

This morning I was woken up at 6:30, not to my upstairs neighbor playing music, but to him singing at the top of his lungs. And at 8:15, he was still going strong.
