PopWatch Confessional: Not-so scary movies that scare you silly

It’s not always the Freddies or Jasons of the world that give me the shivers. Sometimes it’s the most banal, inconsequential movies that send me scurrying under the covers. When I was a kid, that flick was The Hugga Bunch movie. Yes, a film about plushy dolls with a penchant for embracing haunted my nightmares. Check it out here, and tell me it isn’t creepy:

But I’m not the only one with irrational movie fears. Here’s a selection from the EW.com staff:

  • Jean Bentley’s inexplicable fear of space makes Wall-E (specifically the scene where they’re playing outside the spaceship), a creepy cartoon affair.
  • It’s not a movie, but Marc Vera still gets goosebumps watching the HBO theme, which terrified him as a tyke.
  • Jami Lundborg finds FernGully frightening.
  • Christmas is scarier than Halloween for Jamie Levinson, who wigs out when Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer pops up on TV.
  • Perhaps echoing many a ’70s kids’ fears, Gary Susman ranks the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory right up there.
  • While Mark Luckie never wants to see shrinking kids again.

It’s your turn PopWatchers. Get it off your chests: Which movie inexplicably gives you the heebeegeebees?

although I LOVE the movie, the brainwashing scene in zoolander scares the crap out of me– especially when mugatu starts to do that “hahaha” laugh. oh man– runs me out of the room everytime. eeks!

Not sure if this counts, but Neverending Story and the Dark Crystal scared the beejesus out of me as a kid.

I fast forward through the rat part at the end of Lady and the Tramp. It gave me the heebie jeebies when I was little and it still gives me the jitters now. Also, I agree with JMC… that wolf thing in Neverending Story terrified me.

Labyrinth scared me in so many ways. All the muppets were creepy… David Bowie’s hair freaked me out… the hands that catch her when she’s falling… the baby was even scary!

Labyrinth the movie scared me to death! We watched it in class in 6th grade and I was trying to be cool, but deep down I was freaking out!

Oh man, “The Hugga Bunch” was so freaky! When I was young I liked it, but the witch or queen or whoever she was scared me so much!
See, I had no problem with Labryinth or Dark Crystal, but “Death Becomes Her” made me lie awake at night petrified. So weird.

I too was terrified by the hugga bunch as a kid! My mother for YEARS thought I loved that doll and placed her in bed with me, green eyes staring over at night. We laugh about it today, but that link actually brought tears to my eyes when I watched it. And not the good kind of tears. Who would have thought?!

Ok I know I am a loser, but the scariest movie for me was Signs. I know, I know, but I cried when the little kids at the birthday party in South America see the alien walking out of the bushes. Even remembering it as I type this is making my heart beat fast. (I am a dork)

Hands down, no contest the Black Cauldron by WALT FREAKIN’ DISNEY! I know there’s always scary parts in Disney movies but that whole thing was a scary part. I still refuse to watch it.
Also, I got over it, but the R.O.U.S.’s in the Princess Bride consistently forced me to hide behind the couch when I was younger. “Rodent’s of unusual size? I don’t think they exist.” BAM! TER-ROAR

ET scared me when I was little and I still get uncomfortable when it’s on

WALL.E was only scary because of the moridly obese people on the barcaloungers drinking huge sodas. When my brother and came out of the theater and we saw all of these people with huge buckets of popcorn waiting to see the movie, we were like, oh my g-d!
The Days of Our Lives theme, and The Young and the Restless themes freak me out. I can never sit and watch those soaps.

I agree with the original Willie Wonka movie assessment. Completely creeped me out. Still can’t watch it. But I loved the remake for some odd reason (ok, because of my jones for all things Depp and Burton). And for some reason when I was really young, both Mr. Rogers and Captain Kangaroo creeped me out.

I totally agree with the Labyrinth thing… but I also get completely creeped out at the Pink Elephant part in Dumbo – I can’t handle it!

Oh my God! Hugga Bunch use to scare the crap out of me. Actually. It still kinda does. I mean, who ever thought those dolls were cute????
Also, The Heffalumps and Woozles from Winnie the Pooh! It’s just so weird. The song adds to the total creepiness too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLnADKgurvc
