Russell Brand prank: Too far (or is that the whole point)?

We’ve thus far avoided this story about Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross leaving lewd messages on an actor’s voice mail on Brand’s Oct. 18 BBC radio show, thinking it to be more of a "British thing." But today, after the BBC indefinitely suspended both Brand and Ross and British PrimeMinister Gordon Brown admonished the duo in the wake of some 18,000listener complaints, we can hold out no longer. The message (which can be heard below)features Ross telling 78-year-old Andrew Sachs that Brand "f—-d" thegranddaughter of the actor, who is known for playing Spanish waiter Manuel on FawltyTowers. It’s not really all that funny; the Jerky Boys made far cleverer prank callssome 15 years ago. We’re not sure what it’ll mean for Brand’s career onBBC radio, but the British comedian’s attempt to breakoutStateside likely won’t be helped by this mean stunt that has him come off likea giggling tool. But please, see for yourself and let us know what youthink.

UPDATE: Brand resigned from his BBC radio show today. "As I only do the radio show to make people laugh I’ve decided thatgiven the subsequent coverage I will stop doing the show," Brand said. "I got a bit caught up in the moment and forgot that at the core of therude comments and silly songs were the real feelings of a beloved andbrilliant comic actor and a very sweet and big hearted young woman."

Mike, I think you summed it up perfectly when you called him a giggling tool. Perfect.

  • Jill

Was it distasteful? Yes. But that’s Russell. He talks about his sex life openly and she knew that getting into bed with him. That’s not to say she is to blame but the only person who should be offended in the grandfather.
Everyone else needs to grow up. You know what you are going to hear when you listen to Russell’s show and you know he is going to talk about you when you sleep with him.

Hey, nitz. Hey, jerky. I want to buy a house, Dad. It’s gotta be big.
    Shut up, jerky.

Russell definitely needs to be taught a lesson this time, a lesson in comedy. How an intelligent human being, who rates among his idols the one and only Bill Hicks, can so misunderstand the term controversial comedian is beyond me. Much worse though is the blatant misogyny from someone I’d thought was one of the cool guys.

I love Russell Brand. He is a tool, vain, and he knows it. If you don’t like Russell, don’t listen.

russell brand rocks!!! he pushes the envelope, and it doesn’t matter how far he goes, it’s still humor. people who are offended just shouldn’t listen. Controversy sells and this will only help him

Brand & Ross are not peodofiles, murderes, rapists, terrorists and they are not responsible for the world credit crunch. But they are controversal presenters & comedians. The people who have complained, the media, the government & the BBC need to get this in perspective and look at what else is going on in the world and get a grip. Its also easy to switch off if you dont like it and leave those of us that do to listen in peace.

    He’s a bastard,plain and simple.

Russell Brand can be very funny at times but this is lame. Jonathan Ross is never funny so this I would expect nothing else from him. Ross is Britain’s version of Jay Leno. His ‘interviews’ consist of him waiting for the next punchline, usually a double entendre, instead of helping his guest tell a story.

Russell brand is Soooo funny…. Has Gordon Brown and everyone else not got anything better do with there time… there are wars going on, the economy has crashed… Spend your time and effort sorting that out!!

  • mkeller

how can this possibly qualify as a scandal? the show was funny. i can understand why sachs is pissed, but taking them off the air only shows how backwards and prudish the BBC really is. wake up, england, the world has a few other important things going on if you really need to work up a snit about something.

If you fucks don’t like Russel then don’t have him. He outshone EVERYONE in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and is the star of the Tonight Show whenever he is on. You all (sorry Y’all) must know how libelous and vile the UK press is and have ruined many more careers than you would believe and are suspects in the murder of a royal. How dare anyone say that Russell and Johnathan should be axed until Fleet Street is empty and fonejacker (unfunny UK prank call show) is off the air.

  • beccy

i totally agree with you lola!!! this kinda thing happens to every day ppl all the time, funny phone calls and the lot, why should russel and john, wh enterain people get punished for something that so many other ppl do and dnt get punished at all!! once again celebrities are gettin sepcial treatment.

  • PeterBilt The Nature Boy

Hmm, in this day and age nothing surprises me anymore in terms of that stuff. But to me he’s a no talent ass clown. Maybe its just me, but I thought Fawlty Towers was 1000 times funnier than anything Russell Brand ever did.
