PopWatch Previewer: '17 Again,' 'Underworld 3,' and more!

17 Again

Plot: Down-and-out 37-year-old falls off a bridge and magically comes back as a 17-year-old version of himself (Zac Efron).

Looks like:
Big, but backwards.

Verdict:
Funny, charming, AND occasionally shirtless — we’d say Efron is graduating from High School Musical with honors.

More previews after the jump…

Push

Plot: A group of super-powered mutants (Dakota Fanning, Chris Evans, Camilla Belle) fight bad guys.

Looks like:
Heroes. Or X-Men. Take your pick.

Verdict:
Points for offbeat casting, but we like our superheroes to be a little more… super.

Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans

Plot: A vampire aristocrat (Rhona Mitra) falls in love with a werewolf slave (Michael Sheen), who leads an uprising.

Looks like:
Gladiator goes to the Renaissance Faire.

Verdict:
Kate Beckinsale’s gone, but fantasy/horror fans can still get their fix of monsters, fangs, and hot vampire-on-werewolf action. (Hope they have a safe word!)

I hate the fact that I’m starting to like Zac Efron, dang it. My nieces will be so happy that I’m breaking down.

Despite the fact that Matthew Perry inexplicably immediately has a trendy haircut when he’s 17 again, the movie looks like it’ll be all right for what it is (backhanded compliment alert!)
I think “Push” looks pretty interesting. I like the cast too, and, although the characters’ powers are obviously familiar, it’s nice to see something that isn’t an adaptation of something else. Ok, so it looks like a bit too much like “Heroes”, but “Heroes” often looks a bit too much like “X-Men”, so whatever.

17 Again looks so adorable. Also, yay Thomas Lennon!

Zac who? 2 words: Hunter Parrish.

I am having a moment like the first time I heard “Cry Me a River” and discovered I liked Justin Timberlake. I thought hell had frozen over. Nice to see Zac Efron is better than his HSM material. (Yeah, I called is HSM- I have eight year old- it is required.) I want to go see this for sure.

  • Wes

Okay, I admit I laughed at the 17 Again trailer. But how hard is the next decade going to be on Zac E if he’s going to turn into Mathew Perry? Yikes. Stay off the smokes, kid.

  • jae

um…am i the only one wishing hollywood would stop remaking the same concepts? that looks painfully generic.

  • fancypants

efron better hope his career ends up like Tom Hanks, not Matthew Perry.

  • meredith

Ditto to what Wes said. My first thought was, “Eek! I hope Zac Efron doesn’t end up looking like Matthew Perry!” But it looks my only somewhat inappropriate crush on Zac (he’s 21 now!) isn’t going away.

I think Push looks interesting. Yeah, it’s reminiscent of Heroes and X-Men, but it looks cool, plus Chris Evans and Djimon Hounsou! What’s not to like?

  • Snarf

Rise of the Lycons? Um, didn’t they sort of explain all of that in Underworld 2?

  • buckeyemama

I love me some Thomas Lennon!!

  • Jessica S

I actually really want to see “17 Again”. I’ve got that not-so-innapropriate crush on Zac which pretty much guarantees I’ll see it on the big screen. I hope that he is able to continue to break away from the Disney machine.

  • Diana

Just another ZE movie I’ll have to see to support my inappropriate crush on him :)

  • elena

I saw the preview for “17 Again” before HSM 3 (it makes sense, marketing-wise!) and I totally agree with Adam’s review. Zach Efron is going light-years away from HSM and gonna be a bona-fide movie star, yeah! Plus, he does hot guy funny-yet-just-a-little-bit-awkward better than anyone else. That’s one of the reasons HSM works so well, because he’s so charismatic and emote-y.

  • Susan

Is the Michael Sheen in “Underworld 3″ the same one who interviews former Dracula Frank Langella in “Frost/Nixon”?

  • Heather

Susan – yes it is. He was also in The Queen (as Tony Blair)

  • Raven_Moon

“17 Again” looks pretty funny. I love Matthew Perry & Zak Efron, thanks to “Hairspray, is the only HSM-person I can stand. “Push” looks kind of odd, but I’ll wait for reviews. “Underworld 3″ just seems a bit unnecessary.

  • Jeff

Well, as for the new Underworld. I have to say I was expecting them to go a completely different direction. I’m really sad that KB won’t be in this one. From the trailer, i can’t say i’m to thrilled to see this when it comes out. I least I have the first two to watch on repeat.
