As a very loyal Dawson’s Creek fan, I was about as excited as Dawson Leery getting a director’s cut DVD of A.I. for Creek star Katie Holmes’ return to television. She played a clumsy lawyer named Grace on last night’s episode of ABC’s Eli Stone and was surprisingly good. Holmes was sweet and charming and totally made you forget that she’s the woman who gave birth to Suri (oh and the wife of Tom Cruise)! And she displayed impressive singing and dancing skills while performing Duke Ellington’s "Hit Me With a Hot Note" during an Eli hallucination (although I kinda knew that she could sing and dance after watching the Dawson’s Creek True Hollywood Story and I think at least one or two Jules Asner/E! specials on Holmes).
But it did make me wish Holmes would get back to doing films that actually give her characters to play, like Wonder Boys and Pieces of April, instead of bigger flicks, like Abandon and Mad Money, that offer scant challenges and, to be honest, completely blow. I could see Holmes actually carving out an Anne Hathaway-ish path on the big screen. And if that doesn’t work, well she’s always welcome back on the small screen. What do you think Pop Watchers?

I’m sorry, but did Tim not see “Batman Begins”? She was definitely the weak link of that cast. Maggie Gyllenhaal was a major upgrade in “The Dark Knight.” You can definitely quibble with some of Katie’s project choices, but I don’t think she really has the chops to do much more than a “pretty lady in peril” role.
I want her back on the show!
Im even more sorry to see how ugly Maggie was on The Dark Knight. Bad acting as the D.A. and no chemistry with either actors on the movie. I preferred Katie on the Batman movie.
And Im sorry I didn’t see Eli Stone but critics are surely smitten over Holmes.
Katie is a lovely girl who would be so much better off whithout Tom Cruise. He is old enough to be her dad.
She did knocked it out of the park and I was rooting for her to stay at the airport and be with Eli. I even shed some tears when she cried after their kiss. The singing and dancing was a real treat because I had no idea about this hidden talent of hers.
I enjoyed her character on Eli, but the whole time I was watching I just kept thinking she looks a little thin and bony. I seem to remember her being very pretty (and healthy looking) just a couple years ago.
Im now in love with Katie Holmes. While I didnt see the episode the commercials of her singing and dancing was a complete turn on.
If I wanted to see a 59 year old woman (Katie post-Tom brainwash) act, then I would watch someone with talent like Meryl Streep on Broadway.
i think holmes is unfairly underrated. i couldn’t care less about ‘dawson’s creek’, but i do love my batman, and think the flack she got was driven by playing an ex cathedra character (and being married to someone who says WIERD stuff on tv) – not because of her performance, which there was nothin’ wrong with. i think the girl deserves a fair shake as far as her acting abilities, which are nothing to sneeza at.
After seeing Katie in Pieces of April and Batman Begins, I had high hopes for her career. Now, I’m worried she’s going to slip into the background and just be “Mrs. Tom Cruise” instead of a serious actress. I don’t even care if she’s in movies or some other medium, as long as she doing good work.
I never gave much thought to Katie Holmes until I saw her in films like “Wonder Boys” & “Thank You for Smoking.” She has talent & a lot of potential. Her career seemed on the rise until her marriage to Tom. Then she became more famous for all the wrong reasons. Alas. She was good on “Eli Stone,” though. I hope to see her in future episodes.
She is refreshing to watch and even with little scenes she has she dominates and crackles with energy when she and Miller are together. I think Katie is “Grace” with how she handles the media and tabloid pressures on her add she is super classy and talented. Most actresses married to famous actors become props with their careers but I think Katie will be a different story. She brings hype to everything she does but she delivers.
Brought back memories of Katie years back on NBC’s SNL showing off her comic chops and her singing and tap dancing gifts that brought down the house. Last night Katie stole the show bringing the much needed emotional resonance for this drowning show. Regarding Batman thrills were in that Maggie took over Katie but when people saw her on The Dark Knight the love movement made its way back to Katie.Maggie cant hold a candle to Katie as Batman’s love interest. It does not help the purpose was just for Rachel to die and the script so bad you think George Lucas is behind it not Nolan. Maggie should actually stay away from Batman chat rooms, polls, youtube and boards because the hostility towards her might make her cry.
Katie Holmes back to her cool old ways? Not as long as she’s chained up in Cruise’s basement giving silent birth and hoping the alien leftovers are removed from her bloodstream. Oh, not PC? I don’t care.
I have to agree with the last post Katie Holmes just doesn’t have the “CHOPS” for a massive career in hollywood. Every time I read or hear the hype about her upcoming projects I’m really interested to see what chances she will be taking but her performances always leave me limp and I wonder why all the HOOPLA it must just be TOM. I did like the overall story in the Eli Stone episode but again I could see a number of other female actors playing the same role just as well if not better!
What’s wrong with Suri? Or Cruise? All babies are heavenly blessings and none of us know this people personally nor its our business to judge. Why the crazies over one’s religion? Did the world mandate a one true and only religion for all citizens to obey? All I know is America is the land of the free and that includes freedom of beliefs and religion. Reporters today and media outlets claims elitism when the sad fact is they are all the same and they sound just like the tabloids. The corrupt media appeals only to the lowest common denominators.
The purpose of this stunt casting of Holmes was to lure new viewers like my husband and I but Im sad to admit the show does not hold my interest. Eli and Grace have a great chemistry and I like his secretary but the rest of the cast and stories are stale. The story about the military burial left me cold. Im not even a fan of Katie Holmes but my husband and I thought she was wonderful.
Katie’s act was a cute dance but totally a Marilyn Monroe impersonation to every move. Unoriginal and edited, not a complete performance.
I have always loved Katie Holmes. I never watched Dawson’s Creek until the episode of just her and the guy who mugged her, then he got hit by a car. She carried the whole episode and I became a huge fan. I take no notice of her being Mrs. Tom Cruise because it doesn’t affect her acting!
I hope she gets more television roles because that could potentially keep her OFF of the New York stage for good. She is dead weight in that show.
This is not to say I enjoy watching her squish her smile over to the right side of her face to express emotion in a closeup, nor am I fond of watching her talk out of the side of her mouth.
Just get her off the stage.
I always loved Katie as the adorable, animated, funny actress of the Ice Storm and earlier movies. I worry about her now. She is gaunt, and somewhat “stepford wife” like, but glad she is stepping” out of the box” to do more acting.
She’s remarkable.
I echo what Diane Sawyer said on GMA ” A Star is Born”. She’s also so beautiful on the elegant black suit and even still adorable dressed down.
She and Eli were just adorable.
Katie was great and this Eli Stone series has lots of potential. But what is with the haters on here? Damn liberals have become such hate filled attack machine psychopaths its scary.
I was astounded with her performance on Eli Stone. I did not know what her abilies were. She should push forward, ignore hubby’s thumb and get a new agent. Katie, you are da bomb! Try out for Chicago or similar. You are fantastic! (ps-I am female and not gay)
I realize that most of you will post and never return.
To jim tucker-what does ‘liberal’ have to do with it? I am as liberal as they come and I love this show.
To June-stunt casting for whom? The show or Katie? So what. The show is great, the actors are first caliber and Ms Holmes obviously needs the exposure because her talents have been deeply hidden.
I don’t get why people hated Maggie as Rachel in The Dark Knight. I guess it is because I am female and less apt to dislike someone because of their looks, but I think Maggie is beautiful and has carried her own weight in the movies. I loved her in the latest Batman movie and saw it as a vast improvement over Katie Holmes. That being said, I also adore Katie. I was a DC fan for years and was happy to see her branch out outside of the show into movies. She did excellent in The Gift (haven’t seen it? Rent it). I know she has the ability to do more. I’m afraid that being Tom’s wife is more distracting to her career than it is helping it. PS to Kim – I enjoy watching her sideways smile and talking out of the side of her mouth.
Loved having her back on the small screen, but i did miss the usual ‘Cut ot Katie’ take that so populated her Creek days.
She is getting glowing reviews on All my Sons so Katie should do a musical play or even a musical film.
Katie was dynamite! Grace and Eli are so darn cute you cheer them on to be together!
