We need your 'Must List' suggestions!

Categories: Must List

So, let’s see, it’s been a year now since Radiohead released In Rainbows online via a novel pay-what-you-like plan that was supposed to change the way music is sold. Has it? So far, it seems almost no one has followed in Radiohead’s footsteps, as the industry continues to take a wait-and-see attitude toward whatever is the next giant paradigm shift. The only lasting legacy to date is the set’s excellent music. The quintet has lent one track, "Nude," to the folks at Variety, who’ve set the tune to this cool video of time-lapse footage taken amid the splendor of the Rocky Mountains at this year’s Telluride Film Festival. (Man, does this ever make me homesick for Colorado!)

This video is my Must List pick of the week. What are yours? Please list up to three of your musts in current movies/music/TV/books/games/online. Don’t forget to include your e-mail address so that we can cite you if we choose your submission for the magazine. Deadline is 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, Oct. 16.

I’m loving the new The Streets’ album “Everything is Borrowed.” It sounds like he wrote is after a Walden-like retreat. It’s smart and musically ambitious and refreshingly irony-free.

  • Cara

    1. James Marsden in “Sex Drive”–Even in the promos, he’s stealing the show as he attacks yet another genre. This guy absolutely refuses to be pigeonholed.
    2. Lucinda Williams, “Little Honey”–The first true return to form since “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road”.
    3. Steve Martin’s “Don’t Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford” SNL skit–Somehow, this suddenly seems pretty relevant. http://consumerist.com/consumer/clips/snl-skit-dont-buy-stuff-you-cant-afford-252491.php
    4. “Chuck” season 2–Wait a second, when did this show get hilarious? …Is there a word for a reverse sophomore slump?

  • Minutiae

“Watch Over You” by Alter Bridge. It may not be an edgy pick, but the song that’s now being used by VH-1 to promote its latest season of Celebrity Rehab deserves to be heard for Myles Kennedy’s amazing vocal, if for no other reason.

  • Torin

The Unit: I’ve loved this show since the first episode, even though the first half of Season 2 wasn’t that great, but Season 4 has been amazing.

  • Kent Bailey

Beth Grant in “Sordid Lives: The Series”. Never has white trash been so funny! She deserves an Emmy for her role in this series…

  • maggie

Not sure if this goes under movies, online, or what but I have to include the new full length trailer for “Twilight.” After watching this trailer, I know that Summit Entertainment and Catherine Hardwicke definitely have a hit on their hands. The trailer offered a great balance of the story line and it appeals to both men and women…romance and a kick ass fight scene (which I am both excited about!).
TV: I watched the premier of “My Own Worst Enemy” on CBS. I was a little skeptical of Christian Slater, but I am hooked on this show. My eyes were glued to the screen scene after scene.

  • Charlee

Twilight trailer. AMAZING. Especially when you watch it in gorgeous full-screen HD in the dark. Try it. [fangirl squeel]

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” is awesome! It shows that all the money in the world (or your husband’s pro salary) cannot buy class!

  • John

One other lasting effect of Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” release was the sneak-attack nature of its announcement. The band announced the album’s release just one week ahead of time, a tactic numerous other groups have taken since then – the Raconteurs, Beck and Bloc Party among them. But no one else has tried the pay-what-you-want trick.

  • Jennifer

    1) The Twilight trailer
    2) Adam Baldwin on Chuck
    3) The Genius feature on itunes

  • Tommy

    1. Katy Perry – “Hot N Cold”. The song AND the video. The 80s are back! Again!

  • Daniel

    – “The Sarah Silverman Program” – Catch up with Season 2 on DVD while simultaneously watching the current season on Comedy Central.
    – “South Park” – the new season is already shocking and offending just about everyone with its take on “Indy 4.”
    – “Heroes” – Much as I hate to admit it to my ‘tough-critic’ friends, Season 3 has indeed been enjoyable… at least compared to its dreaded sophomore year. I could do without Mohinderfly, though.

margot and the nuclear so and so’s animal/not animal is awesome.
how i met your mother is so on point this year it’s insane.

  • NineDaves

the return of the divas. beyonce, pink, britney, and christina all have new songs out. it’s like 1999 all over again.

  • elena

Totally with Cara, Chuck is ROCKING it this season, and how sad is it that no one is watching it? WHERE DID YOU GO, VIEWERS? Come back!
Anyways, I have to say that the addicting stuttering and many costumes of Ms. Britney Spears is making “Womanizer” really popular in my itunes (and my youtube views).
Brea Grant as Daphne, the speedster with spunk, is a light in the otherwise so-so world of Heroes Season 3.
And! Attack of the Show, led by its charismatic and slightly inappropriate leads Olivia Munn and Kevin Pereira, keeps all tech-savvy people up-to-date with the world of nerd culture.

  • Raven_Moon

    1. “True Blood”: The show was iffy at first, but now I can’t wait to see what happens next.
    2. “Sally’s Song” performed by Amy Lee: Beautiful.
    3. “Pushing Daises”: I love Lee Pace as Ned.

  • paige

HELL-O HOW BOUT THE QUEEN OF POP MADONNA’S AMAZING PERFORMANCE AT MSG???? C’MON EW! WHAT IS WITH THE MADONNA HATE?!?!?! THE WOMAN IS THE EPITOME OF ENTERTAINMENT AND EVERY OTHER MAGAZINE HAS RESPONDED TO HER CONCERT EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE!

  • wildecat

    1. Michael Imperioli’s awesome Fu Manchu on “Life on Mars” – he’s rockin’ it!
    2. “Heroes” – Monday’s episode made me a believer again
    3. “The Mentalist” – purely for the oh-so-yumminess that is Simon Baker

  • Erin

The new Twilight trailer is a definite MUST this week. I was a bit doubtful of the movie (thanks to the not so good first trailer and the unattractive posters), but my hope has been restored thanks to this trailer. And that kiss…oh wow. November 21st can’t come soon enough!

  • Pete

Rock of Love: Charm School — Looking to rival the past season in hilarity, charm, and (yes) tackiness. Did you all see that apple hit Lacey in the head??

  • Kristen

Slacker.com – is the best place for online tunes all day long
    Jim and Pam are engaged!!!
    Welcome back South Park

  • Erica

Eli Stone. I am so excited for this show to come back–and all the singing and dancing I’m seeing in the commercial outweigh any Katie Holmes fatigue I may have. It is a lovely, funny show.

  • Rhonda

Stargate Atlantis – of course this is the last season, but it’s the best
    Sanctuary on SciFi

  • ElectAPromQueen? (maybe not)

The pop diva cat war that is brewing among Britney, Pink, Beyonce, Ciara, Brandy, Rihanna, and Metrosexual Diva Kanye West. Yes it is like 1999 all over again, Meow.

  • Kath

This isn’t a Must List suggestion, it’s an irritated correction.
Plenty of artists have “followed in Radiohead’s footsteps”; in fact, some artists GOT THERE FIRST. Kristin Hersh’s band 50 Foot Wave released their EP “Free Music” at no cost (with a tip jar) on their website and got over 2 million downloads. Jane Siberry did the pay-what-you-want thing before Radiohead, in MUCH more detail.
But nobody ever remembers this, even though both these artists have been around for just as long as (or even longer than) Radiohead.

  • Jason P

World of Goo – a unique and completely addicting game downloadable from the WiiWare service on the Wii.

  • B.

Dear John (ha!) there was another very big band that did the pay-what-you-want “trick”, Nine Inch Nails! In my opinion Trent Reznor did it better because it wasn’t just an experiment for him, it’s the way he is releasing his music now.
For the love gawd, no more Britney Spears. Beyonce’s new singles are much better.
Current TV’s Hack The Debate which they give Twitters the chance to weigh in on what the candidates are saying.
True Blood for finally becoming good.

  • Alex

    1. Doctor Who!! I can’t get enough of David Tennant’s insanely infectious energy and I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with this wacky, wonderful and incredibly loving alien.
    2. Era Vulgaris – Queens of the Stone Age — Since we’re celebrating great music from last year I’d like to add the criminally undervalued album from QOTSA. Its grimy, sexy, dirt rock and is perfect for steamy nights betw the sheets :)
    3. Er, can’t think of much else…

  • RockHer

I agree with Minutiae. I think Alter Bridge’s “Watch Over You” should be on the Must List. You can judge for yourself by going to their site to see their video on http://www.alterbridge.com. I think it’s an emotionally powerful song with a message.

  • anne a.

    1. Twilight
    2. True Blood
