It’s a crazy fantasy we’ve all had: you know, the one where your singing so impresses a rock star (who happens to be standing nearby) that he then invites you to perform with him in front of 20,000 screaming fans. Well, it actually happened to one Jessica Ketola of Edmonds, Washington. Ketola, a 37-year-old mother of four children and a church music director, works for Unitus, a non-profit organization dealing with global poverty that was a charitable partner on the recent Police tour. As such, she was invited to sing into the mic during the sound check before a July 12 concert. Okay, so you see where this is all going. Her swell version of "Every Breath You Take" (see clip below) got the attention of the band’s singer and bass player (some guy named Sting). Who, oh, only asked her to join them for a song during that night’s show (where he would introduce her as "my discovery"). "Sting brought me water," she told a local paper, "How cool is that?" I say: good person, good rock star, good story. Anyone have a similar experience they’d like to share? Or wanna tell us which band or star they’ve regularly performed with in their dreams? I’ve always wanted to sing backup with Paul McCartney. Just once. Pleeease?
That is sooo great. And she looks like such a mom! (Ah, meaning me.) Except I couldn’t knock it out of the park like she did. But I have spent long drives imagining myself up there with Bruce.
In the great rock star vein…..1983 at a U2 show I had slept out to get front row tickets. During the show the crowd shoved forward and pushed me into the stage. Bono stopped singing, reached down and grabbed my hand. He then pulled me up on stage and asked everyone to step back and lowered me back down.
It’s so nice to read a story about genuinely awesome good-guy behavior from a celebrity, that was so clearly not about getting attention. Yeah, Sting!
OK, so I never got to sing with The Police. But it’s still a funny story …
At our wedding last month, we hit up the hotel bar after the reception and it was karaoke night. My husband was coaxed on stage by some friends to sing “Never Been Any Reason” by 70s rock band Head East, who also happened to be sitting in the bar (they were in town playing at a summer music festival and his buddies knew it). We were oblivious to this fact, of course. Anyway, my husband beckoned me on stage, so I joined him (wedding dress and all) and then the next thing we know, the lead singer of Head East lets out a “yeaaaaaahhhhhh!” rock star scream. The whole bar was on its feet while the bride, groom and two members of Head East brought it home with “Save my life I”m going down for the last time!” The first, and only, time I will ever feel like a rock star. 4 years ago, I got picked out of the audience to sing with Barry Manilow at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. What a great moment that was.
