Apparently, many twentysomethings don't know KLF's '3 A.M. Eternal'

I recently discovered that a colleague of mine (who shall remain nameless, but who earlier today embedded on PopWatch a video of her telephone conversation with the hotness that is Maksim Chmerkovskiy) had never heard the KLF’s "3 a.m. Eternal." This made me sad as hell, because it means there are generations of adults in this country who don’t vividly remember a time when a top 10 hit could contain lyrics as nonsensical magical as "Down with the crew, crew/ Talkin’ about the Mu Mu/ Justified Ancient Liberation Zulu!"

For the uninitiated, it’s time to press play below. For those of you know know the drill, all together now: "KLF! UH-HUH. UH-HUH, UH-HUH."

FYI, I didn’t feel the need to discuss "Justified and Ancient," KLF’s smash-hit collaboration with Tammy Wynette, because I know it’s universally recognized and revered. I am only embedding it after the jump for your enjoyment, not because any of you out there are unfamiliar with it.

Awesome Slezak! Although I was always more partial to “What Time is Love” myself. I loved the White Room when it first came out. I can remember hearing an advanced copy of 3am Eternal and thinking “oooh this is going to be HUGE”.
I just realized I ‘ve dated myself yet again.

WHAT? I’m a twentysomething and I know this song. It’s too, I don’t know, perfectly early 90’s and classic not to know it~ (KLF IS GONNA ROCK YOU!)

  • DejaVu

Why do I suddenly feel the need for thigh-high boots and a stripper pole?

  • Shasta

This is what the KLF is ABOUT/Also known as the Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu/Furthermore known at the JAMS
Oh my god, I love the KLF so much. The White Room was one of the first tapes I ever bought. Thanks for bringing them up!!

I crack up every time I hear this song. Don’t know why that is. I also have fond memories of “Justified and Ancient”, another KLF joint with supporting vocals by Tammy Wynnette of all people. And she was on the video too!

I was listening to a Genius playlist this morning and Insomnia by Faithless came on. I missed the 90s after that.
Ooh… POPWATCH IDEA SLEZAK! What’s your latest GENIUS PLAYLIST? ;)

  • MIV

    KLF is gonna rock ya!
Loved this song back in the day and liked Justified and Ancient as well. I had seriously forgotten about this classically 90s hit. Was this around the same time as Snap “The Power”?? Those 2 together would send me right back to junior high.

  • Winona

Yay, thirtysomethings who recall awesomely so-bad-they’re-good songs!!!

  • Chaddogg

Wait, the beats were made by his Zack Morris-sized cell phone???? How did I NOT know THAT??
Amazing. I loved this song. I had no idea they had a video for it, though.

Whats even sadder is, one of the bonus tracks on the the new Pussycat Dolls album, is a cover of Jane Child’s “I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” & when I was talking to friends (ALL IN THEIR early 30’s) about it the other night, no one remembered the black & white video with Jane and her nose ring attached to her mountain of braids! That song along with “3 A.M. Eternal” both came out around the same time, I hope younger PCD fans that bought the deluxe version of the new cd, “Doll Domination”, with the cover by solo doll Jessica Wyatt know its a cover, it would be really sad if they didn’t.

I’ve just had a really bad day at work and took a quick break to check Pop Watch and I find this. Now I;ve been transported out of my office to Mu Mu Land to see the Queen of Country Music….I’m never gonna leave. Thank you

  • Tracey

    LMAO! Thank you for that.

  • barbara

I am 39 years old and I love me some KLF!

  • Stephanie T.

I am not sure what religion they were but KLF were awesome!

  • Erin

I am not quite 30 and I have the cassette single of KLF’s 3 A.M. Eternal. Remember when the Headbanger’s Ball was good and MTV played music? Long live the space man!

  • Johnny

Phil: I totally remember Jane Child, and full confession, I have that song on my ipod. How could anyone not remember what she looked like? It was quite the unique look wasn’t it?

  • bobby

I havent heard “Justified and Ancient” and I LOVE IT!

  • Missi

Too funny! I was decluttering not long ago and found a box of casettes in the attic. I tossed them all in the garbage (bye bye Glen Medeiras and Bel Biv Devoe). The only one I couldn’t bring myself to toss was KLF – even though I have nothing to play it on.

  • Simon

Thank you so much for this! This is good 90s music!

  • Simon

Missi, you did not throw out “Nothing’s gonna change my love for you”! Say it ain’t so!!! When I was younger, I taped it off the radio and must of had it taped 10 times in a row – how I loved that song!

  • projectionista

I vividly remember both songs from my early high school years (and I think I even have them somewhere deep within my iTunes), but until I just watched these videos again I forgot how completely surreal early-to-mid 90s top 40 music could be. Who needs today’s boring snippets of music videos with their windswept teenage pop stars trying to look alluring (for that matter, who really needs a coherent theme?!) when you can have crazy cult people in colorful robes, cell phones the size of a computer, bizarre industrial/apocalyptic/tribal/mythological imagery, and old country stars? :)

  • Semi

KLF just rock. It sounds great even today… I just listened “2K – ***k the millennium” yesterday.
Where are this kind of sounds/bands now days?! (Idols just doesn’t make things like this :) )
… Well, now I need to listen more KLF.

To Johnny and Phil: I hadn’t thought about Jane Child in years, and your comments brought it all back…that nose ring;all that hair. And that earworm of a song too, of course! Thanks for the memories, guys.
And, I hate to say this, but as soon as I saw the post, I yelled “Unbelievable!” then remembered that was EMF, not KLF. Good grief.
Now, how’s about a post about the best of the initialed or acronymed-named bands, Michael?!

  • Ep Sato

KLF did an entire album on Wax Trax Records before the 3 am hit. And trust me, it’s one of the worst recordings ever made. I could never get into “KLF is going to rock you” without evoking memories of their pathetically awful first album. It’s almost worth finding just to understand how deep they’d sunk into suckitude before making one minor hit….some 15 years ago.
Uhh, Sle? You know I love you man, but why is KLF Popwatch worthy?

  • Jim

Ah, this takes me back. Love the toaster-sized cellphone; who needs a satellite phone when your cell is already the size of a small satellite?

  • Will

Don’t forget Doctorin’ in the Tardis…by the Timeloads (aka KLF) the police car is in both videos.
