The movie and TV shooting locations near you

Northbynorthwest_lUSA Today has a fun list of which movies and TV shows have been shot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It’s a good reminder that you don’t necessarily have to live in Los Angeles or Manhattan to wake up and find a film crew shooting outside your front door. Nor do you have to live near a famous landmark, like Mount Rushmore (pictured, in North by Northwest). We’re certain that many of you have your own movie and TV-shoot sitings to report, or live near someplace that was immortalized in a movie or TV show. Here’s your chance to share with your fellow PopWatchers, so we can all plan our travel itineraries for our next location-shot tourism road trips.

I live in Lexington, Virginia, and some of the scenes from “Sommersby” (w/ Richard Gere & Jodie Foster) were shot downtown on Main Street. Also, a few years ago, a few scenes in the Tom Cruise movie “War of the Worlds” were shot not too far from here, in the Fairfield and Raphine areas. Tom Cruise stayed at the local ‘House Mountain Inn’, and Dakota Fanning did some downtown shopping here!

I live in Mars, PA. Kingpin was shot in and around here.

“Taking Woodstock,” the new Ang Lee movie, is currently shooting in a teeny tiny town in upstate New York called New Lebanon, a couple miles from the teeny tiny town where I grew up. The summer people were really excited, but now they’re gone and the locals are just pissed they keep closing the roads.

I go to the Hamptons on Long Island every summer. Movies like DEATHTRAP, SWEET LIBERTY, WALL STREET and ROCKET GIBRALTAR were filmed there.

I now live in South Carolina, so I’ll be hearing from Dawson’s Creek fans. Before my move, I lived in Atlanta so there are many shooting locations, from Good Eats to Real Housewives of Atlanta (more like Buckhead).

I’m in DC and see the famous Exorcist stairs all the time. Take the Whitehurst Freeway (it’s at the base of Georgetown) until it ends at this gas station. The stairs will be right in front of you. Even next to a gas station, those stairs are creepy. It’s 100% open to the public.
Oh yeah, and the bookstore from “national Treasure 2″ is right on the corner of 14th and F Streets NW, kitty corner from the National Press Building, where I work. It’s two blocks from the Metro Center Metro Station. If you come to DC, check it out then look me up!

Back to School fans, check out the University of Wisconsin Campus in Madison. The movie was mostly shot there.

Living in Hawaii, you can run into the crew of Lost at anytime. In fact the show has filmed at the St. Andrew’s Cathedral on the campus of my daughters’ school at least 3 times, the latest was last week. Also, when I was in high school we always went to the “From Here to Eternity” beach. It’s a great little cove that you have to hike down to.

I’m aiming for really, really obscure here. My childhood hometown was the filming location for “Children of the Corn III” and “Killers Three”. (The second movie is from the 60s, really, really bad and Dick Clark was one of the stars.) It was sheer hilarity to have those movies filmed there. The town had to come out and watch.

I live in Southern New Mexico where parts of Transformers was filmed and Transformers 2 is currently being filmed; as well as parts of the most recent Indiana Jones film… New Mexico in general has become a great place to film movies (Wild Hogs, Employee of the Month, Swing Vote, Transformers, Transformers 2, Indiana Jones, Young Guns, and many more that I can’t remember)

My university, the University of Guelph, doubles as the campus for Charles University in “The Best Years”. They just finished filming more outdoors shots here last week.

The Shawshank Redemption was filmed in my hometown – Shawshank itself is actually the old Mansfield Reformatory in Ohio, and a lot of scenes in the movie used the city of Mansfield and a nearby state park as well. The Russian prison scenes in Air Force One were filmed at the same prison. It’s a fun place to tour…

I live in Lyndhurst, NJ. The Sopranos used to shoot on my street all the time.

  • Winona

I’ve been to FitzGerald’s in Berwyn, IL many times (even sung on stage a couple times), and I always think of Adventures in Babysitting when I’m in there. It’s a great venue.

Long Island, on the Meadowbrook Pkwy, the tollbooths on the way to Jones Beach is where Sonny Corleone got massacred. It looks different now, but it’s the same spot for sure.
