Emmy ratings down from last year

Categories: Reality TV, Television

Heidivsandy_lApparently adding more hosts to the Emmys does not add more viewers. This year’s telecast, presided over by Ryan Seacrest, Heidi Klum (pictured, left), Tom Bergeron, Howie Mandel, and Jeff Probst, only managed to reach 12.2 million viewers, down 6% from last year’s 13 million. Not helping the snooze fest elegant awards program was competition from NBC’s Sunday Night Football, which scored a solid 16 million viewers.

ABC didn’t have much luck earlier in the evening either, with Jimmy Kimmel’s Big Night of Stars. The funnyman’s special only saw a paltry 4.7 million viewers; Stars actually had less viewers in its first half hour (4.6) than a rerun of American Dad on Fox (4.7 mil). But Kimmel’s main opponent was the old fogies at 60 Minutes who dominated the 7-8pm hour with 17.2 million viewers. Maybe Andy Rooney (pictured, right) should host next year’s Emmys?

60 Minutes was a good one last night. One-on-one interviews with both McCain and Obama. That’s what I was watching instead of Kimmel, although Barak’s interview cut into the beginning of the Emmys.

I’m trying to forgot this show ever happened. Please hurry and remove the linked stories from the EW homepage.

I don’t know about everybody else, but I was a lot more interested in the final game at the legendary Yankee Stadium!

I think overall people are less concerned and satisfied with the self congratulatory award shows than they usually were. Be it that we’re overexposed and oversaturated with celebrity as it is, we can’t seem to care about them dressing up and getting awards. The only awards shows that I watch typically are shows that have a musical act or acts (i.e Grammys, VMAs, etc) for the live performances. But to watch an actor rush through a speech thanking god, their mother, their agent, blah blah blah, I’d rather not. I’d rather watch Season 5 of Buffy (which should’ve won an Emmy that year).

60 Minutes interviewed the main 2 presidential candidates, and I actually learned something watching it…Jimmy Kimmel, not so much. And Andy Rooney wasn’t even on this week.

Do you really think the general public are interested in watching subjective awards be handed out for television shows no one watches. I don’t think so!

The Cowboys and Green Bay were playing also. Sports was the winner, what with Sunday Night Football and the game at Yankee Stadium.

I usually love award shows, especially the red carpet show. But for some reason, I couldn’t care less that the Emmys were on. Just came on this website to see who won and who wore what.

The big night of stars WAS a pretty funny take-off of the Barbara Walters specials, the Obama McCain bits on 60 Minutes were incisive but for sheer drama the Yankee Stadium sendoff had it all.

I think many awards shows have grown stale. Last year’s Emmys were awful when Ryan hosted, so people probably didn’t have much faith when they added reality hosts. I didn’t & I was right. They need to freshen things up a bit & for the love, get a good host next year.

I flipped between the Cowboys and Family Guy (Blue Harvest, their homage to Star Wars)…I had no interest in watching Kimmel or his stars…you know, i think in this day and age of online gossip sites and late night talk shows, we get all the celebs we wanna see w/out seeing them even more on these ’specials’…and it seems there is an overload of awards shows, so I think people are pretty sick and tired of them…especially when they deliver such boring fare for us…

I couldn’t have imagined saying this five years ago, but I’ve had it with celebrities. When did they get soooo dull? I love movies and TV but the actors themselves have gotten blah. That’s why I couldn’t watch this year. I can’t bring myself to care about how they look or think. Possibly other people are bored with them too and this is reflected in the consistently dropping numbers.

I could not believe that Josh Groban agreed to sing a montage of television theme songs. You could tell by the look on his face that he was very uncomfortable on stage.

Stars are everywhere now – it used to be fun to see them dressed up, but not really anymore. Also, I didn’t know who half of those people were, while some of the lesser known shows may be good most of us don’t watch them and therefore, don’t care about who wins the awards. I didn’t even consider watching this year and usually I love those shows.
