When did Celine stop pounding her chest? :(

Celinedionmsg_l1Last night, I bought a last-minute ticket to see Celine Dion at Madison Square Garden with my friend Robb, his friend Louis, and Louis’ boyfriend Jorge. (This sounds like a Kathy Griffin bit…) I took notes:

• Robb: "I don’t believe I’m here." [Note his IM from earlier in the day: "There will be moments tonight when we're all scarred from embarrassment. But have you ever seen her live? You will be amazed at the voice. It's perfect."]
• Opens with "I Drove All Night." Standing on the piano in the first song! She has great legs…
• Me: "I just got chills. Goddamn it." Robb: "Write that down."
• Robb turns to give me a knowing nod as she holds the last note of "The Power of Love."
• Ten years since she’s played the Garden. Feels priviledged to still be singing for us. Has her 81-year-old mother and 7.5-year-old son on tour. Thanks us again on behalf of everyone onstage. Robb: "It’s genuine." I agree.
• New song "Taking Chances." "It’s All Coming Back to Me Now" [Squeal!] "Because You Loved Me." [Boo.] People like that song?
• "To Love You More." Still no chest-pounding. Four kids pulled from our section because they’ve been standing and doing interpretive dance during every song. Robb hopes they get better seats so they can act crazy right in front of Celine. "She’d love them."
"Eyes on Me." New song. Like it. And the black thigh-high boots.
• "All By Myself."  Robb nudges my leg as if to tell me to "get ready." One light chest slap, but definitely not a pound. When is she going to pound? Goes a cappella for the big note at the end. Falls to her knees and leans back with her arms over her head. [Note that this is starred, twice, in my notebook. It was such an amazing/awesomely bad sight that I got tears in my eyes. I also started thinking that maybe people who diss Celine are secretly afraid that they would do the exact same moves if they had her voice and those dramatic ballads.]

"I’m Alive." She’s wearing bell bottoms? New song "Shadow of Love." Pretends to shoot gun and put it in holster. New song "Fade Away." Robb is right: This sounds like a Kelly Clarkson song. "I’m Your Angel." Robb: "Her R. Kelly duet. Obviously recorded before he was seen peeing on someone. ALLEGEDLY."
She just did a leg kick during "Alone." Kisses her thumb then gives us a thumbs-up.
New song "My Love," written by Linda Perry. Some people know how to write a song, Celine says, and some people know how to see into your soul.
"The Prayer" with a videotaped Andrea Boccelli. Robb: "They clapped for the video." Funny that she didn’t have a videotaped R. Kelly.
• French song: "Pour Que Tu M’aimes Encore." The biggest selling French song in history, according to Robb, who’s singing along. Didn’t he study in Spain in college? Robb: "I don’t speak French; I learned it phonetically."
"We Will Rock You." A Queen tribute. "The Show Must Go On." Twirling the tassles on her bedazzled vest. On her knees again. Robb: "Jorge’s crying."
The soul medley Robb warned me about. Leads into "It’s a Man’s World." One of her white, strappy thigh-high boots is falling down. Does she know? "Love Can Move Mountains."
• Encore: "River Deep, Mountain High." People applaud when she twirls a portion of mic stand like a baton. How hard is that? Another chest slap. But still.no.pounding.
• Second encore: "My Heart Will Go On." Raised podium, naturally. Descends to walk the perimeter of the stage. Train of gown blowing = nice touch.

P.S.: As we left the concert, Louis and Jorge argued over whether Jorge had actually cried. (He denies it.) When we got to the street and started critiquing Celine’s costumes, Jorge said her Titanic gown was his least favorite: He doesn’t like short-in-front, long-in-back, even for the purpose of flow. A woman walking in front of us actually turned around to say, "No. That was my favorite."

How does this compare to your Celine experience?

I remember her doing the chest pound, in its prime, during an awards show of some sort (Oscars?), singing “My Heart Will Go On,” wearing the Heart of the Ocean (or, at least, a close replica from Claire’s/Icing). My heart almost didn’t go on when I thought she broke the thing with her judo gesture.
I can deal with her not chest pounding (maybe the doctors told her to only do that when experiencing tightness), but the one Celine-ism I absolutely CANNOT live with out is below:

    LuuuRRRvve!

    The pounding became de-mode. Sadness.

Note to everyone and anyone: If you ever go to a movie, concert, bar or any other event with Mandi, watch every single word you say, or else you’ll be part of her blog.

Uhm. Lets see. Because It got old like “OH MY G-D! THEY KILLED KENNY! YOU BAST-ARDS!” Or she finally realized that she is not female Tarzan.

Just an obversation: why do people *** out cuss words b/c they are being sensitive/courteous to the people who prefer not to hear/read such words (and I admit, I am one of those-and I very much appreciate your courtesy), but they leave in comments like Mandi’s ‘g-dd-mn?’, which, at least to some (i.e, christians-of which, yes, I am one too), is the ‘worst’/most offensive word of all? Just an observation/thought for you (though I’ve noticed EW the mag does the same thing)…

I saw Celine in New Jersey (I know.) and it was MAGICAL. My friends and I like to get drunk and sing “All Coming Back to Me” and when I heard the first notes of that song I literally collapsed into my chair and started weeping. WEEPING. Two minutes later an usher comes to us with a stack of tickets in his hand and moves us from the very last row (okay, we had moved there from the eighth-to-last row because our singing and crazy dancing was getting us murderous looks) to the NINTH ROW. I almost died. During the whole show, though, Celine was totally favoring the other side of the stadium. She even left at the end of the show on that side. This prompted me to scream “CELIIIIINE!!! WHY DID YOU FAVOR THAT SIDE OF THE STADIUMMMMM!?” in her Quebecoise accent. When she didn’t turn our way, I resorted to just yelling “RENE CHARLESSSSSS” over and over. Surprisingly, the audience around me laughed instead of stabbing me in the neck. Best concert ever.

Sounds about right. We saw her in Las Vegas, and she’s so cheesy and so sincere and so talented! Love her.

I believe that Celiene is one of the last “great singer” we have from the past couple of decades. It used to be Whitney (she is on crack now), Mariah (she doesn’t even really sing like she used to, just “speak sings”), and Celiene. Celiene still rocks it out after all these years and I have to admit her voice brings me to tears.

Bill it’s because I would have typed in the “B” word but I had a feeling that EW would have censored me even if it was a catch phrase.

Oh, how I love Celine’s over-the-top theatrics! As goofy and cheesy she can be, she does seem to be very sincere and, I guess when you’ve got a voice like that, you can get away with crazy leg kicks and pretending to shoot guns. Being a long-time Celine fan, I am always happy when her talents are recognized, even in the midst of all her nonsensical mannerisms. That song-by-song commentary is fantastic!

Love Celine. Saw her in vegas (AWESOME) – sad to see the chest pound has gone away :(
And that damn “Taking Chances” has grown on me, plus the video is the most crazy/ridiculous/amazing one of all Celine videos. Which is saying A LOT.

  • wakeforce

Celine is much like Cher or Bette- To truly experience her you must see her live. she is the kind of performer older ladies and gay men can appreciate which is why she’ll continue to sell out arenas even if her radio considers her obsolete

  • John

I think Celine is amazing live! Medias love to make fun of her but nobody can sing like she does. She might be a little goofy at times, but at least she’s not faking it like Madonna or Mariah. She’s the real thing and she’s got a great sense of humor. Celine Live = Ultimate Experience with the Bond Girl!

Stephanie-sorry if i gave the wrong impression. I wasn’t referencing your remarks-no harm, no foul. I have noticed this happening alot in places (this post by Mandi for EW being one example) and just wanted to comment on how EW let ‘g-dd-mn’ be uncensored on the blog (and in their magazine, as do many other sites/mags), which again, some find the most offensive term that could be used, but *** other words. Didn’t mean for it to look like I was referencing you specifically-sorry ’bout that. It was a comment/observation for EW. Peace…

  • Sam

The best live performer ever, she’s inspirational and amazing. Couldn’t believe it when she actually sounded BETTER live than on the CD! She has the wow factor and is absolutely gorgeous
