Michael Douglas as Liberace?

Liberacedouglas_lLiberace (left) was so popular for such a long time that it’s weird to think he exists now only as a pop-cultural punchline. (See the scene in 2005’s Good Night, and Good Luck, where we’re supposed to snicker at Edward R. Murrow’s softball interview with the pianist, who suggests that he hasn’t settled down yet because he hasn’t found the right girl.) Maybe Steven Soderbergh’s planned Liberace biopic will remedy that. I’m not sure about the casting, though: he wants Michael Douglas (right) as Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott Thorson, who famously sued the entertainer for palimony. Not sure whether the whole idea is fabulous or tragic, so I’ll let you decide, PopWatchers.

Douglas has done some fantastic stuff, but as Liberace? That’s almost to weird to wrap my head around.

I think he could do it. Michael Douglas is an excellent actor who seems to be picking work for artistic purposes and I think this will give him the work he’s been searching for.

Douglas could pull it off if he doesn’t get cartoonish with the portrayal. But Damon is wrong for Thorson. Maybe someone pretty in need of some serious acting cred like Paul Walker would be better.

I think Michael Douglas is capable. He has the acting chops. Matt Damon might surprise us as Scott Thorson. It could be a revelatory movie.
As for the Iggy Pop biopic that was SUPPOSED to be released this summer, I’m disappointed. I was looking forward to two hours of Elijah Wood shirtless (not going for the acting, plot, etc)

Wasn’t this done already as a made for TV movie starring Victor (Spy Daddy) Garber? (Pre Alias and Titanic)

Casting Michael Douglas as Liberace might be just creepy enough. I can’t really see it, so I might have to actually go see it. So – brilliant casting, actually! Matt Damon as Scott Thorsen – that sounds interesting but do you think Matt should be second-billed, anywhere, now?

Back in th late eighties, actor Victor Garber portrayed Liberace in a television mini-series about his life. If you ask me he comes close (not exactly, but close) to looking like Liberace so I’d say let him play Lib again.

Michael Douglas does look disturbingly like Liberace. Here’s another question–who to play him as a young man when he was growing up in Milwaukee? Jason Swartzman perhaps?

  • Lillian Gorham

What is so strange is how Catherine is starting to look just as elderly as Michael!! I have heard rumours for many years that she is actually 12 years older than her given age. Apparently, in the UK, it is no secret.

Give it to me to try for free and if it works, your company will make so much from my word of mouth. Otherwise, i don’t believe a word of what is being said. Now let’s see if you keep this comment on your board.

More heterosexual actors playing gay people. It’s a desperate attempt to win critical acclaim and shows Hollywood’s anti-gay bigotry/ heterosexual supremacist view. There are ZERO major actors that are openly gay. Every major actor from the beginning of Hollywood to the present have been heterosexual or marketed as heterosexual. It’s done to fulfill the heterosexual supremacist worldview; heterosexual is everything good, homosexual is everything bad. If a gay person came out their career would plummet because of heterosexuals’ intense bigotry toward gay people and agents unwillingness to market a gay celebrity.
There is a LONG history of oppression by heterosexuals inflicted upon gay people. For that reason alone having a heterosexual play a gay person is offensive. Heterosexuals believe they are the judge of everything because they believe they are better than anyone who is not heterosexual and even others that are heterosexual. They obviously are not either.

Wow! That sure got your panties in a wad! Are you out or closeted?

I’ve always een a big Douglas fan, including the old man Kirt. Any movie with Michael in, I would go to the movie to see. To see Michael Douglas play the role of Liberace is a no-no and I will not waste my money or time. I hope Michael consider his fan base before playing this role.

Yes Victor Garber did Liberace and did add animation to Madam Tassaud’s wax dummy of him….I already see Mike/Lee recall the child prodigy playing Chopin’s Etude in G Major. I laugh seeing the Mike/Lee duet with Jack Benny. I shed a tear over Mike/Lees puppet-Pagliacci & send in the clowns performance. Most of all I celebrate Mike/Lee playing Chopin’s Fantasie Impromptu evoking Mike/Lee’s life long quest of endless giftgiving. I dont know what Mike will do with these my suggestions but I know that he will bring Liberace and his legacy to life cinematically.
