In Defense of Rihanna's VMA outfit

Rihanna_lI love Rihanna.  I love her fashion sense.  I even loved the loony ensemble she wore for her "Disturbia" performance at last night’s VMAs and I don’t really understand all the criticism she’s getting for it. It’s not like she wore this outfit to accept the Nobel Prize; she wore it during a performance at an awards show where spectacle is everything. And it was a themed performance. She was supposed to be scary! The song ain’t called "Adorablia." She looked like a sweet girl who, clearly from the tattered ballerina-esque train in the back, was attacked by the people of Disturbia. Or was she their queen?  Oh well. It’s okay, Rihanna.  I understood what you were trying to go for. And that’s really all that matters.

At least you didn’t decide to show up channeling Linda Hogan as Christina Aguilera seemingly did.

What kills me is that her outfit (or her performance) wasn’t any better than Britney’s last year, yet we were allowed to crap all over Britney. God forbid we take down Rihanna. Who’s half as talented and has about a quarter the staying power.

First off, let me say that I do not like Rihanna. I’ve never heard a song by her that didn’t make me cringe. That being said, “Disturbia” is the first song by her that I find tolerable & honestly I didn’t see anything wrong with her ensemble. I’ve certainly seen worse, especially on the VMA’s.

  • Snarf

Gotta say – she knows how to make an enterence.

  • bootsycolumbia

God, what an fugly outfit!!! Those boots are hideous! But so what–it’s the VMAs. Who cares? Aren’t the performers supposed to dress like that?

  • Melanie

I didnt see her first performance, but I really have thougth for some time that rhirhi is more looks than talent or even stage presence. The peformace with TI proved that because after the great pose to begin it all, she looked awkward the entire time.
The outfit however is ok, as its supposed to be dramatic.
Ms. Aguilera on the other hand looked like a weird combo of Paula Abdul’s wacky perfomance VMA outfit & that mom & walmart thats wearing the too-tight jeans

They were tights you retard not jeans.GOOSH YOU GUYS ARE RERARDED?As my friend napolean would say

There’s nothing wrong with Rihanna’s outfit. Fits the song and the video.
But Xtina…don’t diss her. She freaking rocked.

Rihanna’s outfit was hot. Quite hot, it fits her body like a leather glove-BUT-her voice not so much. Rihanna always has sort of a nasaly tone to her singing, even though her voice is strong. You can hear that and her voice cracking during her performance at the VMAs, overall: her voice couldn’t match her rock’n outfit. :(

  • Diamond

Rihanna may-not be the best singer but her performance was REALLY GOOD! That’s what counts anyway, if you can’t deliver a performance then you might as well just walk off.. But Mrs. Rihanna did a good job! Even when she was on stage with T.I. (The best song/perfomance throughout the whole show) was VERY GOOD!!!

I have absolutly no idea what people are talking about in concerns to Rhianna or Britney talent. Neither have much. Britney can’t sing and I don’t care about dancing and Rhianna is smoke and mirrors… Pretty girl pretty clothes, no talent. Why O Why won’t the world just let go of its obession with Britney so we can focus some media attention on singers whom actually sing?

  • ARE YOU SERIOUS????

OMG!! She looked like an idiot in the opening act. What a terrible performance on her part. She looked like a wanna-be chris brown thriller remake. She needs to face the fact that she is not as talented as her beau. And I have to mention WHAT THE HELL WAS UP WITH THE MULLET???? Are you serious? What a weirdo i can’t believe she walked out with that fake ass crap glued to her head. How riDICKulous! Thank god she redeemed her self with the 2nd performance because the 1st was a terrible. It was so bad I am surprised it didn’t get as much coverage. Everybody is still talking about Britney……

wow…why is everyone so harsh? thank goodness someone finally noticed how awesome rihanna’s outfit was.
christina was lip synching! at least we know rihanna isn’t faking it.
obviously you rihanna haters dont follow fashion.

  • I Adore Rihanna

All of you are DUMB. all u ppl talkin trach about Rihanna are wacked out. You think she really give a rats ass if u like her Disturbia outfit, or her nasel’d voice or if u like her being with Chris Brown?! helll to the NO! she doesnt give a &*(^ she doesnt even kno yall. She has more money than you.. she certainly has more money than you mom and dad and whole family tree combined.. so stop talkin trash… chris brown loved her performance (He was seeing along) and he loves being with her obviously.. so stop HATIN.. yall will never EVER have him or Have her FAMe, soo like really wtf is all thw HOopla about. Remember Rihanna is soo BIG because she has Fans… its ppl like (the above) who keep her going… jus to prove yall wrong =)

  • Staci

What brand is TI’s white jacket?

  • bruno

ohmygod…aguliera was TOTALLY chanelling linda hogan.

  • Springbreak

Rihanna’s VMA outfit = FUGLY! Nuff said!

  • suzette

Rihanna was on point! Both performances rocked and there’s no criticism here. That performace with TI solidified her rockstar status and clearly it struck a note with the hateration out there otherwise you wouldn’t be commenting. She’s unique and doesn’t have the same R&B modus operandi and that’s why I respect her game. BIg up RIH RiH.

  • Jeta

I saw her both performances and they were the best perfomances ever…Rihanna always looks perfect♥

  • PeterBilt The Nature Boy

She used to be gorgeous on her first two albums, then she cut her hair and now she looks like the alien from ‘Mac and Me’.

  • Djole

Rihanna je najbolja, i uvek ce biti!!! Rihanna rocks, and she always will!!! Live your life, ain’t got no time for them haters!!!!

  • Silv

Rihanna looked gorgeous. Her performance was an extension of the video. It’s all for the show, for pete’s sake, not like she goes around looking like that every day.

  • Michael

I turned the VMAs off after seeing Rihanna. Can we please stop the homage to MJs Thriller? Except for her singing that who bit was terrible.

  • Christopher Kalie

Rihanna had less energy than Britney did last year! For the opening act it was an incredible let down. She even proved that she has no rhythm during her 2nd performance.
Overall the VMAs sunk to a new low – can’t believe it was supposed to be a 25th anniversary celebration! where were all the big hitters this year???

  • jarhead

rihanna sucks very very bad singer cant sing and dance bad performance she will be forgotten over a few years

  • lynx765

im not upset at the outfit, because that was the look she was going for…but vocally her performance was a letdown…collectively w/ the dancers and everything it didn’t fit the bill…

  • wendy

Didn’t mind the outfit but she did look like a horse with the hair and tail and all.

  • Cocoa Queen

Get a grip people. Her outfit was very theatrical and if you saw the video an obvious extension. No she isn’t the best vocalist…but on the whole the entire show was kinda blah. The could’ve put Christina Aguilera’s performance at the beginning because it was interesting.

  • Winona

Only Rihanna could’ve gotten away with that outfit. And for the record, I thought Xtina was pulling a Donatella Versace, not Linda Hogan.

  • just a thought

Rihanna is pretty, sings fine, her zombie looking dancers were cool..but I thought the white clump of fabric hanging from her backside looked out of place. She should have ripped that part off and went with her basic outfit. But in the end it’s just another award show, another weird outfit…gotta love it.
