Happy birthday, David Rasche!

Was Sledge Hammer! a completely asinine, sophomoric sitcom? Yes!

Did I LOL while perusing classic clips (one embedded below, and three more after the jump) from the mid-’80s show on YouTube this morning? Affirmative!

Would I probably add the stilted series about a violence-loving cop to my DVR schedule if, say, ABC brought it back as a midseason replacement come 2009? You betcha! (And not just because its star, David Rasche, turns 64 today.)

So let’s cut to the chase: Anyone else with me on the "Bring Back Sledge Hammer!" movement? (I hear the crickets, people, and they tell me you’re not being truthful!)

Slezak, you’re my hero. Sledgehammer is up there in the pantheon of shows FAR before their time….bringing it back as a mid-season replacement? My DVR would have a standing order to record every episode….
Too bad you didn’t embed the opening title sequence — the song was fantastic.

I remember that show. It was really funny. It’s one of those shows that should be on DVD.

I totally agree with Stephanie. While I’m not necessarily convinced that a redo would work, but definitely bring back the original on DVD or late night. Second thoughts: Why is it that I rarely hear of American networks rerunning good shows? If the German equivalent of ABC can air Tatort reruns from the 70ies in the 8PM timeslot on Fridays, why can’t Fox rerun Firefly, or Whateverstationitwas Hammer!?

So, Slezak… This is totally off topic. But, last night I went to see the AI tour and was so psyched when during intermission we were treated to none other than Corey the Warm Up Comic! And, he was totally burned by a 5 year old who hid on the floor rather than talk to him. I want to thank you and your fellow EW! bloggers for bringing this important character from Hollywood to my attention. lol

Sledgehammer is too Classic. Both seasons are available on DVD. I got mine at Target. I’m sure Amazon would have them also. “Trust Me, I know what I’m doing”.

I loved that show!!! I still remember my favorite Sledge Hammer quote, from when he had to go undercover as a hairdresser — “I’m a nihilist, not a stylist”. Classic!

One of my favorite shows…just watched both seasons on DVD. What a great character.

Oh Dear! I flippin’ loved Sledge Hammer. so many laughs. The show that couldn’t be killed. Jericho and Family Guy have nothing on the Sledge. The ultimate TV resurrection/comeback. The great memories from my childhood. My mom watched too many of the hour long crime shows back then but the ones that stick out most were Simon & Simon, Father Dowling Mysteries, Jake & the Fatman, and of course Sledge Hammer! I’d totally watch it again on tv, but not remade. Original. Glorious.

Sledge was the best. Bring it back, tell me where to sign!

  • Dinosaur

Yup … that show was aces.

  • RedAngel

Yes! I love this show, and am a proud “Hammerhead”! It had me at the I Heart Violence bumper sticker.

I threw a tantrum in the back of my parents’ car because the dinner party they were dragging me to would make me miss an episode.
New Sledge: Craig Ferguson (he can be half Scottish or something)

  • Jay

I LOVE HAMMER!!! Especially the episode where captain is telling his boss how they finally will be able to put away a mob guy cause he left his fingerprints on a powdered donut. Hammer comes in sees a half eaten donut and helps himself to it. TWICE!!! “Trust me, I know what I’m doing.” I miss Sledge Hammer!

You’ll get my Sledge Hammer! DVDs when you pry them from my cold dead hands. And I still have my tapes, each episode lovingly recorded when it originally aired. Note: Never before or since have I managed to archive a series in so orderly a fashion. That’s how I know it was true love.

  • Tuzo

Slezak, I trust you — you know what you’re doing! You are on a roll today! First Lita Ford and now David Rasche. It’s like the 80’s never went away. Now, I have to go find my parachute pants. :O

  • Will

I’m still waiting on the announcement of Sledge Hammer – The Movie!

  • Mr. Deeds

David Rasche and Allen Spencer were geniuses together. I wish they’d do something new.

  • david
