Hi. I’m barely alive today. This whole summer, actually. THE HEAT. I can’t take it. I want to crawl in a hole and come out on September 22nd. But this isn’t interesting. iPod Inspections are! Time to put your entire library on shuffle, then list the first five songs that speak to you in any way re: The Dead of Summer. Bonus points if the titles don’t contain the word "sun" — 43 of my songs do, for the record. Your choices will still be a lot sunnier than mine:
Killing Me Softly — The Fugees (pictured)
Help! — The Beatles
Evil — Ladytron
Makes Me Wanna Die — Tricky
Time Stands Still — Cut Copy
And a bonus: "Rhythm of the Night," by Corona, because something supremely boppy has to snap me outta this funk; plus, Corona is both part of the sun and what should be pumping through one’s veins in a steady drip throughout this entire, horrible, no good very bad month. Happy August, y’all!

I Know – Fiona Apple
Gave Up – Nine Inch Nails
There’s Always Someone Cooler Than You – Ben Folds

1. Ice Cream – Sarah McLachlan (as Homer says, “mmmmm, ice cream….”)
2. Killer Queen – Queen (made me think of killer bees – like the one that dive-bombed my head yesterday morning as I was walking the dog)
3. I Hope – Dixie Chicks (for a breeze, a swimming pool, a heat index under 90….)
4. Contact – Rent (as in “don’t touch me, it’s too hot for contact!”)
5. Let it Rain – Jo Jo (self-explanatory, no?)
God bless air conditioning!
Ticks- Brad Paisley (been picking them off all summer)
Time Is On My Side- Rolling Stones (actually the opposite is true during the summer_
The Irish Drinkin’ Song- Da Vinci’s Notebook (just want to sit at an Irish pub and have a few pints in the heat of the day)
Gin & Juice- Phish (pretty cool cover)
Old Man- Neil Young (summer reminds me that I am another year older)
i’ve lived in atlanta for the past 12 years, where the weathercasters regularly describe local conditions with “the three H’s” in reference to the bane of summer weather: hazy, hot, and humid.
1. “‘Cause the Beat’s Hot” – Board Bangers (yeah, not so much, but the temp sure is)
2. “Da Dip” – Freak Nasty (to the pool!)
3. “What’s a Girl to Do” – Bat for Lashes (drink cold beverages and stay indoors)
4. “Go to Mexico” – Cassandra Wilson (¡qué calor!)
5. “Harder to Breathe” – Maroon 5 (thanks, poor air quality!)
Honorable Mention: “Rise” – Herb Alpert (which invariably reminds me of the “WKRP” ep when Herb’s ladyfriend reveals she used to be a man)

Work in Progress — Mary J. Blige
Speachless — Beyonce
Dumb it Down — Lupe Fiasco
Simple Things — Usher
Oops (Oh my) — Tweet

“Under the Sea” – Little Mermaid Soundtrack (shut up)

2.”Drive My Car” The Beatles
3.”Because” The Beatles (LOVE remix)

Don Henley ” The Boys Of Summer” ( well, it’s summery)
Aimee Mann ” Save Me” ( now!)
Midnight Oil ” Beds Are Burning” ( it was 95 F in my bedroom last night- and I live in CANADA with no air conditioning. I thought I was going to die.)
Big Star ” September Gurls” 9 my daughters are going back to school soon, and that means nicer, autumn weather)
Frank Sinatra ” Come Rain or Come Shine” ( no matter what, there is always time for Frank).
“Hot Dogs and Hamburgers” — John Mellencamp (that’s all I feel like eating these days …)
“Getaway” — Train
“Mercy” — Duffy
“Uncle Albert” — Paul McCartney & Wings
“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” — Otis Redding — the ultimate summer song

All Alright – Sigur Ros
Let’s Dance – David Bowie
Must Be Dreaming – Frou Frou
Nothing In My Way – Keane
On the Verge of Something Wonderful – Darren Hayes
It’s actually a comfy 66 degrees here by the San Francisco bay, with a high of 74 today, going all the way up to 78 tomorrow. Which is why most of my summer feelings have to do with being annoyed that I’m stuck at work rather than outside enjoying it. (Also, one from the “Barcelona Gold” album, because I can’t wait for the Olympics to start.)
James Blunt: “Out of My Mind”
Lisa Stansfield: “All Around the World”
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince: “Higher Baby”

David Tomlinson and Dick Van Dyke: “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”
