'Flight of the Conchords' gets some Emmy love!

Categories: Emmys, Music, Television

So yeah, a bunch of super-worthy shows got dissed by the Emmy nominations today. (I guess we Friday Night Lights fans should be used to the world inexplicably ignoring the best drama on TV by now.) But here’s some news that cheered me up immensely (h/t): HBO’s Flight of the Conchords was rewarded with not one, but two Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics nods! Honestly, if it were up to me those kooky Kiwis would take all five spots in the category, but I can’t complain when the Emmy deities recognized my absolute favorite Conchords tune, "Inner City Pressure," along with "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)." Since the "Inner City Pressure" clip is now firmly lodged in my brain once again, I’ll use this occasion as an excuse to post it:

Aw, man. "Countin’ coins on the counter of the 7-Eleven  / From a quarter past six to a quarter to seven / The manager, Bevin, starts to abuse me / Hey, man, I just want some Muesli!" Such pathos. (The full version from the Conchords’ CD is even better.) Anyone else feeling this? Or would you have nominated another song(s) from the HBO show (or some other series) instead?

FOTC FTW! Love all their songs and would have loved for them to have gotten noms in the writing, directing, and acting categories as well. Can’t wait for the new season. If I could have added three more for the full five song nominess, I’d pick “I’m Not Crying,” “Sellotape,” and “If You’re Into It.”

I liked the first ep of FotC but when they did “Inner City Pressure” in the second ep, I fell completely in love with the show. Can’t wait for season 2!

Oh this is tough, there are so many great songs on that show. I personally love “Foux De Fafa”, “Bret, You Got It Going On”, and “If That’s What You’re Into”.

  • Babs

Sweet. I dreamt about the Conchords last night, so I must be psychic! Nice to see them get some recognition. I’m more partial to “Beautiful Girl” but it’s all good.

  • mags

Turns out the Conchords did get noms in other categories after all: directing for “Sally Returns” and writing for “Yoko.” Yes!

“Its Business Time” is my favorite song from FOTC

  • kits

The French song is so hilariously random! Parlez vou francias? Uhhh. No.

  • Chip

I love FOC…. my favorite song is, “Its Business Time”…. “that’s why they’re called business socks”…”2 minutes in heaven is better than 1 minute in heaven”… these guys are the satorical kings of music….awesome!

  • robyn

I love the nominated songs, but I would complete the five song sweep with Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros, Business Time and Leggy Blonde. The whole cd is great though. Wish they would have gotten the nom for best comedy. Can’t wait for season 2!

I go with the ‘all five’ idea. There’s nothing like them, so why not embrace it while it’s here!” They have about 30 great songs, so it’s difficult to narrow it down.

  • Mel

I am thrilled that they were nominated, but I’ve always been partial to “Ladies of the World” and “Boom”. They’re all gems! And the album is great for road trips!

  • AA

Will they perform on the Emmy broadcast?

  • tikitamra

Let’s start a petition to make sure they perform live on the emmy show!!!

  • Geo

My eyes are just a little sweaty today that FOC didn’t receive more nominations. But I’m not cryyyyy-ing. I’m just cutting onions because I’m making lasagna…for one!

  • BrandonK

Oh my god, Simon and I just agreed on something entertainment-related! What’s next? Flying pigs? Low temperatures in Hell? George Bush admitting a mistake?

  • fussbucket

Both song choices were great. I would have round out the 5 with Business Time, Bret You’ve Got it Going On, and Robots / The Distant Future! OOh wait, also If You’re Into It. And Leggy Blonde. OK, fine. All of them were worthy :P

  • Suzan

How about “A Kiss is not a Contract”: “They call it a fly because it takes you up to heaven”. One of the best lines of the year.

  • Kristina

I’m excited Flight of the Conchords was nominated! Both songs are hilarious but my favorite is Business Time. And although I’m happy they got nominated, where’s the love for Big Love?

  • Alyssa

“Inner City Pressure” is one of my least favorites. “Business Time” or “Ladies of the World” are much better, I think. But yay for getting nominated nonetheless!

  • mrehula

I usually agree with EW, but I don’t get the fascination with Friday Night Lights. It’s a decent soap opera, but the acting and the writing are not that good.
Conchords, on the other hand, does deserve every good word that’s been written. I’ve been listening to their CD every day for weeks. The music holds up great.

  • Sara

Yes! Inner City Pressure has, after many, many times repeating the CD, become my favorite FOTC song and video. But I can’t believe no one mentioned mutha’uckers–also a classic!

  • Carli

I like “If You’re Into It” and “Business Time”.

  • Vlada

I’m waiting for them to incorporate “Jenny” into the show. I fear it may be too long and storylike.

  • Kate

I just ordered a cool Flight of the Conchords shirt from http://www.PantherTees.com. They said not to tell anyone, but here is a 10% discount code, pts10 (it is case sensitive, so copy and paste it). Enjoy!

    @mags
Wait…why was “Yoko” nominated for Best Writing? I’ve always considered it to be one of their weaker episodes. I would have gone with “Drive-By” or “What Goes On Tour”, myself.
Also, “Foux du Fa Fa” and “Robots” FTW.

  • mags

I’m just speculating, but maybe “Yoko” got the nom because Jemaine’s obliviousness to Bret’s need to be alone with Coco (he just shows up in the middle of “If You’re Into It” and cheerfully sings along) is so funny, and Jemaine’s jealousy of their relationship leads to some great moments (the “She-Wolf” song, and the “Oh no? Ono?”). We also get Bret’s long-windedness in his love song (“I’d climb the highest mountain . . . I’d solve the hardest puzzle . . . “) and in his good-bye letter to Jemaine. Plus, “Sellotape” leads to a great sing-along at the end. I loved “Drive By,” too, esp. the “flipping the bird” practice scene! “What Goes On Tour” seemed kind of predictable to me (the television out the window), but still lots of fun (poor Murray in the bathtub!).

  • Alex

Love these guys. My favorite FOTC songs though are “Boom!” (why is this not so popular?) “Robots/The Distant Future”, “If That’s What You’re Into” and “Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros”. I would’ve thought that last one would get a nom.

  • pandoranz
