Scream 4 is an apparent go, eight years after the last installment hit theaters. The news was buried in reports about Showtime’s new deal to be the home of the Weinstein Co.’s and Dimension Films’ pay-cable premieres. I haven’t read any details about the movie — it’s not even listed on IMDB yet, so you know it’s in the early stages — but I’m already wondering if I’ll see it. I’ve stopped doing horror (I like to sleep at night), but I could be talked into it. I saw the first three films, during daylight hours, and I’m a sucker for a self-referential script. What about you?
P.S. I wonder what Stephen King thinks about the idea: Can the Scream series still be scary?

I can’t even look at that still from the film much less see the whole moving thing. Not even during daylight hours. I didn’t see that Liv Tyler movie that King talked about in his column but the quote he had from it, “Because you were home,” had (well, has) me freaked out merely reading it. So to make a short story long – no, I won’t be seeing it.
Oh, this can’t be good. If it doesn’t have any of the original cast, I will totally NOT be watching.
No, no, noooooooooooooooooooooo!
The first two were brillant, the third was a tad superflous, so I might rent it.
I’m not a scary movie kind of girl but somehow I have seen all three, and they went steadily downhill. So no, I won’t be seeing this.
I thought the first “Scream” was fantastic because it was funny and it lampooned so many horror movie cliches, while still managing to be an effective horror movie in and of itself (which is definitely worth mentioning).
Scream 2 (which was decent) and Scream 3 (which was not) did the same to a lesser extent for sequels and trilogies, but I really felt like they’d run out of gas by the end of the third movie.
Like Sarah, I’d LOVE to see the original cast return, but I don’t know how realistic that is or if it would work. (Then again, I don’t think Neve Campbell is super busy).
I don’t really have any interest in “Scream: The Next Generation.” Then again, if they hire a decent filmmaker and come up with a fresh witty script, I could definitely be persuaded. I also basically live at the movie theatre, so it’s not like I’m super-selective.
I know some inside info about Scream 4 that will have some people angry and some howling in delight…care to take a STAB at guessing? I couldn’t resist the pun! And yes this is legit – I do not kid!
This sounds like the Weinsteins are getting desperate for a hit. Maybe you guys should write a story about how the new company isn’t performing like the old Miramax.
Nope. Not a chance. I saw the first three, and they were great for the time. Don’t know if anyone cares as much anymore.
Maybe if Kevin Williamson wrote it. He wrote the first two, and they were great. The third, written by someone else, was still fun, but not as good. Actually, I’d be interested to see what story Williamson created, being that horror nowadays (Saw, Hostel) is so different.
Could TWC/Dimension maybe be trying to cash in on Patrick Dempsey’s current revival and rope him in to Scream 4?
I myself have been dying for a proper and good finale (sorry Scream 3 does not do the great original and its superior sequel, Scream 2, any justice) since 2000.
i’m not going to pretend otherwise. i would totally see it. i’m a sucker for a series (as proven by the fact that i’ve seen all the bring it on movies). heck, i’m the one guy who would be interested in a jurassic park iv. i know – they’re all terrible. but that won’t stop me.
What if Scream 4 were a tongue-in-cheek remake of Scream 1, and the self-referentialisms were about remakes? That way, Scream 3 (as poor as it was), can still work (as a trilogy), and Scream 4 can restart the genre, the same way Wes Craven’s New Nightmare breathed life into the Freddie franchise?
Interesting idea Nick but a remake only 12/13 years later? Too soon. Also who says this is really happening – yes they announced it but maybe they have all hopes on Neve Campbell’s return which is not set in stone? HINT HINT! I smell a publicity stunt here for TWC/Dimension. Announce it under the radar and see the response, then give Neve ANOTHER offer if the interest is still there – HINT HINT!
If it was good I would totally see it, but where is the story to go? They did the copy cat story line, they did the “ending” from part 3 – where is there left to go?
I’m SOOOO there. I fell in love with the main characters, so if they are there, so am I. Hell, who am I kidding, even if they’re not, I’m there too!
Oh i would so be down i love this series and is one of my Fav horror series. . .its an actuall slasher movie not many of those anymore now they are torture movies!
It would be even more interesting if they made a prequal and showed what really happened to nevs mom and how courtney was involved in all that! Ive always thought they can totally do a great prequal. . .it would have an awesome story! Cus what really happen and how did they really get the 2 high school kids to start killing i know they explained at the end but i want a better explenation!
No matter what i would go see it. . .and um they need to put out a nice collectors edtion dvd pack with all 3 together! I have yet to buy them on DVD cus thats what im waiting for!
OK NO MAYBE I DONT WANT IT TO BE MADE. . .IF ITS NOT THE ORIGINAL CAST NO! I JUST GOOGLED NEWS IT AND THEY SAY IT WILL NOT BE THE SAME CAST! OH HELL NO IF ITS NOT PLEASE DONT TOUCH IT!
Can’t they just leave it alone?
Why not remake “Demons” or “The Dorm That Dripped Blood” instead?
Why do they have to keep making pointless sequels and remakes?
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TOO many already.
Uh, no. After the last one, I just don’t think it’d be worth the movie ticket.
Really? A Part IV? What’s the twist now? I loved the first scream and forced myself to sit through the sequels, but the 4th one has to be without Jamie Kennedy (he was just a video will in part III). He was partly what helped make the first flick so enjoyable to watch.
Is anyone else here annoyed at the prospect of having to watch David Arquette-Cox in anything? I’m still hating dude from those 10-10-321 ads he did all those years ago.
I count this one as a netflix movie at best, but guess I’m more likely to see it a rainy afternoon on HBO…
OMFG…Ep Sato, you should be the newbie killed in the first 10 minutes for that comment, hehe LOVE The entire SCREAM trilogy! I don’t care that they’re going to make a 4th (its been long enough and will be closer to a decade since the last by the time its released) but i just hope & pray that CAN indeed give it some kinda twist thats not ridiculous. The entire series resurrected the horror franchise in the 90’s (provided many a good movie for me to go on dates with boys that jumped outta their seats!! )
Ep, FYI, Dunno if you caught the Dark Knight review, but my man, saw it yetserday & may go again Thurs night for the press screening on IMAX, but the MOVIE totally TOTALLY will be not just the (comic book) movie of the summer, BUT THE YEEAR! Leder’s Joker is GENIUS. I hope ya enjoy bud when it opens this weekend!!
YES I WILL WATCH IT AND SO WILL ALL THE PEOPLE SAY THEY ARENT, ITS ONE OF THE LAST GOOD HORROR SEQUAL TYPE OF MOVIE
Only the first one was even worth watching…they need to quit making sequels to every damn movie out there.
I’ll take a Scream sequel over a Saw sequel any day of the week.
Yeah, I heard about Final Destination 4, also. At least that one will be in 3-D.
I’m not going to waste my breath complaining about (all the F-ing) sequels these days. There’s no fighting it, so we’ll all just have to deal.
After disliking Scream 3, I think a fresh cast is just what the franchise needs. I’m tired of Neve Campbell and her buddies NOT getting killed.
But writing really is the key. Who knows, maybe Scream 4 is just the movie to pull everyone away from the torture-porn fad.
LOL Phil
For the record, if anyone makes a horror flick and wants to kill me off, PLEASE get in touch with me. “Horror movie victim” and “horror movie villain” are two of my dream roles. I’d even play those roles in a Uwe Bol movie if it meant a particularly gruesome (or hilariously ironic) demise for “EP Sato”! Something akin to Rose McGowan’s death in Scream 1 would be appropriate, except it’d be better if I could somehow be crushed to death by the weight of my own ego.
Batman looks to be amazing, and I plan to hit it up this weekend.
OT: Hulk, Iron Man, Hellboy have all set the screen on fire and Batman is set to break records. In light of that, does anyone else still think Chris Nashawaty was right to bash the comic book movie genre?
I would definitley see Scream 4. The first one is an iconic classic, and the sequels were intelligent, well made, and fun. Something most horror films nowadays lack. Just like Indy, Rocky, Batman, Superman, and all the other icons that are coming back, Scream 4 would be great nostalgic fun. I will definitley be there when Scream 4 hits theaters.
