'Secret Life of the American Teenager' recap: Rumors are flying!

Americanteenager_lWhen we last left our awkwardly horny high schoolers, they were falling in puppy love and/or getting their hearts broken at the school dance. And we were left wanting a little more than the usual stereotypes. Well, it seems that for episode 2, the writers of Secret Life of the American Teenager might’ve actually talked to their teenage relatives for some insight. Behold: dialogue that made me laugh, stories I could believe, and even a little character development!

So, the rumor mill has begun churning, thanks of course to the loud mouths of Amy’s sidekicks and BFFs Lauren and Madison. Hear that kids? Her best friends spilled the proverbial beans — trust no one! It’s high school! As Mama Raphael used to say when I was younger than these Proactiv-using kiddies: "Little rabbits have big ears." The bunnies in this case were Ben’s friends, Alice and Henry, who sauntered up just as Madison blurted out the tip of the iceberg: that Amy and Ricky had sex. Oops! And soon after, word had spread around the school faster than "um, like, that HPV thing."

But wait…there’s more! (After the jump, of course.)

Ricky confided in Amy (pictured, with Ben) about his girl dramz with Adrian, but I can’ttell yet if he’s a decent, wounded guy looking for a friend or if he’sjust a jerk without the proverbial heart of gold. Something tells methough, that the "go somewhere and talk" proposal is synonymous with"just the tip" to randy Ricky. To form an educated opinion, though, it’d  be nice to see a flashback to what actually happenedthat fateful night between Amy and him. Oh, and side note to Adrian and her band-geek accusations against Amy: Watch how you callthe kettle black, girl! You’re a majorette! Since when does a glorified baton twirler get to make fun of anyone for being dorky? Later, Ricky and Adrian consummated their pseudo relationship withsome illicit nookie — on a school night?! I’m feeling for Adrianwith her big empty house and raging hormones; hopefully she can erasethe hot pink "A" that seems to be branded on her.

As for the other half of our love rectangle, at first, I thought that Ben (who, by the way, reminds me much more of JT Yorke from Degrassi than Seth Cohen) offering up "the L-word" to Amy might’ve been a little extreme. But then I recalled how I practically exchanged vowswith my 9th grade boyfriend — on AIM, duh — long before our firstdate…which wasn’t a real date, but a birthday party in my friend’sbasement. I’d have to find the URL for my old Live Journal to correctlyfact-check this memory, but it made me realize Benny Boy’s proclamations weren’t really all that far-fetched.

In other news, my heart went out to Grace in this episode afterwatching her grapple with hating Adrian, still loving Jack, andjuggling these real emotions with her parents’ unreal expectations ofher. The baby feminists across the country must have been groaning whenGrace forgave Jack, but I’m worried that when she finds out that he andAdrian did more than kiss, our Christian pom-pom rocker is going tofreak out on us Jessie Spano style — "I’m so excited! I’m soexcited! I’m so…"

And the juicy story lines are beginning to trickle in from the families, too.Amy’s dad used to be married to Grace’s mom. Plus, theJuergens are having money problems? I smell a good embezzlement or cokescandal brewing. We also got to hear a little more fromAmy’s sis (India Eisley) who is really a fun character, thatdisinterested little sassmachine! As for the rest of the 18-and-overs,I’m bored with "hot new counselor" Marc Molina. At least until/unless he has an affairwith a student!

So how did this episode match up to your teen years? Anything thatwas frighteningly true to your life? Do you think Amy’s "it neverhappened!" is alluding to a trip to the abortion clinic? Butthen wouldn’t the whole show be over?

I have no idea why I’m watching this show…. but I am.
Anyway, I really dislike Grace’s father. Amy’s friends are also questionable at this point. But I think that Grace is starting to become a more interesting character than I expected after last weeks premiere.

This show’s great! Definitely my new obsession; I agree that I hope the new guidance counselor has an affair with Adrian. When will Amy tell her parents she’s preggo!?! And I can’t wait to see more from Amy’s sis; she seems as if she could be a funny character…
I like how none of the normal stereotypical relationships are existent between these characters; a majorette is making fun of a band “geek”, and a guy WANTS to join the band?! I’m practically counting down the hours until next Tuesday night!!!! :)

  • Kevin

This is totally my guilty pleasure. I don’t want to watch it, but I can’t help it!
But wait, when did they say Amy’s dad was married to Grace’s mom? I must’ve missed that part. Could someone please fill me in?

  • sarahh

    yeahh i really wanna see a flashbackk…

  • Hayley

I kinda want Ricky to stand by Amy when he finds out she’s pregnant because his dad treated him like crap.

  • Jenny

Kevin,Amy mentions it when Ricky is talking her about Grace.

  • nope

what do you thinks going to happen after amy has the baby/gets rid of it. Is the show going to be over because the whole show is based on her pregnacy.

  • noname

the show prob wont be over after she has the baby.. cuz she still has to raise it and balance tht will the rest of her life

  • j

obsessed – on rregis and kelly, molly ringwald said her character won’t find out until around the sixth episode.

  • Ashley

I love this show! Its great and i cant wait until next tuesday!I hope when ben finds out amy preagnant he’ll stay with her!

  • Robert

Personally, to me this has no relation to teenage life whatsover to me. But i don’t turn on the t.v. to watch what is happening to me or reality. That is why I watch this show. The secret life is very entertaining. and i don’t think i will stop watching until the end.

  • Megan

I absolutely love this show…it really is like high school. I can’t believe that Amy believed Madison and Lauren when they told her that they didn’t tell anyone about her and Ricky having sex. And Ben * DOES * remind me of JT from Degrassi! I can’t wait until Amy’s parents find out she’s pregnant, especially after her father’s lecture in Episode One. I feel sorry for Grace too…and for Jack. Can’t wait to see what happens next!!!

I don’t have cable but am dying to watch this show. I love trashy high school dramas!

  • allen

this is not a “good” show, and certainly maybe touching for people that have been close to a similar situation, OR high school people who feed on drama and drama for no reason, but Secret Life will do no good for any one with the indulgent self absorbed conversations that the second episode presents. The whole idea is that we as people move beyond that point in our lives, but this show provides no prospective. This is just 7th Heaven trying to have a bite, but the really bad acting (amy sister looks at the camera while giving her the phone) is uncalled for. NOT GOOD TELEVISION, and certainly not a reality that should be a reality for very long, in real life or for an hour every tuesday night.

Am I alone in thinking that the acting is a little lame on this show? Maybe last night’s episode(my first) was just too melodrama-y for my taste but I didn’t connect with a single character…and I’m not that far out of high school! Still, I watched the entire episode and will give the next one a shot. Anything for Molly:)

  • skylar bragg

the show is the best ever

  • Silv

Loving your Jessie Spano reference. Just used it myself this week!
Thanks for confirming – I thought Jack had gone farther w/Adrian but last nite’s show made me doubt my memory.

  • melissa

I love this show me and my daughters watch it to together. Wondering why no one mented that Graces mother is Amy’s fathers x-wife. How will that come up in later shows. Will Grace turn out having sex with Ricky, and then find out the truth from Adrain? I wonder and can’t wait for the next show. I want Amy to talk to Ben about all of it. He will realize Ricky so took advantage. Ben realy loves her and will make love to her.

I was a teenage mother and had my baby 2 days after the last day of the school year. So I know where Amy is coming from, getting sick at school, people talking about you. Although I would not change it for a sec, I don’t want my now teen and preteen girls to make the same mistakes. We DVR and watch it together. As far as the “new hot counselor” acting like students are crazy to ask for prtection, he should be happy to hand them out, just incase. Our family loves the show and maybe just maybe, a teen or preteen out there will be wiser, after finding out alitle more about the way teen boys really think. Graces dad is right about that, but at the same time not being fare to Grace

  • Mandy

i counted during the first episode and they said the word sex 32 times.
