I realize this debate has been going on for awhile, but I just finished reading Eclipse, the third book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series yesterday, so I’m just now entering the fray. (Oh! If you haven’t caught our sneak preview of Meyer’s upcoming Breaking Dawn, by all means click here!)
Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob? After the jump, it’s on. Spoiler-phobes, beware.
So, the obvious answer is Team Edward. At least to my colleague Alynda Wheat, who says, "Team Jacob is comprised of bitter whiners whohate love, and would probably have wanted Juliet to end up with Paris,and Mr. Darcy to take up with his sickly cousin." While I’m on Team Edward, if only because he has better merch, I can still fathom why some people could gravitate to Jacob. Yes, Edward is handsome and intelligent, understanding and patient, mysterious yet open, and dangerous yet fiercely protective. (He also sparkles in the sunlight, drives a Volvo, and can read people’s minds, which would be highly entertaining.) But even though he doesn’t really want Bella to become a vampire to be with him, you know she’ll have to. Sooner or later. And she’ll be giving up so much. (I wonder if you have to hunt mountain lion if you’re a Cullen, or if Carlisle would help broker a deal with the local butcher to get some blood for me her…)
I may find it impossible to think of Jacob as anything other than a little brother, but Bella no longer has that problem. She’s seen the kind of life she could have with him, and she’d be happy. There’s something nice about the fact that they’d choose their relationship: It wasn’t predestined by an imprint or the scent of her blood. (Maybe Bella’s right to worry about whether Edward would be as drawnto her after the change: How will the vampire venom affect her bouquet?)
Choose your side. (And try to play nicely.)

How about neither and Bella finds a healthy relationship. I mean, Edward stalks her and messes with her truck so she can’t go anywhere. And Jacob kisses her against her will (she even slaps him). I just don’t think either of them are healthy relationships. There are lots of great online discussions about this. But I guess most romantic classics are all about unhealthy relationships (hello Romeo and Juliet).
Honestly, Edward AND Jacob should stop obsessing over a doormat like Bella and find awesome independent girls. Or we should just stop worrying about fictional characters and get a life :S
But seriously, I wouldn’t want my young girls (if I had children) reading a book that features such a weak female lead. She’s a loser, get over it!!!
I like stronf independant females who can be reasonable. A loser like Bella comes off as weak and selfish, frankly i don’t like Kristen Stewart period.
Love Edward, but I will agree that at first I thought it was creeeeeepy how he stalked her/likes the scent of her blood (?!?!?!?!) but also factor in the fact that none of the vampire powers work on Bella (except Alice and Jasper)…she’s gotta be special or something, so….TEAM EDWARD.
(Jacob can be kinda annoying too, he’s rather cocky, isn’t he?)

Firmly on Team Edward! He loves Bella enough that he’d go to any lengths to protect her and keep her safe, even at the risk of causing himself(and her) pain. Plus, he wants her happiness more than anything else. He would have been willing to step aside if that was what she really wanted. Jacob kissed her without her permission (major no-no!) and he was totally manipulative with her. I also feel like he wants what will make HIM happy more than what will make HER happy.
So, basically, because Jacob is like Bella, they aren’t fit matches? Seriously, though. Bella is manipulative, selfish, and shallow. Yes, Jake kissed her, but she was leading him on and using him for comfort. She was using him for her own happiness and completely ignoring his desires and emotions. Sure, she felt “guilty” but she also never changed her behavior.
This all pretty much comes down to the fact that I can’t stand Bella Swan as a heroin. She’s weak, ridiculous, and petty. Ick.
TEAM EDWARD. I’ll even root for Team Bacon and Team Phil Collins before I’d want Team Jacob. I can’t even believe that Team Jacob people exist. You’re all like a cancer, killing this fandom. What is wrong with all of you? He assaulted her. Wtf. You lost anyway. Ha!
TEAM EDWARD! The concept of Team Jacob is such a joke. Bella choose Edward. She can’t LIVE without him. She isn’t even sexually attracted to Jacob. Her entire range of emotions for his pathetic mouth raping ass stems from the immense guilt she feels because he’s a selfish manipulator. I think wanting Bella with Jacob is setting feminism back 50 years, not wanting her with a mature man that respects both her mind, body, and soul. Jacob is just a boy with a crush that is getting all butt hurt because he can’t just do what his own destiny is and imprint already and leave everyone the hell alone. The books would be much better if he’d just get the hell over it.

Really? Wow, thanks! So I hate love and am killing a fandom…great. Some of us are Team Jacob, because we do not like the way Edward treats Bella. Yes, I know–shock–I do not like the way he treats he. He makes decisions for her, is manipulative, and treats her like a pet instead of an equal. I truly believe that if she had any spine at all, she’d stand up for herself, have Edward treat her better, or dump him for Jacob. I guess that the kind of love I “hate” is the kind of blind obsession that allows people to put up with controlling behavior. He broke her car after forbidding he to see her friends, tricked her into going across the country after lying through his teeth to her…so yes:

THANK YOU! Finally someone gets it. I’m tired of everyone saying how Edward is the “Perfect Man.” I apparently have a different definition. Edward was completely controlling – it was always about what HE thought was best for Bella, not what she thought was best for herself. He didn’t even have the decency to tell her the truth when he left her (why? because poor Bella couldn’t handle the truth). So, on top of dumping her, he tells her he doesn’t want her anymore and she’s not good enough for him. Nice. He tells Jacob “If there’s anything I can do for you let me know” and then the very next thing he does is forbid her from ever seeing him again. When she tries to see him anyways, he takes her engine apart, and has his sister kidnap her and hold her hostage so she can’t see Jacob. That’s not so not ok. He never actually did anything to deserve Bella’s love other than be really good looking. My other big issue with their relationship is that Bella never feels like she’s good enough for him. She’s not pretty enough, smart enough or graceful enough for him. (Granted Edward doesn’t feel this way), but once she’s a Vampire THEN she’ll be good enough. This sends a horrible message – you shouldn’t have to change who you are for a guy. Would they have even wanted each other if he was human and didn’t have the vampire drawl and the heroine blood addiction going?
Call me crazy, but I’d rather have a man that makes me laugh, is my best friend, that has seen me at my worst and still loves me. Jacob let her make her own decisions. I totally agree with his statement “better scared than lied to.” Again, Edward didn’t think Bella could handle the truth. Plus, Jacob just understood Bella better. Edward wanted to buy her a new car and pay for her schooling, and she really wasn’t comfortable with that. What did Jacob give her? A charm bracelet that he made himself. So personal. In BD, Edward said “I didn’t understand what she was thinking. It wasn’t until I read Rosalie’s mind that I understood, but it took you (Jacob) one second to figure it out). Exactly. As for the whole he manipulated Bella into kissing him – a little perspective. Bella used and manipulated him from day one. She purposely led him on to pump him for information about the Cullens at the beach, then she showed up at his house with the motorcycles, again, to use him for free labor. Then she found out she didn’t hurt as much when she was with him, so started seeing him everyday. She constantly used him. She almost kissed him once. Also, Edward was blackmailing Bella into marrying him. So, if Jacob tricked her into kissing him, I really don’t see it as that horrible – remember she kissed him back.
Edward admits to not being perfect. He even didn’t want Bella to get hurt anymore, that’s why he left her…As I had left the one I loved for a few months. Of course I went back to her and solved things out. Once again no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, even VAMPIRES. Bella’s blood called to Edward in meaning destiny, Jacob never imprinted on Bella so it showed only a small crush and possible jealousy. Bella tends to look through Edward’s flaws, because she LOVES him. That’s what you do when you LOVE someone. But with Jacob forcing Bella into a kiss…And then make her kiss him back because he made her feel sorry…Sorry Jake, but Bella doesn’t love you past Brother point. Jacob deserves Renesmee, because she’s probably better than her mom. Don’t worry, I’m a die hard Team Jacob fan as-well. :3

I liked Jacob in New Moon – I thought he was such a sweetie. But by the end of Eclipse I really hated him. He was so manipulative, selfish, and cruel. And way too immature. Like an annoying 5-year-old who has to have HIS way. In addition to the assault on Bella’s mouth, he manipulates Bella into feeling something for him by making her think he’s gone and killed himself because she didn’t love him. WHAT is that? Wow. What an awesome guy. And then he makes her feel bad, because in the end, she still wants Edward – Who he knew she loved in the first place. Edward was willing to step aside if Bella truly wanted Jacob, but Jacob was just bitter.
At this point I think Bella is just so exhausted. I’m kind of not opposed her to choosing neither. But I’m on Team Edward.
