Pour Some Sugar on Taylor Swift

Swiftleppard_lThis just in and making me giddy and slightly uncomfortable: CMT’s cross-genre concert series Crossroads is set to pair Taylor Swift and her favorite rock band, Def Leppard. I’ll give you a moment to process the idea of them singing each other’s songs…

And, you’re back. The concert will tape in Nashville in October and premiere on CMT in November.

Taylor is clearly psyched. "Every time I’ve seen Crossroads on CMT I’ve always thought, ‘If I ever get to do one of those, it HAS to be with Def Leppard!,’ so this is really a dream come true for me," she said in a press release. "I have been screaming the words to Def Leppard songs for years… so it’s amazing that I’m going to get to share a stage with them this year!" So, too, is Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot (pictured), who said, "How cool is this?! Country’s hottest young star wanting to work with us!!"

I am a huge fan of the Crossroads series. If you haven’t caught any of the concerts, check out Maroon 5 and Sara Evans doing "She Will Be Loved"; Bon Jovi and Sugarland doing "It’s My Life"; John Fogerty and Keith Urban doing "Centerfield" (talk about giddy); Melissa Etheridge and Dolly Parton doing "Come to My Window"; Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire doing "Since U Been Gone"; Joss Stone and LeAnn Rimes doing "Summertime"; Lindsey Buckingham and Little Big Town doing "Bring it on Home to Me"; John Mayer and Brad Paisley doing "Daughters"; and James Taylor and the Dixie Chicks doing "Carolina in My Mind." You’ll understand why.

If you’ve seen the series, what are your favorite moments from it?

There was a James Taylor/Dixie Chicks Crossroads AND I MISSED IT?!?! I know what I’ll be looking for online tonight. My favs are Bon Jovi/Sugarland (Who Says You Can’t Go Home), Kelly/Reba (Fancy), Leann Rimes/Joss Stone (ditto on Summertime), and Lyle Lovett/Bonnie Raitt.

I loved the Maroon5/Sara Evans and Reba/Kelly. I am not looking forward to DL/TS though. Huge fan of DL. Not liking Taylor Swift at all. I do appreciate the talent that she has with her songwriting, but her voice does absolutely nothing for me. I have to change stations.
Evidently, with her millions in sales, I am the only one to feel that way though.

The cover of Leather and Lace by Maroon 5 and Sara Evans was AWESOME!

  • jes

My absolute FAVORITE Crossroads is James Taylor and the Dixie Chicks! Fantastic! I also saw them in concert together and it was amazing. My second fave is Sugarland and Bon Jovi. Obviously JBJ was/is married and I think Jennifer Nettles was at the time, as well, but you could have cut the sexual tension with a knife.

I have to disagree with GatorGal. I thought Maroon 5 and Sara Evan’s cover of “Leather and Lace” was one of the worse things ever. I love Adam but his voice is way too high for that song. That Crossroads show was only saved by Maroon 5.
The best crossroads yet has been Benatar and McBride. Benatar blew McBride out of the water- it was great!

  • Bobbi

I loved Reba/Kelly. But more importantly, would someone PLEASE tell Taylor that she canNOT sing!! Like the songs she writes but everytime she opens her mouth, my ears start to bleed.

  • aymzer

Loved Brad and John together. They have a similar sense of humor in my opinion. Good match.

  • Mike C.

I loved the long-forgotten Ryan Adams/Elton John Crossroads. Oh My Sweet Carolina by Elton John was superb…

The Dixie Chicks and James Taylor Crossroads was absolutely the best. The best part was watching Natalie’s face as she watched James Taylor sing – her idol. If possible, their concerts together were even better.
A Taylor Swift/Def Leppard Crossroads scares me! A whole lot of off-key screamin’ going on…especially on Taylor’s part, which won’t be much of a change for her.

  • jaime

Oh the best by far is KELLY & REBA!!! THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB~ and cus of the great response to that they have been touring together! Come to Houston please. . . .we are waiting!!!

  • Ryan B

    Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle
    Ryan Adams and Elton John
    Martina McBride and Pat Benatar

  • MsDaisy

That was Emmylou & Dave Matthews and Roseanne Cash & Steve Earle

  • Plum

The Brad Paisley and John Mayer episode is my favorite by far. I still go on YouTube to watch them singing “Why Georgia” together. Brad sounds great!

Whenever I hear a new combo – I say “Ugh” – but everytime – they surprise me.
They have a winner here – they should just have one channel showing these over and over again.
And, CMT, by the way – the “M” stands for “Music” – enough of these non-music shows like reruns of Trading Spouses and Nanny 911 – play more music…
I watch much more of GAC – because they, like you, should be playing more music.
And catch Opry live on Saturday nights – really great performances of old and new acts. They are really honored to sing there.

Pat Benatar and Martina McBride “We Belong” and Maroon 5 and Sara Evans “Wake Up Call”

  • Elizabeth

If CMT had any sense they’d put these sessions out on CD. There are about 4 off the top of my head I’d buy in a heartbeat.

  • sarah

Bon Jovi and Sugarland, hands down. Jon Bon and Jennifer sounded so great together, especially on “believe”, which CMT seriously needs to release on CD!

  • Alison

I love pretty much every episode of Crossroads, but a few that stand out in my mind are Maroon 5/Sara Evans, Kenny Chesney/John Mellencamp, and Bon Jovi/Sugarland.
I second the idea for CMT to release these sessions on a CD, or a DVD at least, because I’ve downloaded a few bootleg tracks but I would definitely be willing to pay for them if they were available.

  • jes

To Elizabeth…ICAM!!! I even e-mailed CMT after the JT/DC Crossroads asking if/when cd’s would be released. I gotta “No dice”. Well, it was probably more professional than that but that was the jist.

  • spud

Yeah, I have to go with the Pat Benatar and Martina McBride session. They pretty much nailed each others songs throughout, and they are both smokin’ hot!

  • jes

OH! And I also loved Heart and Wynonna.

  • BIll

Benatar/McBride was the best with close second by the Dixie Chicks and James Taylor

  • bkb

karen, it has been awhile since benatar and mcbride were on crossroads. i think you need to rethink what you thought you heard on that program. seems to me it was equally excellent performances by both of them.no need to degrade martina, it took both of them to make the show.

  • J.R. Journey

Your are not the only one to feel that way, Adan. I too have to change the station when her voices comes on screeching and wailing ‘Should’ve Said No’ or that god-aweful ‘Picture to Burn’. Not over my radio waves, sister.

  • Ahmi

My favorite was the Sugarland and Bon Jovi episode! My song was It’s My Life!

  • barbara baer

the only thing i have to say is taylor
cant sing she is very annoying same songs all the time.when her videos come on i turn them off ….

  • Adan

Delayed Reaction. This didn’t hit me until this morning when “Bringing On The Heartbreak” cycled onto my MP3… I was so stuck on TS singing Def Leppard songs that the true horror sunk in: DL singing TS songs. I think this may make watching this worth it. Can y’all imagine DL singing “Tim McGraw” or “Our Song” or any other of her songs which all seem to be about pining for/hating on/crushing after some teenaged boy?

  • rhonda

it always surprises me the people they pair together on crossroads. i loved martina and pat benetar. i also loved james taylor and the dixie chicks, but my all time favorite was reba and kelly. their harmonies were amazing on ballads like because of you and the greatest man. you could see the mutual respect they had for each other. i don’t get tired of watching them perform. a tour was created because of the response they received. i can’t wait to see them in concert again. if you haven’t seen them together in concert you are missing out on a great show. they are having a good time singing with each other. go…you won’t be disappointed.

  • Bryan

Lindsey Buckingham and Little Big Town
Los Lonely Boys and Ronnie Milsap
    John Fogerty and Keith Urban
ZZ Top and Brooks & Dunn are good and what are the names of the Joss Stone and LeAnn Rimes Songs

  • Jen

Reba and Kelly were great. Don’t forget Kenny Chesney & John Mellencamp…they were awesome together.
