I’m not going to make excuses. I could say that I was a recent college graduate and didn’t have the money for Showtime, but I won’t. I could say that no one ever suggested I watch it, but that would be a lie. So I come to you, PopWatchers, in the presence of my fellow pop-culture savants, to proffer this confession: I just watched the excellent Weeds for the first time a few weeks ago. I know. I know. Where have I been? In my defense, it seems no matter how TV-savvy one is, something always falls through the cracks. And for me, that has always been premium cable shows. Much like Entourage and Sex and the City before it, I’ve had to rely on TV on DVD to get with the program. Now I can hardly get enough of the marijuana mama (Mary-Louise Parker, pictured), and I’ve been chasing it down with a helping of my other new favorite, The Tudors (hello, Henry Cavill!).
But I can’t be the only one. What shows are you finally catching up with on DVD? Is Lost no longer a mystery (or at least less of a mystery)? Do you finally understand the McFuss surrounding Grey’s Anatomy? I need details!

West Wing
Felicity
Arrested Development
Firefly + Wonderfalls
It’s the last two that really break my heart, because had I known they were so stellar, I would have recruited any additional friend/viewer I could find…
I’m the same way, Amy, it’s always the premium cable shows — Weeds, Dexter, and Entourage. But I was also lucky enough to find Battlestar Galactica after the 2nd season so now I’m caught up and totally hooked!
Buffy, Angel and Firefly. Also Undeclared and Freaks and Geeks. And I have Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me waiting for me once I finish Angel. Thank God for DVD, or else I’d miss out on the geniuses of Joss Whedon and Judd Apatow.
I was way behind and have only watched Gilmore Girls on DVD, never on network TV.
1. Dead Like Me- We didn’t have Showtime when this show was on the air, not that that was long.
2. Rome- Kept putting off watching it. Luckily we caught up with Season 1 in time to watch the marvelous second season in real time.
L Word, Dexter, Sex and the City, someday I’ll get around to Six Feet Under on DVD
Buffy (finishing it this weekend)
Angel (next on the docket)
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
The West Wing
Bones
TV on DVD keeps me sane, and has let me watch a lot of series that I didn’t watch before my current television obsession. It also lets me keep all-time favorites close at hand. Alias, Gilmore Girls, The Office, Friday Night Lights.
I’m a little poor, so I usually end up discovering TV shows on DVD when individual seasons go for sale at Best Buy or somewhere else for around $20. If a TV season hits that price and I’ve read that it’s supposed to be a good show and it’s something I think I might enjoy, I take the plunge. That’s how I got into:
Arrested Development
Entourage
Rescue Me
Nip/Tuck
and, yes, Weeds
…oh, and “The Wire” and “Friday Night Lights”
I never watched Dead Like Me or The West Wing when they were actually on. It ws only a year after they were off the air that I watched them, and I power-watched most of the way through them.
Friday Night Lights!
I don’t have cable at all, so there are many. Flight of the Conchords, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Extras, Dead Like Me, Rome, Battlestar Galactica… I know there are more, just can’t think right now. I’ve been watching the CBS version of Dexter. No cable excuse for Firefly and Wonderfalls, though; just missed the boat at the time.
WEEDS! Bought Season 1 at Target…rented Season 2 from the library…bought Season 3 the day it went on sale earlier this month. Now I’m going crazy knowing Season 4 is on Showtime now and I can’t watch it! It will be too long until it’s out on DVD. Anyone have any ideas on how I can watch the latest season of the BEST show ever? (other than adding more $ to my already expensive cable bill).
For me, it has been Freaks and Geeks and Battlestar Galactica. Thank goodness for DVD on TV!!
I mean, TV on DVD! LOL!!
During the writers’s strike I started watching tv on dvd.I have now seen every episode of Arrested Development, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, and Dead Like Me The strike was actually a good thing for me! Now I feel dumb for not watching any of those quality shows when they were on originally.
“Mad Men: Season 1″ is at the top of my Blockbuster Online queue waiting to ship. When it premiered, I thought to myself, “Who the hell is going to watch an original series on AMC?”
Firefly and Veronica Mars Season 1
The OC- for me it was never a must see show when it was on and I’m sure there were other shows I watched while it was on so I couldn’t record it. I bought the whole series afterwards and while I still don’t looooooooove it (my heart belongs to One Tree Hill) I’m glad I got it- I love Seth and Summer.
Oh yeah, Weeds and The Tudors for me too. I think I watch more TV on DVD, trying desperately to catch up with everything I’ve missed. Some others that have only been revealed to me on DVD:
Deadwood
Firefly
Rome
House
One Tree Hill
Dead Like Me
Battlestar Galactica
And while I watched these shows when they originally aired, DVD sets have allowed me to continually revel in the greatness that was Six Feet Under, Arrested Development and Veronica Mars.
I watched the first 3 1/2 seasons of lost on my computer within like 2 months and caught up in time to watch the end of the 4th season on TV!!! I’m so hooked now.
Also, I (THANKFULLY) discovered 30 Rock on DVD and now I’m an addict, that show is really amazing.
When I had my wisdom teeth pulled and I was home for days I discovered The Sopranos on DVD and was hooked. Also thanks to EW I finally rented Freaks and Geeks and it’s my all time favorite show.
I watched Felicity, Six Feet Under, Alias, and Arrested Development on DVD in the last 3 summers. Right now I’m halfway through season 3 of The Sopranos, but it’s hard to avoid spoilers, even in EW!
lost. my mom was into it the first season and i gave it a shot for about half an episode. i thought it was stupid “who ever heard of polar bears on an island?” then my friend got the first season on dvd. i watched the whole thing over spring break and then bought everything i’d missed of season 2 from itunes. I’ve been hooked ever since!
I’ve caught up with many shows on DVD, mostly catching up on HBO shows when I didn’t have the money to subscribe.
I most recently caught up on The Wire. In the past there was The Sopranos, Entourage, and Deadwood.
Hello, my name is julia and I am a tv-on-DVD (or now Hulu) addict. I’ve been known to do great, long swaths of entire series in a week or two (depending on the Netflix gods). In no paticular order:
Farscape
Battlestar Galatica (new version)
Burn Notice
Psych
Bones
Weeds
It’s gotten to the point where I get annoyed when I sit down to watch an actual, individual show on TV and I can’t skip the commercial or find the director’s commentary. It’s a sickness, I tell you!
The question should be, What TV show DIDN’T I discover on DVD? I’m only nineteen, and therefore missed out on the early seasons, and sometimes entire runs, of awesome-but-R-rated shows like The Wire and The Sopranos, “grown-up” sitcoms like NewsRadio, and shows that were just plain good but out of my realm of interest at the time, like Freaks & Geeks, Dead Like Me, and ESPN’s Playmakers. I love TV on DVD for a lot of reasons, but being able to watch entire series, straight through, that I otherwise would never get to see is the perk at the top of the list.
Netflix has been such a godsend — people think I’m strange when I tell them I mainly use it to catch up on TV shows that I missed. I was able to finally see the brilliance of The Office, Veronica Mars, Bones, Rome, and most recently, Firefly. Next up are The Tudors and Burn Notice.
I wait for most stuff to come out on DVD anyway because Netflix is so convenient, and I watch too many movies/too much tv to stay current with everything anyway. But the ones that I knew the least about before seeing and were the most fun to watch were “Deadwood” and “The Wire.” All I really knew about them was one was a Western with a lot of cursing and the other was a cop show in Baltimore. As for slightly older fare, I’ve started watching “The Twilight Zone,” since I had never seen an episode before, and the British show “Poirot” about the Agatha Christie detective.
Battlestar Galactica. *sigh* I’m so ashamed. I wish I had been a fan from the beginning. But, in my defense, I don’t have cable – which means I pretty much want to have Netflix’s babies. Also got into Ugly Betty thanks to Netflix.
