With Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black still residing among Billboard’s Top 100 albums after 66 weeks on the charts, and Duffy’s "Mercy" turning into a solid radio staple, who knows if America is ready to embrace yet another retro-soul diva. But as far as I’m concerned, it’d be a shame if Kreesha Turner’s gorgeously melancholy "Don’t Call Me Baby" (embedded below with fan-made slide-show) doesn’t get a chance to enter the Thunderdome and fight it out as an official candidate for Song of Summer 2008. That falsetto breakdown before the final chorus — where Turner asks "What you gonna say this time? What’s your excuse?/ When you gonna break my heart? When you gonna break?/ Nobody hurts like you" — gives me chills (on repeat loop). In fact, not since "Irreplaceable" has a defiant goodbye to an errant lover hurt so bad.
What say you, PopWatchers? Are you ready to hop aboard the Kreesha Turner bandwagon, or should the lady take a number and get in line for my iPod’s "Home for Tragic Divas" playlist?

Okay so here is the scenario: This song is playing and then all of a sudden the voice-over pipes in with:
And now the WB’s New Tuesday presents a fresh episode of…One Tree Hill. Brought to you by the Neutogena Clean and Clear family of products. And now…a fresh episode of…One Tree Hill.
I think Amy and Duffy can rest easy. Kreesha is not in their league. Her voice is thin and screechy, the production is underdeveloped and the song itself is just not that good.
The Song of Summer was already named by online voting.

Slezak, this one should get in line for the “Home for Tragic Divas” playlist (LOVE the title, by the way – mine would feature Jessica Folker and Billie Myers). It’s got the retro-soul sound, but girlfriend doesn’t have the gritty, booming voice that have defined both Duffy and Amy.
I like “Irreplaceable,” but I would never call say it hurts so bad. It’s too defiant.
Wow, Jimmy Greenfield…a song that has been on the Billboard Hot 100 since mid-FEBRUARY is voted Best Song of the Summer? That’s pretty pathetic.
I thought Madison Avenue sang a song named “Don’t Call Me Baby” much better. Wow, I need to go find that on iTunes.
Is American radio actually going to play a Canadian R&B song. That doesn’t happen too often. This song is all over the radio in Canada
what is with this retrogression in music lately?? can we try to sound more 2008 not 1968?
as for song of the summer im going with “I Kissed A Girl” by Katy Perry
The amount of dumb things said in just a few sentences of LK’s response must be a record of some sort
Wow like half of the possible choices on that Chicago Tribune list have been on the radio since Feb and March. And if you follow the British music scene, Bleeding Love is from friggin September of 2007. But looks like Jimmy Greenfield treats that list like it was carved in stone.
This song doesn’t do much for me. My summer song remains to be “Mercy” by Duffy.
This song is booooooooooring.
Re: Fatima
..ok? its blatantly obvious that these singers (Duffy,Whinehouse) are singing like we’re in the mid ’60s..on what level is that dumb?? I get that its neo-soul/r&b but they’re also trying to bring back the whole style too
and Katy Perry’s song was released to radio a little less than 2 months ago and it steadily climbed the charts to be the number 1 single soooo therefore its a contender for song of the summer..and its a hell of a lot catchier than Kreesha Turner’s song
And Katy Perry isn’t completely 1980s-retro?
It’s rather blah. I’m still partial to Mercy and American Boy as my summer songs.
If I hear this song one more time I’m going to lose it. It’s horrible.
why is 60’s revival a bad thing? And someone brings up the point that Katy Perry is totally 80’s revival. I know it counts as summer, it is just an awful song.
I vote for American Boy by Estelle as well
I think this song is a fake pop remake of a popular 80s song.
If you listen to the rhythm of this song carefully, especially at the start, it sounds like Def Leopard’s “Love Bites”
And the “eh, heh, hey, walkin away now” part sounds like it comes from some other song I’ve heard before but can’t quite place it.
That Duffy song is pretty pedestrian…
This song be on youtube it’s awful
right on ‘anonymous’. good ear. Def Leppard melody steal in the bridge for sure!
The eh hey hey part sounds like the Barenaked Ladies – “Its all been done before”…the verses sound almost identical to Def Leppard’s “Love Bites”. I am surprised there are no law suits pending.
