Gev gets political on 'So You Think You Can Dance'

An astute reader (thanks "Elipsos B"!) has pointed out that during his pre-taped rehearsal and interview, Gev wore a shirt with the unmistakable image of one of the hooded Abu Ghraib prisoners with electrodes on either hand and draped in an American flag. Watching it again, it is literally all I can look at, but somehow I missed it the first time through:

I don’t feel too bad about that though, since apparently no one at Fox (Fox!) caught it either — and I really cannot believe this network in particular would let something so baldly political come anywhere near their summer cash cow. (Heck, last year Nigel felt it necessary to apologize for Wade Robson’s "Waiting on the World to Change" routine, and all the dancers wore then were t-shirts with the words "peace" and "compassion" written on them.)

Did you catch Gev’s shirt? Do you think rehearsals for a disco routine (or for that matter, any form of reality TV programming) are an appropriate place for such a statement? And do you think it affects Gev’s chances of making it through to the next week? — Adam B. Vary

I don’t watch this show, so someone please fill me in: SOmeone apologized for t-shirts reading “Peace” and “Compassion?” WTH?

Jennifer: It was anti-war dance – and some people may have taken it as anti soldiers.
As far as Gev, I totally did not notice it. But you can be sure that if there is any sort of out cry regarding that shirt…. Gev will be the first one sent home.
I kind of don’t know how I feel about that shirt…. I’m fairly liberal and I feel like that was a pretty odd statement to make on a dance show. I have to imagine that most people didn’t pick up on it AT ALL.

Totally didn’t notice it the first time. Now that I see it, I’ve got to applaud his cojones in wearing it. It’s not something your average audience member would catch, but once you see it, it’s unmistakable. I hope it doesn’t get him booted, or that he’s forced to make some kind of cockamamie apology on tonight’s show. He’s one of my favourites, and this subtle political commentary is fine by me. That being said, I’m sympathetic to Gev’s position, and I’m sure that has a HUGE impact on how I’m reacting to his shirt. I don’t know how I would have felt had he been wearing something that expressed a different view…

I’m pretty sure there will be no outcry…and if Gev gets sent home it’ll be because his dance wasn’t that great! I didn’t catch it originally…and I had to pause the youtube clip to actually notice what it was. Honestly, if anything, most of America will think it’s a star with an American flag lain over it…I sure did.

I will try to contain my bitterness if he gets kicked off for this little matter since he was in the last-spot-face-off with Brandon and them kicking him off for a shirt would be a total slap in the face to Gev and any other dancers who could’ve taken his spot (yeah, I’m looking at Brandon and Evan). They need to judge him on his dance and not his clothes so if they try to get all up in arms on the show tonight about this I will most likely make a face like this. D:

    That is a weird shirt.

Wont be surprised if he gets the heave-ho. FOX is not exactly known for it’s moderate, liberal viewpoints.

Anybody know where I can get that shirt? Do they sell it online somewhere?

  • Sara S.

Umm…. it makes me like him MORE!! A kid with thoughts in his head, yeah!

  • Katie Kruger

I didn’t catch it but I wouldn’t be surprised if something like this happens again. I mean, he was wearing a “drop beats not bombs” T ( a shirt I love) during his audition

  • thad

    wow!!! is all i can say….and bye-bye

    Ha!!!
If you have the episode from tonight 06/12 (Thursday), rewind it again and watch closely as the guy that gets kicked danced for his life. I dont remember his name, but he was the one wearing shiny blue skin tight underwear when his partner pulled his pants down during their routine on stage.
If you look closely as he stands up and walks over to the host, he popped a Semi under the zipper and noticeably tried to hide it. He of course failed to do so…

I saw the shirt and I noticed the flag on it, but I wasn’t paying close enough attention to notice exactly what it was. It’s strange because I did see the flag and I actually thought someone might complain that it looked kinda ragged, but I guess it was even a little more in depth than that.

  • MZ

I did notice it and I thought it was great. I am all about people taking a stand. That is what hip-hop is supposed to be about. (I think he is a break dancer.)

  • Bobbi

Wow, i didn’t notice, and now look… the next week, he is gone. :-\
