I want to see 'Kit Kittredge' -- is that weird?

Categories: Film, Movie Trailers

Kit_lI already feel a slight pang of embarrassment (and self-loathing) any time I tell someone my favorite show is Gossip Girl – a series for teens that’s also deliciously appealing to "grown ups" like me. But now it seems the bar has fallen even lower: After seeing the trailer for Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, starring Abigail Breslin as a 10-year-old wannabe reporter during the Great Depression, I want to see the film. Is that weird?

Here’s why. First off, the cast looks great. Breslin could not be cuter in her little blond wig (pictured), plus she’s got Julia Ormond and Chris O’Donnell as parents (it’s been a while since we’ve seen either actor in worthy big-screen roles). Not to mention the fact that Joan Cusack, Stanley Tucci, and Jane Krakowski pop up in supporting spots.

But the real reason I want to see the movie is my undying love for anything American Girl. As a kid, I had all the books and even organized lemonade stands to earn money towards my very own overpriced doll. Sadly, my entrepreneurial skills never got me the coveted Kirsten (the pioneer American Girl) I wanted. When I moved to Chicago a few years ago, I made a painful loop around the giant Michigan Avenue American Girl Place, cursing my unfulfilled youth. But I digress…

Have you ever sheepishly slinked into a movie theater to pacify your inner eight-year-old? (And yes, Transformers counts.) Or should I just grow up and see Get Smart instead?

I took my niece to Enchanted as an excuse to see the movie.

  • Cinderella

When I was in college, I, um, saw the Lizzie McGuire movie in the theaters. I went with a friend who was also a little embarassed to be going, so we were each other’s support. It also helped that we were 2 of 6 whole people in the entire theater for that showing.

I wanted an American Girl doll soooo bad when I was a kid (Molly, specifically, because she had glasses. But I liked Samantha’s clothes the best). And even though I’m 26 and I know the company’s focus is more on those “dolls that lokk like you” instead of the historical characters, and even though they’re now owned by Mattel and rediculously overpriced and probably made in sweatshops – I still want one. If I ever have a daughter, she can expect me to take her to one of those American Girl “boutiques” where your doll gets her own seat at the cafe table after a hairstyle and facial… For my daughter’s benefit, of course.

    Amy,
You are not alone – it looks very cute. Let’s face it, if this was a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie or a new one on ABCFamily we’d all be tuning in from our living rooms, so I will own up and say American Girl? Yay!

  • MCM

Transformers? Check. Iron Man? Check. Speed Racer? Check. Of course, I TOTALLY used my 4 and 10 year old sons as an excuse to go see ‘em.
For the record, I’m their MOTHER.

Two years ago the local $1 theater showed “The Care Bears Movie II” on a Wednesday morning. As I was then unemployed I decided to go…I was the only person there above 5 who didn’t have a child with me. It was awesome, and I have no shame.

I went to see The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by myself in the theater. I’m a 31 old man. (And by ‘man’, I mean loser).

  • Jackie

You’re not a loser! And if you are, then I must be an even bigger one because I still have my 3 American Girl dolls from when I was a girl. Admittedly, I would never give those away because they cost so much f-ing money. :)
And I went to the flagship American Girl store in Chicago when I was waaaay too old–15. But it was totally worth it. And I went to the Manhattan one a few years ago and it was fun to act a little like I was 11 again. At least that time I wasn’t tempted to spend my hard-earned $$$ on over-priced outfits and whatnot–because let’s be honest, they kind of are.

  • Martha

My husband and I used to see all the Pixar movies in the theater…before we had a kid. And I’m looking forward to taking my daughter to see “Kit Kitteredge” – and seeing it myself.

  • Lauren

I’m 27, and my 23-year-old sister and I have referred to The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books as “our Harry Potter.” Needless to say, we saw the movie. On the first night. And we’re planning on seeing the sequel together, even though we live in different cities.
Not only did I get the Kit doll at age 20 (she was just too cute!), I’ve been known to take a stroll around the American Girl boutique (I live in Chicago). I can also blame my sister for this one–she had Molly growing up and often requests we go in. And yes, we squeal over dolls and outfits and wish that the new ones had been around when we were kids.
As for the Kit movie–am I gross for thinking that Kit’s dad (Chris O’Donnell) is totally hot?

My husband and I took our kids–even the teenagers–to the VeggieTales Jonah movie “for my birthday.” I took my daughter to Ice Princess because we both wanted to see it, and we take the kids to Pixar and Harry Potter movies. If the kids outgrow them, we’ll just have to go without them. I want to see Kit Kittredge, and will go whether my daughter wants to or not. I’ll also see Get Smart; I don’t think it has to be either/or.

  • LisaMama

I love the Harry Potter movies, though I don’t think they really qualify as “kids’ movies” only.
I also Netflixed Enchanted because I wanted to see it. My 2 young boys balked and didn’t want to watch with me because it was a “girls movie” — and then ended up watching it and liking it!
Oh, and my husband and did the same as another poster before we had kids — we saw Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story and other Disney and Pixar classics before we had kids.

Just this weekend my bf and I went to see Kung Fu Panda with no children in tow. It was an 8:00 show, but we were still the only kid-free couple in the theater.
But for Kit Kittredge, I’m definitely borrowing my 7- and 11-year-old cousins. I’m all about American Girls. I had Molly and Addy growing up. Mom’s side of the family bought Molly & her stuff, and dad’s side of the family got Addy & her stuff. Ain’t being a child of divorced parents grand?

okay, i’m 37 and obviously I have no pride as i watch Gossip Girl openly, i not only saw Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in the theaters but I love the book series, Step-up is one of my all time favorite films, I am addicted to all things Harry Potter. I can’t count how many times I have seen all the films. And now I am addicted to all things Twilight series — have been for a very long time and I have never met a Pixar film I didn’t like. Now I may not see Kit Kittredge in the theaters but it will be at the top of my Netflix que when it comes out on DVD. I am a librarian who works with teens so I do have an excuse but truly my pop-culture tastes are that I of a 15 year old girl.

  • Katie Kruger

I also was a massive fan of the American Girl series. (Molly was my favorite) but I came this close to buying on of those over priced dolls. I decided to go with the book set instead and yes, I still read them.

  • Minutiae

I dare anyone to try to keep me out of the theater anytime a new Pixar movie comes out. No, I don’t have any kids, and I’m not one bit ashamed. Wall*E is my most anticipated movie of the summer.

  • Sorella

I take my 2 nieces to any kiddy movie I want to see, dread when they become of age they don’t want to go anymore!! My hubby likes some of them too, but only watches in the privacy of our living room!

  • gabrielle

High School Musical anyone? I’m worried because the 3rd one will come out int theaters, so now I can’t embarass myself with only the cat as a witness. ABC family and Disney orignal movies are my go-to programming, even if they are geared towards tweens.

  • Tim Lade

Amy dude! OWN IT! If you want to do something than do it and be proud! I am a geek and my love of Transformers knows no bounds and my mom mocks me for it sure but it makes me happy. You have to embrace the things that make you happy and if you want to see Kit Kittredge do it dude and no regrets. See RENT.

  • Bethann

You go to that movie with your head held high!! I saw both “Finding Nemo” and “The Incredibles” in the theater with my husband and my parents and I was in my 20s. I also went to see “Bring It On” all by myself in the theater when I was 25. There is no shame in it!!

  • Lucky

I went to see both Madagascar and Sharkboy and Lavagirl (because it was in 3D!) with no reservations, until I looked around and saw I was the only adult male in the theater. I felt really icky and rushed out the theater after they were over.

  • Banana

I very enthusiastically went and saw the Powerpuff Girls movie in theaters. My best friend fell asleep sitting next to me, but I loved it!

  • CCSouth

Be jealous. I had Kirsten AND Felicity. Also, for a brief period, I owned my little sister’s Addy and Samantha because she went through a phase of being seriously scared of all dolls after seeing a preview for some doll horror movie.

  • Anonymous

it’s not weird. kit’s my favorite american girl doll

  • Anonymous

I love the American Girl dolls. I didn’t have one, but my sis had Samantha (my fave!). I remember checking out all the books in elementary school. Loved Samantha, Felicity, and Kirsten the best. I will probably rent this one or find a little tyke to take with me!

  • Megan

I agree! Own it! I totally enjoyed the baby sitters club movie. I read like a hundred and fifty of those suckers in elementary school.

  • melissa

Well I didnt have any american girls by my twins got the itty bitty babies for there xmas gift they are 3 now. I have 4 kiddos so I am covered on the kids excuses, but tennny bopper movies are always my pic.
Smurfs come onto the big screen This Winter a whole new trilogy! I have been trying to get my kids to watch the old VHS tapes in preparation.

  • El

While I don’t have much interest in Kit Kittredge, I understand the feeling. I’m still pissed that my husband wouldn’t go with me to see the Hannah Montana 3-D concert movie that came out in February. (I’m… 26, BTW).

  • kidathearts

While I’m too old for the American Girl series, I DID see A Goofy Movie twice in the theater. I also saw the following: Spongebob Squarepants, all Disney animations, and Enchanted. No, I didn’t bring the kids either. Sometimes it’s important to stay in touch with your inner 8-yr old. It’s how you stay young!

  • Cory

I’m a sucker for Disney movies. As a 21 year old male, I’m embarrassed to tell my friends that I own many of the old school Disney animated movies, and that I love new releases like Enchanted too. Usually when I want to see these movies, though, I bring a child as a front for seeing the movie.
