Should there be a 'Sex and the City' sequel?

Categories: Film, Sex and the City

Satcpreview_lEven before last weekend’s boffo opening, buzz was growing about a possible Sex and the City sequel. Now that we ladyfolk have proved to Hollywood that we really do like to watch movies (why was there ever a doubt?), a sequel seems ripe for the picking. Writer/producer/director Michael Patrick King has said he won’t rule out the idea. "I wrote that movie with a beginning, middle and end because I didn’t want to leave the audience unfulfilled," he told Variety. "The actresses are great, and if the gods smile and people are still interested, why not?" Kim Cattrall has also expressed interest, but that was before her new sex- (not Sex) themed HBO series was announced.

As a series fan who didn’t love the cinematic version, I’m not clamoring for another Manolo-shod stroll down Park Avenue anytime soon. I think my movie date Kate said it best: "The movie really made me miss the show." And I can’t help but wonder if we are letting our separation anxiety cloud our better judgment. Sure, it was great seeing the girls again, but what relevant (not to mention interesting) story lines are left? Charlotte as PTA president? Menopausal Carrie? Seinfeld had the right idea: Leave at the top with people wanting more. Let’s let our Sexy ladies do the same.

What do you think, PopWatchers: Are you ready for another go? If so, what do you think should happen to your favorite Sex and the City character in the (potential) sequel? Or are you ready to wave goodbye to the fabulous foursome?

I’m all for leaving things where they’re at and not going for another movie, but I have to ask – Seinfeld leaving at the top? That’s some interesting revisionist history…

I would go see it. I think that there are always possibilities for stories. It has to be done right however. Look at the mistakes that were made in the first one, listen to the fans to see what we liked and disliked. The show went out on top for sure, the movie had it’s positive and negatives for sure, but overall it I thought it was pretty good.

If a movie makes money there will almost certainly be a sequel. Sex and the City? Ka-ching!

A sequel would be difficult to pull off. The final episode of the series was essentially their “and they all lived happily ever after” moment, and then the movie reopened things and then gave them another “happily ever after.” They can’t go to that well again, so what else is there?
In the series, did they ever explain how these women actually met and became friends? Maybe a film that incorporates that explanation could work, if there’s a great script. And as long as the women don’t play their own characters in flashbacks.

A prequel would have to be the way to go. How did they meet? Every 20 year old in hollwood would be dying to get in that movie. But then again, I can see producers trying to make a Sex 2.0 with younger chicks and then I’m over the idea.

I say let the ladies be. I was thrilled with the end of the series, but had to see the movie. It was enjoyable, but unnecessary, and I would’ve probably been better off without it.

I agree, a prequel makes sense or Carrie and John having a baby.

  • sari

    As Borat would say, “NOT!”

How could they make a prequel? The ladies are too old now. I saw the movie, but I liked the last episode better as an end to the show, so I’m pretending the movie doesn’t exist.

life doesn’t end at 40 in real life so why should it end on the silver screen? wouldn’t it be great to see strong women deal with issues that real women deal with? i know the SATC writers have it in them – the cancer arc with samantha proves it.

  • bethie

No please. I agree that the movie just mde me miss the show. What story is left? As much as I love the girls, let them ride out into the sunset in peace.

  • JJ

There was a whole sequel series made. It was called The Golden Girls.

I loved the show and i loved the movie. Sure, I was pissed at Big for part of the movie but I still loved it. It as about time that Hollywood made a freaking movie that women wanted to see. I love action movies and comedies. I love some rom-coms but the crap Hollywood has been giving us lately ain’t cutting it. It was nice to have this movie because I have a long relationship with these characters and couldn’t have cared if they sat in the coffee shop for 2 hours and talked about their lives i still would have loved it. I love the idea of a prequel or a sequel. I would like a prequel more however, that is a really great idea!!!

Maybe they should go the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset (or the Clerks/Clerks 2) route. Make a new movie every 10 years or so, when there’s something new to say. Of course that means in two movies they’d be the Golden Girls, like JJ just said.

I don’t think we need another sequel necessarily. I love the idea of a prequel, though. Each woman can sign-off on her younger self, and the prequel can be wrapped in the premise of the women gathering because there was a spot on Samantha’s latest mammogram. As they wait to hear if it’s cancerous, they play remember when and it’s how they all met and became friends. Ok, I think I thought too much about that.

  • CdrIvanova

Hear, hear, arryana. For me, life *started* at 40! As gruesome as it sounds, I think it would be interesting if another movie had one of the main characters (probably one of the hubbies) die and the drama would be about learning to cope with that *and* learning to get back into the dating pool as an older single woman.

  • vja

No, no … a thousand times NO.
Just show a Square Pegs episode and call it a prequel.

  • Jelana

My gut reaction is no — I’m not sure what kind of stories they could have left for this. BUT, when I first heard they were making the first movie, I was very anxious, and I enjoyed it. So, only if they can REALLY deliver a good movie that fits the characters and the show.

  • Jelana

Oh, and I would probably rather have a sequel than the 200 knock-off movies the studios probably have in the works. You know what they’ll look like — all the shoes and clothes, none of the heart.

  • djm

They could make a sequel every year and I wouldn’t mind. I don’t get what everyone is whining about – sure, the movie had some flaws, but so did the series and we all loved that. I say the next sequel should be that they are making a movie of Carrie’s book. While they are casting it would provide an opportunity to tell the story of how the girls met. I’m not a screenwriter so I have no idea if that would work, but so long as the 4 main girls are there I’m there. I will always be interested in what is happening in their lives and will take whatever I can get.

  • dom

yes i want a sequel. They can do it. MPK just needs to bring in some of the other shows writers maybe for a little humor punch up and definitely go for an all outright R rating. this time around it was pretty clear they shot it… not being sure if they wanted an R or PG-13. since they proved they can do it with an R i think they need to go all the way… the movie was not as good as the show, but i loved seeing them again. next time around it will just be better.

  • g

Yes Yes Yes to a sequel. It’s a good movie. Not great but the rust is off. They have it in them to make another. Throw in more sex and more funny though.

Sequel??? Please. Just from the little bit I’ve read and seen, I don’t at all understand what the attraction to this show ever was, much less the to-do over a movie. I seriously don’t give a hoot about Carrie and the gang. Much less their shoes.

  • Mary in Hernando

Definately! There are endless story lines, and these ladies will never get old.

  • Gibsgirl

Why yes indeed there should be a sequel! These ladies are FIERCE and the shoes are only the tip of the iceberg! For those of you that didn’t get the pleasure of getting to know them over the past few years….I suggest you join Netflix and spend a couple of weekends with the Ladies of “Sex in the City”!

  • ritu

I vote for sequel too.. have been a fan of this episodes and would like to see more

  • Helga

why? The Parker chick gets married to mr small or whatever..why even make a flick outta this drivel anyway?..there will be one regardless-but these Golden Girls are not getting my money-Hell no!!

  • Carrie

We need a sequel FOR SURE! Before going to the movie my gf’s and i were excited to the extent that none of us were able to sleep the night before viewing, as it was all we could think about! (Please don’t think we’re sad, we just love the girls/series) – i think once again we saw were shown a large variety of moments everyone could relate in someway to. It was happy, yet also showed realistic moments us “real life people” have to deal with (unlike some of these other wishy washy hollywood tales). We need more S&TC!!

  • Jane

LOVED the show Loved catching up with the girls for the movie- I missed them! But feel so intimately attached to the characters that I’d feel like a peeping Tom. I love Carries angst, but more could be boring and I never want her to bore. Sam was fab but could become a characature, same as Char. Miranda is marvelous and real and raw.
Leave it alone. P.S there should be an international register of Girls-nights-out for all of us that made an event and celebration of our BFFs. I’m sure the stat’s would be staggering! Cheers

  • Julie

I am a religious watcher of the show and loved the movie but no sequel. As these women get older I can no longer bare to see them mess up their love lives like they have so many times. It also leaves us room to wonder.
