Does MTV hate your DVR?

Jacksoncrew_lI don’t want to start any rumors or anything, but that’s the feeling I’m getting from the press release the network sent out this morning. You tell me: How else to interpret their promise that MTV’s summer/fall lineup will, among other things (to quote the release), "Tap…into the ‘Culture of Live’ with DVR-proof shows that must be seen in premiere or the viewer misses out such as Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew"?

Mind you, I don’t quite understand what it means to make a show "DVR proof." Is this some sort of new scrambling technology? (Google’s no help, if so.) It’s been suggested to me that this phrase might have been meant figuratively, as in, "Randy Jackson’s dance-competition show is soblindingly awesome that it will obviate the very need to possess a DVR, because you will be unable to resist watching it as soon as it airs." (I reached out to a couple of people at MTV this morning for clarification and still haven’t heard back, for what it’s worth.) Anyway, that’s all beside the point. I’m not ashamed to admit that I enjoyed Dance Crew quite a bit last season, and I’m looking forward to its return. But by no stretch of the imagination was it appointment viewing — more like, "eh, it’s 2 a.m. and nothing else is on" viewing. Does MTV really think people are going to ditch their plans to hang out in the sun this summer in order to be part of the "Culture of Live," watching Randy Jackson judge an amateur dance-off?! They should be happy for every DVR viewer they get! Shouldn’t they?

Actually, there are some existing and proposed technical measures to prevent people from DVRing certain shows.

MTV is the network with the most advertising on tv, so of course they hate DVRs! MTV is famous for starting shows between 5-7 minutes after they’re supposed to start (and ending them wayyyy late) to ensure you have to either watch it more than once, or watch it live.
The more this goes on, the more I’m tempted to say “f*ck Viacom” altogether and just stop supporting everything that megalomaniac media company does. Remember, this is the same company that brought us the atrocious “Flavor of Love”…

MTV is already against DVR’s. For some reason none of their shows record exactly on the hour and they end with like 2 minutes missing. So either I miss the end of the show or miss the previews for next week. It’s been doing that since Making The Band 4. Did it for the RW-RR Challenge last season. And now it never records The Real World 20 properly. I always have to manually set it to record longer, or record the show following.

Now that I know someone at EW loves America’s Best Dance Crew as much as I do, could you PLEASE do a TV Watch on it this season?!

  • Todd

Wow, MTV is throwing down. Watch it or miss it, eh? That’s a lot of pressure, considering MTV never reruns their shows, especially not in marathon formats each and every week. How will we ever be able to keep up with our favorite MTV original programming?

  • Charles

Yes, there are ways to set the “Flags” so that DVR’s will not record, or at the very least be tricked into not recording a program if you have it set to only record “new” episodes. Fortunately there is nothing on MTV that I am the slightest bit interested in watching. But if this was to spread to “real” shows on “real” networks I’m sure that I and most people would totally wig out. Rightfully so…

So basically MTV is forcing people to watch their garbagy shows on their (MTV’s) time.
Hey, MTV, you want people to care about you? PLAY MUSIC VIDEOS!!! AND NOT TWO SECONDS OR ONE MINUTE; THE WHOLE THING!!!

  • mrclean

my DVR hates MTV right back. and so do I.

  • rich russo

    MTV is crap-
Does anyone know why they are still called Music Television?- If they want to impose DRM on there programming- who cares- It’s not worth watching much less DVRing. Viacom is also destroying VH1 and TV Land with this materialistic reality junk!

  • Alyson

    who watches mtv without dvr?

  • Matchkitjohn

One way to do it is to not to title the episode.

  • Pepper

Bottom line? I absolutely, positively will NOT watch any show that I can’t DVR. If a show can’t be DVR’d, it won’t be watched in our household. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

  • cimagato

MTV is already anti-DVR. Just try to record a program according to the guide. You can’t. You get the last 20 minutes of the preceding show, and the first 10 of what you want to watch. Then there are the times when the guide says it’s on, but that’s not what gets recorded. I don’t even bother anymore.

  • MTV

Hey everyone… I’m Ariana from the MTV Communications team. What an enthusiastic response!
To clarify, MTV is not throwing down the gauntlet against your DVR (Note to evil MTV Scientists: abort plans to take over America’s DVRs, per our meeting). Seriously, we believe you should be able to watch MTV where you want, when you want just like always. The headline was meant to imply that we think the next season of “Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew” is going to be well worth watching, so you won’t WANT to use your DVR because you’ll want to see the competition happen live.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. We’re listening!
