Shearwater (pictured), an indie rock band from Austin, Texas, has a somewhat kooky aesthetic — frontman Jonathan Meiburg writes intelligent, cryptic songs about nature, has a Masters in geology, and obsesses over birds like most rock stars obsess over women. Yet his music is hardly dull — it boasts a quiet ferocity belied by gorgeous, soaring melodies. Rook, Shearwater’s new album, is out next Tuesday on Matador, but check out some of their songs now, or this totally awesome video set to their song "Turn Your Transmitters Off." It seems to have nothing to do with the music in question, but who doesn’t like legs?

– The Thief of Baghdad Criterion Collection DVD – I’ve loved this movie since I was about four. Definitely the best classic DVD release of the year so far.
– “Step Brothers” red-band trailer – the bits with the bunk bed and the job interview are hysterical. Here’s hoping this R-rated Will Ferrell comedy will be better than his last one (“Semi-Pro”).
– Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” – The Summer movie season hasn’t been off to the most spectacular start review-wise. So switch over to comics’ current blockbuster summer event. Unlike “Civil War” and “World War Hulk”, every issue and tie-in has been supremely satisfying.
TV- The season finale of Lost. I know it hasn’t aired yet but I expect BIG things from it.
Music- David Cook has placed 17 songs on I tunes so I think that desrves a mention.
Movies- I still think Iron Man is the best out there right now.
They Might Be Giants, Here Come the 1 2 3’s. These guys are the only entries in the current crop of kids’ music that can hold a candle to MY educational tunes of School House Rock. I crack up listening to it even more than my kids.
i know laura marling’s cd “alas i cannot swim” supposedly came out in march, but it was recently put up on itunes. yay! i’ve been playing it non-stop for the past week. laura is one of the best singer/songwriters i’ve heard in a very long time.. especially someone so young. everyone MUST check her out!
1. Iron chef America- I never thought I would get into a food competition show but dar nit if I’m not hooked.
2. Off with her head- After two seasons we Tudors watchers finally get what we came for, Anne Boelyn’s beheading.
3. The Dark Knight trailer- That Joker dude gives me the creeps.
let’s love my homeland with the barenaked ladies’ latest disc – for kids! – “Snacktime”. can’t wait to give this to my nephew.
ditto to B – Iron Man was a truly great film, and i’m having a hard time not nagging my husband that we should shell out $26 to see it again. (see my review! http://mediablowout.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-own-private-war.html)
i mean, without the extra bracket in the address. :p http://mediablowout.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-own-private-war.html
I agree, elly…The Barenaked Ladies “SnackTime” is a GREAT kids’ cd. And pretty entertaining for those of who haven’t been a kid for quite some time.
CD- Phantom Planet’s “Raise the Dead”. It was released about a month ago, and there’s a half dozen garage rock tunes on this album that I feel are instant classics. This album (EW gave it a B+) is INSANELY good and it’d be a crime not to add it to the Must List.
Check out the “Evil Dead” inspired video for their hit single “Do the Panic” Below:
the book of bert – you cant beat a book about celebrity mustaches.
–top chef– there’s something about watching skilled professionals performing feats of culinary excellence (most of the time) that makes me feel even worse about my own cooking skills, yet inspires me to rummage through my own kitchen in attempts to whip up something worthy of a quickfire win!
–’Charlie bit me!’– ok ok, it’s probably no the most current or hillarious youtube video, but how can you NOT laugh at these two young brothers? (and they’re british, which automatically makes them like 10 times cuter) the funniest part is that after being bit once, the older one (name please?) goes back for another bite by offering his digit to little charlie AGAIN!
–Mariah Carey ‘Idol’ covers– arguably, some of the best performances this season! david and david belted out amazing renditions of ‘when you believe’ and ‘always be my baby’. (amazing enough that i bought them BOTH from itunes) and yes, even though it got her booted, kristy’s ‘forever’ is on my playlist as well!
thecheappop.com – ben linus one day, rick moranis the other. Need I say more>?
1. The Alaska experiment-with what these people have to do just to survive reminds you how much Survivor is just a trumped up game show.
2. Redbelt-Mamet fighting movie, the anti-sex in the city movie.
3. Anything but Bleeding Love….seriously, what’s next? Crapping love? Sweating love? Bleeding love…eeeeewwwww.
1. Handlebars by Flobots. Original sound and so catchy. The first time I heard it I thought it was the dumbest song ever. Now I can’t stop singing it.
2. Top Chef. Final four, baby!!!
3. So You Think You Can Dance. I’ll be so happy when they get past the auditions and onto the top 20 dancers.
Michael Ausiello coming to Entertainment Weekly. What a coup for you and for us!
And I’m kind of loving Step it Up and Dance.
Yay!!!
Katy Perry’s song “I Kissed a Girl.” Just a great funky and fun anthem.
I know this is coming in late, but I have to second ecjb’s vote for Katy Perry’s song “I Kissed a Girl.” It’s just fun, catchy indie pop and I can’t get enough of it.
“Chasing Harry Winston” by Lauren Weisberger (The Devil Wears Prada)
Picked it up Tuesday and haven’t really been able to put it down since.
SNUFF – Chuck Palahniuk , Brilliant and Twisted as per usual.
LOST – Truly the BEST show on TV
BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA – The final CYLON!! Who is it??? The other best show on tv.
